I'm sure he has that, as well as the 50-70 names they've researched thoroughly, through the various levels of the draft. I wouldn't expect Bergevin to know the names except for the top prospects, maybe 50 names. I wouldn't expect him to be familiar with most of those, but at least recognize the name as a top prospect. When you draft 15th, I would expect him to know the names of all the players who may be available around that spot, and why one or three would be preferable to the others. He should have known Caufield's name and Krebs' name. I did and I'm not paid several millions a year and I don't spend a ton of time at it either. Those are not high standards, but he was content to leave it all up to Timmins. I don't agree with interfering, (as I understand he did with Dalton Thrower), but if you're supervising someone you should have some idea of what they do, so you can check on the important parts of their job. Anyone responsible for the work of others knows this because it can affect you directly. Berg didn't seem to care all that much, but he certainly looked excited when discussing trading possibilities.

A rare Jack Smith goal. Last night’s Sioux Falls vs Tri-City game featured two prospects, Smith and Pitlick. I watched bits and pieces during the breaks of the Chicago Steel game. Will go back and watch it so see more of the two prospects. I have seen a few games of Smith now, and he rarely does much in terms of driving or creating offence. This is a far cry from the three points per game pace he was on during his injury shortened pre-draft high school season. Some guys just don’t adjust to higher level competition, and some take much longer. I know TT talked about his skating. It seems okay to me, but not as high end as they pitched it. I also noticed that he seems to be out of gas at the end of a few shifts and can’t keep up. That screams conditioning issue to me. He will forever be compared to his two other fellow Americans that were picked in the fourth round after him: Biondi and Farrell. Right now, he is a massively distant third place.
He centres the third line and even gets some second unit PP time. The Herd load up their top PP with all their offensive guys like Sillinger, Toporowski, and Pinoniemi for a mix of their top two lines (they go with four forwards). Anyway, here is his goal.

Speaking of Pitlick, here is his goal from Thursday night. He showed some quickness and decent hands on this turnover goal. He is still trending at a bit below a point per game, which is quite low for a third year guy in the league. He does show some flashes and he definitely can skate out there. He added an assist last night against Sioux Falls. He and Tri-City play Smith’s Sioux Falls again tonight, for the last in a three in three for Tri-City. He is committed to Minnesota next season. They are a strong program, and just beat Caufield’s Wisconsin in the Big10 tournament.

To wrap up my ramblings on the USHL performances from last night (Dobes did lose his game 3-2 though), there is this kid named Farrell. The Steel blew open a 3-3 game in the third with four unanswered to win 7-3. I caught a good chunk of this game, and it was fun from a Chicago perspective. Farrell ended up with four assists in the game. He now has 54 in the season, shattering the old Steel single season record of 51. He leads the league in assists and points. His team mate Coronato had a superb game, with the hat trick and two helpers. He and Farrell have some wicked chemistry on the PP (and on the PK as you will see from the highlight below). They play on different lines five on five. The fun thing about Farrell’s big numbers is they still have over a month of regular season left.
Here is a really great assist from last night. The Steel are on the PK and Farrell drives the puck up along the wall. He curls back, gives a little head check to see where Coronato is, and feeds a beauty back hand pass through the entire team finding a near impossible seam. Coronato makes no mistake. GWG.

Farrell’s vision on his assist tonight was great. Sees the seam, KaBoom. Steel won in OT 3-2.

Just in case you were wondering how ex-prospect Cole Fonstad is doing as the Tips make their debut tonight. He and Fairbrother share the “C” and are back in action again.
Everett won the game 2-0 and Gianni picked up an assist.

Later today, the NCAA will announce the 16 teams that will compete in their four regionals for the chance to advance to the Frozen Four. The Habs will have a number of players represented as these teams will make it:
Wisconsin - Caufield and Gorniak Minnesota-Duluth - Biondi Boston University - Tuch
An obscure prospect in Swedish defender Henrikson will also play for Lake Superior State, but he is never going to be signed.
TSN will cover all the games, with most of the games being streamed on their platform. A few games will be on the various TSN channels. I will post the relevant games schedule when it is announced tonight.

Here is Fairbrother’s assist in last night’s 2-0 win.
He picked up two more in today’s 7-0 win. Everett did not give up a goal in their opening weekend.

