Big, big news to digest. Toronto has signed Wayne Simmonds (2 years/$1.8 million). Hold on, this is fourth liner news.
Actually, the big news of the day is regarding Ryan Nugent-Hopkins: 8 years/$41 million.
This contract is, for various reasons, going to draw a lot of attention around the league. And I think it also holds implications for Danault.

Hey it's Toronto so the Simmonds signing merits fanfare. I'm surprised RNH got 8 years, that will bring him up to 36. As a 1st overall he's a disappointment but he has become a steady 20 goal type of guy and he can play wing. The Oilers need those guys. He's got a much more proven ability to score than Danault has ever shown. The guy who was taken just after him, Landeskog, is also UFA. I'm really interested to see if he stays with the Avs.

Arvidsson to the Kings for a 2021 second and a 2022 third rounder.
Granted I do not follow the Predators closely, but on the surface of it this seems like a peculiar move for Nashville to make. Arvidsson is only 28, he is a good goal scorer (career .33 goals per game), and a club-friendly deal (three more seasons at $4.25 AAV).
Is Poile trying to weaken his team, which is no better than a bubble type group anyway, thus stealthily transitioning into tank mode in order to try to get a franchise player in the 2022 draft?
I am not saying the picks are worthless but Nashville is subtracting a good piece for nothing that will help them now or in the near-term future.

I don't know those moves much. A lot of rumours out there. I see some opportunity though.
Habs are dangerous if they get in playoffs. But that is not a certain. Regualr season is more north/south, skill game. Where playoffs are more about team structure, grit, hard work and character. However, we need to get in playoffs in order for Bergs recipe to work.
Like to add a good offensive piece this summer. Dip into farm and extra picks we have. Like more skill. Even if a vet. Gives 2 maybe 3 shots at a cup. Before rebuild as we likely lose several young pieces to add star player. But can get it back on other end, adding several deep playoff runs, what we have left in a few years usually bring more back in trade.

RFA Eriksson Ek locked up long-term by Minnesota -- 8 years/$42 million. Billy Guerin is buying five UFA years so it was going to cost him. But in reality it seems like a relatively safe bet by Minnesota since they are locking in all the prime years of the kid's career.
Eriksson Ek is an example of why teams have to be patient with young centremen (particularly Europeans). He was basically considered a first-round bust until 2019-20 and he really did not fully emerge until 2021 at age 24. I would say he is a 60 point two-way centre. I would not want that AAV on my roster if I was primarily buying the back nine of the guy's career, but since Minnesota is getting the prime ceiling years it will probably be solid business.
Now comes the hard part for Guerin. How does he get Kaprizov to sign a long-term deal?

Kaprizov is already 24 so older than the typical Calder winner. He probably wants to play catch up now so as you say, Guerin has his work cut out for him.
Not sure if you saw the Calder voting. Kaprizov was just one first place vote away from being a unanimous winner.

Duclair stays with Florida (3 x 3). From the moment that he landed in Ottawa, Duclair really got his career back on track (130 games, 41 goals, 45 assists).
That is a good deal for Florida considering they are getting the player in his age 27-29 seasons.

Boston gets a key 24 year old locked up long-term by buying four UFA years.
Basically, Carlo got a contract that an elite shutdown d-man gets. That makes sense because that is what he is. He did not get point producer money because he does not put up points.

Heiskanen showed during his ELC that he is elite. And indeed he got paid: 8 years/$67.6 million ($8.45 AAV).
At first glance, the sticker shock is there. But really that seems like pretty good business for Dallas. You lock up the entirety of the prime years of the career of your #1 d-man.
The problem with doing a two or three year deal when you have a budding superstar coming off his ELC is that it creates uncertainty in the sense that the player may not feel fully respected and the org is just creating the likely scenario where the eventual AAV for buying UFA years will be even higher.

That Heiskanen deal will set the market for some of the other top tier young defenders like Makar who will be getting huge raises soon off their ELCs. In the end, if you have a top pairing young defender, you lock them up.

The downside is that you'll have a star in his prime looking for a long term extension just when he's at his best (ie, year 7, about 29-30 years old) rather than a declining 33-34 year old. If 8 year deals off ELCs become the norm, it's a definite inticement to not graduate kids too soon, since you might well lose them at 30 as UFAs. I'd rather a season at 30 than one at 19.

Good point, PTH. For elite d-men, there are usually 5-6 good years in their 30s. Though with most forwards, I would not want to be offering a long-term deal to a 29-30 year old.
Wow, the trades are coming in fast and furious (I believe the deadline was 3 pm). Ellis to the Flyers for Myers and Patrick (I like it for Nashville). Patrick is getting flipped to Vegas for Glass. It is kind of shocking the way Glass' development stalled. I imagine Vegas is just hoping Patrick can be a productive 3C.
Plan the parade on Yonge Street, the Leafs acquired Jared McCann.

A serious perennial Norris Trophy candidate. Seems like a good deal for Dallas to me. Remember, though, no state tax so that's like a $10MM salary in Canada or some of the States. There's that CAP advantage again.

I really liked McCann when he was in Vancouver. He produced 32 points in 43 games last year....playing behind Crosby and Malkin, though Malkin was injured at times. That's almost .75 points per game. That's a 60 point pace in a normal season. Obviously he plays as the 3rd centre, but he's a strong 3rd centre. I like the acquisition. Hallander had ok results in the SEL as a 21 year old so it might be a good deal all around.

Patrick is a question mark too as he has been dealing with a migraine issue. int-www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/flyers-nolan-patrick-ready-return-debilitating-migraines/Just had another look at that 2017 draft. The best players went at 3, 4 and 5 - Heiskanen, Makar and Petterson. Doesnt always pay to win the lottery.

Ladd was 30 years old that summer when he signed the seven year deal. Well it is yet another reminder that the cost of making terrible contracts go away is pricey.

Majority of those big contracts go bad. Remember couple of years ago everybody on here wanted Karlsson or Duchene signed. How many would touch those contracts now? It is a significant gamble.

If Gallagher was not on team I would offer Drouin for Subban. In hopes he doesn't act up in final year of contract. This has been one crazy off season and it has only begun. Bergs is generally a big mover and shaker during off season. With all the new found caproom I suspect he will make several big trades. If he doesn't?? Remember the draft is in Montreal next year. It is a stacked draft. DO you see what I see?

They were saying on 690 yesterday, Habs have called about Beauvillier. I liked him as a junior. I remember he was a 1.5ppg player his draft year. Isles play a tight defensive system. Chance there for more offense. He is a RFA. We could Josh Anderson him. Get him at a cut rate and lock Beauvillier up long term

Looks like they're signing Oleksiak as well. Does this mean they're going the big-and-mean approach we just took? And does that mean Price is gone? Or is it simply a case of those two guys being the best players available from their respective teams? It's not like Edmonton and Dallas were offering up much else. Oh the intrigue.
