Robert Thomas, Nick Suzuki and Josh Norris just signed essentially the same deal at the same age. I always thought bridge deals had the massive advantage of players signing their 8 year deal a bit later, so that when it ended, they were clearly on the decline (see Subban, PK). And now I wonder, of those 3 guys, what happens when they are in their prime and those contracts end. Will teams be able to stop themselves from overpaying players in their prime who have been huge parts of teams for a decade ? I guess we'll see in 8 years. I also find it interesting seeing how centers I thought we might get for Pacioretty are doing differently - Borgstrom and Sam Steel haven't amounted to much, Suzuki and Robert Thomas are living up to their potential. The overriding factor today seems to be that the CAP will be going up substantially in a couple of years, so locking in a young core at what will then be a cheap salary is a good idea. Lots of GM's seem to be doing that, even overpaying on some guys (Nichushkin for example)

And it's a fair guess he'll be overpaid by the end of the deal he just signed.

Can't help wondering if it's a Tkachuk thing. The way the family 'stuck together' during Brady's contract negotiations (or was it the other way around?), gave an indication that they are very centred around themselves.
As an aside, I had a look at Keith's career, which was outstanding from a personal perspective. 1201 NHL regular season games, 538-527-1065 with 2219 PIM. What also stands out is 89 playoff games and only 56 points in those games. More importantly, he missed the playoffs 5 times, made it to the second round once and the third round once. Then there are 11 first round exits. Gives one pause, huh? Matthew's playoff numbers are similar and Brady hasn't been in the playoffs at all, though that isn't his fault.
Matt won the Memorial Cup but other than that, they don't seem to raise many championship trophies. One wonders how well liked they are and how much they are respected by teammates.
Others on that Memorial Cup team were top scorers Christian Dvorak and Mitch Marner, d-men Olli Juolevi, Victor Mete (yup, that Victor Mete). Max Jones, another first rounder, and Robert Thomas were also on the roster though Thomas was just 16. Pretty good team.

The way the family 'stuck together' during Brady's contract negotiations (or was it the other way around?), gave an indication that they are very centred around themselves. I was thinking the same thing earlier ... is this the Tkachuk Family thing or something else ... I never considered what 'something else' would mean until I read this column ... As Flames and Tkachuk barrel towards divorce, Calgary's losses become a cautionary tale Auston Matthews #34 of the Toronto Maple Leafs battles against Matthew Tkachuk #19 of the Calgary Flames during the third period at the Scotiabank Arena on February 22, 2021 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Mark Blinch/NHLI via Getty Images)CALGARY – Although the Calgary Flames’ decision to take Matthew Tkachuk to arbitration was done largely to buy time, expect things to move quickly. No one in the hockey world should be surprised if the superstar winger is traded within the next week or two. A resolution is forthcoming, and the Flames’ filing Monday night can easily be interpreted as a move indicating the Phoenix-born winger doesn’t want to sign anything longer than a one-year contract in Calgary, walking him into unrestricted free agency next season. The Flames can’t allow that to happen (again), so the divorce proceedings begin. Flames GM Brad Treliving and Tkachuk both declined to comment on a situation they’re undoubtedly working together on to facilitate a move to a landing spot where Tkachuk is more apt to ink an eight-year extension. Losing both Johnny Gaudreau and Tkachuk this summer was always a very real possibility for the Flames, but that doesn’t cushion the blow of what is likely to end up being one of the biggest back-to-back setbacks an NHL organization has endured in decades. Two-thirds of the league’s top line, gone. At least this time there will be compensation, and plenty of it, as Tkachuk’s unique toolbox makes him one of the league’s most valuable commodities. Link

The article does not mention Ottawa who have signed 2 Americans to long term deals , including Tkachuk's brother.
Doesn't fit the narrative I guess.

Sad to see the Oil Kings lose their head coach in Lauer, but what a great opportunity for him.
Now, when does Marty fill his vacancy?

Columbus signed Laine for 4 years/$34.8 million. And with the big time cap pressure mounting, Bjorkstrand gets dealt to Seattle for a third and fourth rounder. That is a rather meager return for a 27 year old who pots around 25 goals per season and plays a good two-way game. I suppose this is just another example of how almost all 'middle class' players with term are just flat out hard to move in the current environment.