So Jordan Harris will remain at Northeastern for his senior year. At the end, he will have the option of going FA. I wonder if we stand to lose him?

By him not signing this off-season, the chance of him opting to go the free agent route after next summer is definitely a larger consideration. This is definitely a set back as he could really have stepped in and played in Laval after his quarantine. It would be a real shame to lose him for nothing if that was how it turns out. He may just be really committed to finishing his degree and also shooting for a better year as his team disappointed and did not make the NCAA tournament this year after a string of strong seasons. We shall see.

For sure, this increases the likelihood that Harris could just pick his destination.
Is that what is behind this? Not necessarily. I am too lazy to look it up right now, but Montreal said something to the effect of Harris is returning to school but remains committed to signing with the Canadien at the conclusion of his senior year. That could be damage control public relations. But it could be accurate. The kid's decision could be driven by the desire to see his team have a better season and given how they played games with no fans and took classes online, maybe he is craving a fun normal year at college.
Regarding Jack Smith, thanks for the update NW, I did not like this pick on draft day and I would be quite surprised if this kid turns into a legit NHL prospect. You are right, he will naturally be judged against Biondi and Farrell. And I have a hunch that if a kid like Villeneuve or Dufour makes a career in the NHL and Smith does not, plenty of people will say WTF why didn't Timmins take a chance (after all, this is fourth round) on a local boy rather than gorging on American high schoolers (of the three US kids in the fourth round, Smith was the reach in my opinion).

The MHL playoffs in Russia are into the quarter finals with SKA1946 in very tough with Loko, the top team in the MHL. SKA are missing a few key guys to injury, and Gordin just recently returned from a minor injury as is playing on the fourth line and getting some PP time as evidenced in the video. Prior to the playoffs, SKA, like other MHL teams, did bolster their lineup with guys from the VHL team as they were out of those playoffs. So they now have top goalie Askarov in net and highly touted Chibrikov on their top line.
Loko just shut out SKA earlier today 1-0 in OT to go up 2-0 in the series. Loko also won 5-2 yesterday, and here was Gordin’s very nice shot that tied things up at 1-1. He played quite well in the bits of the game that I was able to catch.

folatre, you will like this regarding Jack Smith. I watched Saturday’s Omaha-Sioux Falls game as it featured Smith vs Dobes head to head. After talking trash about Smith in my earlier recent post, he quite clearly wanted to show me up by scoring his second goal in three games lol. The game was out of hand 6-1 and Omaha took the foot of the gas in the third and let in two quick goals. They hung on to win 7-3 in the end.
Smith now has 5 goals and 11 points in 37 games. Interesting and fun fact is that two of those goals have been scored against Habs prospect Jakub Dobes.

Since then, he has played in seven (yup 7) different leagues in two continents. This is his second year in the NCAA and he managed his first point of the season on the weekend when LSSU won their conference championship. I might watch bits of his game on Friday just for kicks as I have never actually seen him play before as he has never been considered a guy that the Habs would ever sign. At 23 years of age and counting, nothing has changed. After all these years, I am actually shocked that the Habs still officially hold his rights.

Everett played its third game last night, and two trends continued.
One, they did not give up a goal in their 3-0 win. Great 7th round pick in Dustin Wolf, Calgary.
Two, Fairbrother recorded another assist, to bring his totals to 4 in three games. He and his fellow defenders must also be doing good things to not have conceded a goal yet.

Caufield starts now.
In MHL playoffs, Gordin and SKA face elimination as they are down 2-0 in their best of five quarter finals. Gordin must be back to full health, as he is on the top line today. He scored the first goal and assisted on the second. SKA are up 3-0 midway through the second.

Breaking NCAA news. Michigan becomes the second team to withdraw from the tournament due to COVID. They were to play UMD (Biondi) today. Now, UMD will move to the regional final game tomorrow instead. Too bad, as it would have been fun seeing the Wolverines big three prospects against Biondi and company.
Bemidji State Beavers up 2-0 after one against Wisconsin. The Beavers are a big heavy team and giving the Badgers some trouble. The also scored the second goal with 15 seconds left in the first. Those are killers.
