Here’s a thought. A year ago, how would you have compared the Habs and the Oilers? The Oilers a tire fire, the Habs on the rise?
Cue a change in management in Edmonton. Holland is not the greatest GM but he is a solid, experienced guy, facing some bad contracts and a poorly structured team makeup. A year later and look at the two teams. This is exactly what good management can do following bad management. Unfortunately Bergevin could never snag a McDavid or Draisaitl and fought tooth and nail any opportunity to do so.
It’s taken 1 year to completely change Edmonton’s outlook. Not 5. One.

The return for Athanasiou seems kind of light in my estimation. A really big and fast 25 year old forward who scored 30 goals last season only fetches two seconds and the Wings have to take Gagner. The Oilers will control the player for two more seasons, so this is not a rental.
Maybe Yzerman does not think that highly of the big Greek or maybe Yzerman wanted to help out Kenny Holland so long as the return was not absurdly low.

Watching playoffs this year can see why teams willing to give up a 2nd for a Scandella. Depth on D is valuable in playoffs. Physically size gives goalies more protection, needed playing some clubs.
