Khisamutdinov is cut from Laval and heads to 3R. Not exactly where a foreign player on his last year of his ELC hopes to be playing. I expect he will return to Russia next year to pursue his career at home and to make more money. Bouchard did not use him a ton last year, and mainly on the 4th line in more limited minutes (similar to his use of Hillis). I don’t mind if the Habs take flyers like this with late round picks. They don’t always work out of course.

Looks like Poulin will be the starting goalie for 3R. The Rocket cut him once Primeau was returned to the Rocket.
I know he did not look good in camp, but this is a 31 year old that had a pretty decent season last year in the Allsvenskan, played four games and won bronze for Canada at the Olympics three years ago (I had totally forgotten he played on that team - it was the non-NHL players that games) and won his three games to lead Canada to the Spengler Cup in 2017-18 while he was playing in Europe.
Decent veteran for the new ECHL team and good call up for Laval if Primeau is called up for any reason. With Montembeault around, that is less likely, but at some point he will have to be put on waivers again when Price returns.

Sounds like as a back-up, Poulin would be a better choice than Montembeault.

Sounds like as a back-up, Poulin would be a better choice than Montembeault. He is just on an AHL deal right now. They would have to sign him to an NHL deal for that to happen. Is he worth the 49th NHL deal right now? I would expect not.

Poehling sent to Laval. I wonder why they bothered keeping him for the opening roster that they filed with the NHL. Hopefully he can get lots of ice time and play well in Laval to kick off the season. He played well last year, but that did not seem to translate to camp this year.

The Rocket open their new season tonight at home against Belleville, and then follow up with a rematch in Belleville tomorrow night.
Tonight’s home game is on RDS (or RDS2? Not sure as I don’t get either) and both games can be watched for free on AHL TV streaming service. You just need to register an account. You don’t need a current paid subscription for this weekend.

Here is Poehling’s nice goal from last night’s big 6-2 Rocket season opening win. Keep doing this, Ryan. Note he is also wearing an “A” for the team.

The Place Bell was rocking in Laval last night. Good to see a huge crowd again. Now if only the Habs could play that well.

Great environment there at the Rocket game. Belleville may not have as many high-salary vets as Laval, but they have a bunch of recent 1st and 2nd round picks playing so it is a nice win for the Rocket.
I hope that Poehling stays hot and determined because I think guys like Evans and Paquette are about 5-7 games away from a demotion (jeje, no, not to the AHL, but in the case Evans the demotion will be to the fourth line and for Paquette it will be to the press box).

Belleville won the second of the home and away series with Laval last night, 5-2. Dauphin with both Laval goals.
The Rocket lost more than the game, as Poehling had to leave the game after getting whacked in the back of the head. Does not look particularly intentional though. More of wrong place, wrong time.

With Belzile on waivers, this move make sense if they want Hillis to get more ice time. He will definitely play a more important role in 3R rather than a rotating depth role in Laval right now.

Rocket beat the Moose tonight 5-4. Manitoba scored their last goal with 2.5 seconds left while on a PP. Goals by Dauphin, Roy, Belzile, Dea, and Bisson. Primeau with the win.
Three of the goals (Roy, Belzile, Dea).

That was very cool. Reggie Houle there too. The boys lost 6-3 against a stacked Growlers team (the Leafs have loaded it with guys on AHL deals). Our two prospects there, Hillis and Khisamutdinov both had an assist in their first ECHL game. From some reports, Khisamutdinov had a strong game.

Lions lost 3-1 to NL Growlers, but this was a beauty from Arsen. Guess he likes the new opportunity and ice time.

Rocket play the Marlies tonight. Poehling back at practice, but in a non contact jersey. Progress at least.
The Rocket are coming off a 3-0 loss against the baby Isles on Sunday afternoon (Primeau in net and gave up a pair) and a 4-0 win over the baby Bruins on Saturday night (McNiven in net). Those quick turnaround B2B games are tough.

Watching that Khisamutdinov goal, had two thoughts. He is a big guy and uses that size and strength well. Second, he wasn't moving that quickly on the goal, but completely bulled his way through after getting the defender (?) off balance with the move. From a pure analysis standpoint, the good thing is that what he was doing in juniour against mostly smaller guys, works at the AHL level, with the caveat that the guy he went around didn't look like he was very big. But then, if you like the match-up, you use what works. The speed is a bit worrisome. NHL defensemen will, in most cases be bigger and faster than the guy he beat. Even if they are Quinn HUghes, and small, they can adjust faster and not let him get the angle on them, maybe make him go a bit wider than he'd like.
If he can get an extra step, he'll be a pretty formidable player. Nice hands and you can't develop that size. You either have it or you don't.

Laval smoke the Marlies 5-0 behind a Primeau shutout. Dauphin with two more goals, Dea with one, Pezzetta with one, Ylönen and Fairbrother with a pair of helpers. Oh yeah, the Marlies tried to goon it up only to have guys like Baddock and Pezzetta win those battles too. Suck it TO.

The Rocket dropped a pair against Rochester this weekend. On Friday night, they likely deserved a better fate as they outshot and outplayed the Amerks. Final shots were 35-22, but it was 4-3 where it counted.
Poehling had two assists. RHP scored his first. Primeau took the loss.

On Saturday, the Rocket played catch up all game. They did tie it up late but still lost 6-5 in OT. Poehling with another two point night (1 g 1a), Ylönen with his first two goals of the season, and McNiven took the loss. Pezzetta is having a great start and popped another too.
Check out that first Ylönen goal.

Poehling’s goal last night in slo mo. He showed pretty decent hands there. A four point weekend in a losing cause x2. Welcome back from injury, Ryan.

Norlinder to Laval for a conditioning stint. This makes it feel like they want to give him a little taste of game action with the big club before they send him back to Sweden.

NHL Network is showing the Rocket vs. the Marlies tonight. Unfortunately, it is stinker for the good guys, down by four goals in the second period. McNiven got pulled but it was certainly not all his fault, defense very passive with passes going across the Royal Road.
Caufield has looked lively. His shots have not been in the prime real estate areas, but he has good jump and came out from behind the net a couple of times to set up mates nicely but they did not cash in.

Wild third period. Ylonen brought the boys to within one with a nice shortie. Caufield tied it late with a laser right above Hutchinson's head. The shootout went on and on (nine shooters per side). Caufield, Ylonen and Harvey-Pinard delivered for Laval. Hopefully that builds some momentum because the very early playoff picture is very crowded.
