I’d buy tickets to that first Rags/Caps game next year.

And now apparently the league will be looking into allegations that Evander Kane bet on games his own team (San Jose) played in. I bet the bunker boys (Molson, Bergevin, Timmins) are hoping this story has real legs because the media will certainly be feasting on this if the allegations warrant an actual investigation. I doubt he did, nothing harsher than scorn of a woman. But he is a wing nut.....if he did......

The man has cleared over $20 million after taxes in his career and yet he filed for bankruptcy. Plus, it is a known fact that he lost $500K in a Las Vegas casino one weekend. So it is not beyond the reach to suspect sometimes desperate people do foolish things.

The NHL should have investigated when it came to light that he was being sued for the 500k from the casino. Having that type of problem opens you up to all kinds of bad influence

We're talking about the NHL here. Bettman probably had Campbell do an 'in depth' investigation. Campbell delegated it to Parros, who looked at video of Kane at the roulette wheel and concluded there was no direct hit to anyone's head. All's good.

That's funny... was there a video describing why there was no direct hit?

If you put up offensive many teams willing to take a chance on him generally. But he is a head case. I think we are set for wingers.

There is a ton of stupid money and term being thrown at defenders this off-season. By comparison, Petry’s deal looks pretty good right now.

I assume you're talking about the Nurse extension. 8 years, 74 mill.
I like this guy but never considered him for that pay grade.

Nurse is a great d-man, of this there is no doubt. Basically I think that Kenny Holland got swept up in the domino effect. If Jones and Werenski are getting $9.5 per, then our #1 in his prime needs to get it here or he will go elsewhere.
Based on what the balance of his work until now, I would say Nurse is set to be a little overpaid. But obviously Edmonton thinks a stud who will consolidate into a clear elite #1 d-man is worth the cap investment when the max-term contract will conclude when the guy is 35 years old (younger than today's Weber).

I think Holland panicked a little by things out of his control (Klefbom's injury, the big money being handed out) and the consequences of his own actions - losing Larsson and trading Bear.
I think Edmonton's main issue is the last line of defense - goaltending. Giving a multi year deal to a 39 year old is not the solution

Found this article in an Edmonton paper written before the signing. The writer acknowledges that Nurse is due for a big payday. What he argues for is less term. There is a table in there that shows Karlsson and Doughty at the top still making over 11 million a season with 6 seasons to go. Yikes! These guys just aren't worth it any more. The Oilers wil be in a similar situation as tbe Leafs are in now when the Nurse contract kicks in with 30 million committed to 3 players. Thought it was an interesting read. edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey/edmonton-oilers-need-to-be-careful-to-avoid-a-karlsson-doughty-situation-with-darnell-nurse-nhl-insider-warnsEDIT: By reading this article I discovered that I am really out of the loop & didn't know that Hamilton had signed with the Devils about 10 days ago or that Weenski had just signed a 6 year extension averaging 9 million.

I read something, somewhere, about a stat involving Nurse. His Corsi was like 57% when playing with McDavid and 43% (or thereabouts, my memory is waning) when McDavid wasn't on the ice. That's a significant variation. Whatever....the timing of some other contracts for youngish (25-26 years old) top line Dmen paved the way for Nurse to get the kind of raise he did. I think he's worth about $7MM a year, but the market is saying something else.

is it not equally sad when teams sign these players? want him for leadership? sign him as an assistant coach. but you're telling me that some rookie can't play as poorly well?

Thornton was a great player and his love for the game is undeniable. But, yeah, I have to agree here. Thornton is painfully slow out there and, aside from the power play (and looking at the Panthers lineup I am not sure they really need him), he just does not offer enough to justify seeing the ice.
And I do not know about the whole leadership angle. I may be wrong, but Thornton never struck me as a tone-setter type dude who would get guys following his example. He is popular with his mates but that is not necessarily the same thing as being a big time leader.

What do old Canadians around retirement age do when winter hits? They go to Florida. Just like Joe Thornton has … Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun
