Toffoli and Anderson clearly closed the door on Kovalchuk returning to the Habs. And around the league right now there just so little cap space and cash flow, the best deal he probably got offered was one year at the league min. When you factor in taxes, plus the 10 percent deferral, plus the 20 percent escrow, Kovalchuk is going to make out much better in Russia.

Arizona gets under the cap by dealing Stepan to Ottawa. The centre only has $2 million in real money remaining on his contract so Melnyk is doing what he is comfortable doing. I am a little surprised that Dorion gave the Coyotes a second round pick for a rental when one would assume Ottawa is not really convinced they will be in the hunt for the playoffs.
The Canadian division is deep and with this move the Sens probably got a little better.

They can dump him at the deadline for some pick back, as his prorated remaining salary will make him easy to move for a playoff bound team.

I's the usual MO with MElnyk. $$ make the decisions. I suspect they could have taken Tyler Johnson's contract plus a draft choice off of Tampa if they really wanted to improve the line-up rather than just pretend. Stepan is better than the 'guy' penciled in on whichever line at centre, but there are more than a few opinions saying he has regressed badly. His redeeming value to Melnyk is that he is
a) a body who can play centre b) cheap, but raises the team's cap. c) an expiring contract.
Franko, I feel for you and every other Ottawa follower. Melnyk makes Molson look like a drunken sailor.

MT?

MT? Im not sure what they are doing... I am not sure how the Sens are staying afloat financially... the only reason might be to get some veteran leadership to help out the young guys... other than that I have no idea why they grabbed him.

If I liked the Sens, I would be happy with this because having kids playing season after season in an absolute dumpster fire is not good for developing them. Stepan, Tierney and Norris down the middle is not going to scare anyone but it offers a little more stability.

Hoffman does indeed seem to be heading to St. Louis, though at this moment it is merely being referred to as a PTO. I am sure this relates to the timing of when Steen and Tarasenko go onto LTIR. I imagine it will be 1 year/$5 million.

Yeah, sounds like it.
I don't think the Blues can win the Cup again. They rode hot goaltending by Binnington, but I think he's following the Matt Murray route and isn't the guy he showed in those playoffs. Losing Pietrangelo, even with the addition of Krug, is a blow. Frankly, late in the last season, Krug didn't look that good to me. I thought he might be injured. Guess we'll see.

Toews Out Indefinitely - Mystery Illness? Chronic Fatigue? Perhaps he had COVID and was unaware...side effects? I've heard anecdotally that some people are quite a while getting energy levels back to normal.

I've heard anecdotally that some people are quite a while getting energy levels back to normal. There are people that are referred to as " long haulers" that experience debilitating effects long after they get a negative test result.

The beat down on this year's class of UFAs goes on...and on. Hoffman got 1 year/$4 million. This is a guy who has lit the lamp at a .349 goals per game clip for his career.
The 2021 UFA class should be getting nervous. Not only will the cap still be flat and league's finances continue to be in shambles. The 2021 guys get the bad luck that almost the entirety of the 2020 UFA class goes right back on the market. Ouch.

An annoying side-note is that he'll likely retain, post-bankruptcy, more assets than most of us ever have in our lifetimes.

Kane is, or was touted as a leader and an example for society.

He's struggled with gambling in the past. Assuming this was all self inflicted, my guess would be that he the money was lost at the casino.

Huh, did he say that? Does Kane thinks he is in the NBA or NFL where he can renegotiate mid-stream? Not to mention, why would he be so sure that given the current finances (cash flow problems and cap headaches) of the league that he would actually be in line for a larger contract?

Jeje, I am going to refrain from laughing at the Leafs because my recollection is that the Habs lost four times last season to the Red Wings who were truly an epically historically awful team.
My son and I mostly watched the Caps-Sabres game tonight. Refs gave Buffalo a boatload of power plays and the Sabres nevertheless seem to be the same old Sabres.
Tampa is Tampa obviously. But, man, Chicago could just go an epic tank campaign this season. The Blackhawks really stink.

Leafs lose!!!! Anderson allows 5 goals The Sens have their shortcomings...but they have several finishers. 6th place finish? Nothing like an underdog mentality in a shortened season. Toronto's D-zone play has been erratic thus far..and Andersen's been in his Game 7 mode.