I'm still baffled by the Gaudreau signing. Other than Werenski and Laine, what do they have?
Voracek is making 8.2 for the next 2 years but only 6 of his 60 points were goals. Clearly not good enough for a veteran that played nearly the entire season. Goaltending - Merzlikins and Korpisalo are both 28 and neither have really established themselves as top class is netminders.
IMO this is an average team that even with Gaudreau will struggle. He'll probably put up good numbers if he plays with Laine but it won't be enough for them to win consistently.

I think Treliving has done quite well. If they can extend either or both of those guys, it's a clear win for them. Huburdeau alone (outside of age difference) would be equal to Tkachuk. Adding Weegar is silly. And I see Zito has learned his lesson about unprotected first round picks.

I think Huberdeau and Tkachuk balance each other off. The rest of the deal is Weegar, Schwindt and a 1st for a 4th. Ugh!
So Florida has lost Weegar and Chiarot off their blueline. And now Tkachuk gets his wish. I wonder how he'll like playing in a stadium with less attendance than the Flames would get for a practice.
When I look at Capfriendly, it seems that Tkachuk has been signed - 8 years at 9.5.

I saw on Twitter the other day the following
What would it take to get Matt Tkachuk? 104 points in 2021-22 season
Someone answered
Mike Hoffman. 130 points in 2019-2022 season
I literally did a spit take

In the short run, I am not quite sure what Florida is thinking here. They have a hole on the blueline and zero cap space to plug it. I really do not see how the Panthers avoid taking at least a small step back this season.
Calgary got a point machine in Huberdeau, who more or less replaces Gaudreau. They have cap space so I suppose they can figure out something to help make up for the loss of Tkachuk's productivity.
If the Flames do not click and have a poor season, Treveling can flip Huberdeau and Weegar at the deadline. If the Flames have a good season, then Treveling could face the dilemma of whether his newly acquired vets so close to UFA status are willing to stick around.

The Florida Panthers must be out of their mind.
To get Matthew Tkachuk, 20 games of Claude Giroux , 20 games of Ben Chiarot, the Florida Panthers have lost:
- Jonathan Huberdeau - MacKenzie Weegar - Owen Tippet - 2023 1st round pick - 2024 1st round pick - 2025 1st round pick - 2024 3rd round pick - 2 Prospects

I can understand Florida’s thinking in moving on from Huberdeau. They were in somewhat of a lose/lose situation, either losing him to UFA or handing out a max term $9M + contract that won’t start until after his 30th birthday.
Does he have another 100+ season in him or does he regress back to the 90ies? How many years until he’s a 70 point player? A max term deal could look not so favorable 3 years in. With Tkachuk there’s much less risk, with most years of a max contract being in his 20ies.

Sort of. The risk as I see it is that Tkachuk, along with Gaudreau and to a lesser extent, Lindholm, had a magical 2022/22 season. The increases were as follows in points per game for their previous history. Tkachuk pre last year, .80 Last year 1.27 Gaudreau, pre last year - .95 Last year 1.4 Lindholm, pre last year - .63 Last year 1.0 Another point that would make one raise their eyebrows....they each played the entire 82 game season. No injuries of any kind. Calgary was generally fortunate in that way last year. Eight players played 82 games. Another 4 played 78+ games. When that happens, there's no adversity, there''s no adjusting to make, it's rinse repeat, over and over again. Makes the season easy and fun. And frankly, there's no way to go but down. Just ask any frustrated Canuck fan about Chris Tanev. With the Canucks, he had the ambulance service on speed dial. Last year, he played 82 games. That defies the laws of physics. Anyway, I can see trouble brewing for the Panthers. I just don't think Tkachuk can replicate 2022.

There will be a little more liquidity in the system because a few clubs have some significant chunks of wasted cap space coming off the books and the cap itself will be slightly higher ($83.5 million), so in that sense Klingberg should have more teams in a position to sniff around.
However, Klingberg is a vet who will be another year older, so if I had to predict I would say he is not going to get more than 4-5 years term.

I'm puzzled. Why would a coveted UFA sign a one year deal? One year in Anaheim is basically getting paid $7m to pass time in California until the cap goes up and more teams are in a position to spend. By the deadline, he'll be on a playoff team. I'd take it.

The Devils avoid arbitration, but they will be back at this again in a year with a very solid player.
