Man, we’re getting old, Dis. When all your icons and heroes from when we were growing up are passing away it’s both sad and disheartening. Great memories of Gilbert winding up for that slap shot of his. Why don’t we see that anymore?
I was trying to remember the GAG lines uniform numbers. Gilbert was 7, Hadfield 11 and was Ratelle 19?
Rest In Peace, Rod.

5' 9", 175 lbs. Early in his career he had to face guys like John Ferguson and later, the Broad Street Bullies, and his size wasn't a detriment. You had to be mentally tough, and he was. A really talented player.

Rest In Peace, Rod. I hear you, man ... Rod Gilbert was from a hockey era where most of my idols played in, and a lot of them are now leaving us ... I always respected his line mates, Jean Ratelle, and Vic Hatfield who, along with Gilbert, formed the Goal-a-Game (GAG) Line ... RIP Rod ... there's an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence, as if they are excited by the signing!

The Flyers still have Nate Thompson so I guess they are promoting 4C competition.
I thought Bergevin would be in on Brassard. I guess he has another target.

Holy mackerel, that’s a lot of benjamins and very early for the guy picked one spot before KK.

Holy mackerel, that’s a lot of benjamins and very early for the guy picked one spot before KK. That has to be the the dumbest early overpay in history. They should of wait for another two years before blowing their money like that. Plus they would have them for two more FA years. Kk hasn't shown that he's that prolific....but that won't stop his agent from trying.

Well....he's a part of the core (with Aho) and you're eating up some of his UFA years. In 4 years, that contract might look like good value.

Svechnikov's production on his ELC was quite good (.29 goals per game), but I think Carolina went all in with him because they do not have any doubts about the kind of player he is. The AAV is high because the club bought four UFA years.
Look at the charming Matthew Tkachuk, Calgary bridged him on a three year deal ($7 million AAV and now his qualifying offer for 2021-22 is $9 million). In other words, they shelled out major coin for zero UFA years. I have a feeling the younger Tkachuk is going to take a page out of his brother's (and for that matter dad's) playbook and put Melnyk over a barrel.

Same money and term as Svech, but this seems like a very good deal for both parties.

Couturier blossomed a little later than some top 10 picks, but over the last four seasons he is very nearly a point per game guy who is a defensive beast. While he is not an elite 1C in my opinion, I believe he is a clear cut 1C (likely top 15-20 at his position) so to buy eight UFA years is going to cost. Sure, the age 35-36 seasons of Couturier's deal will probably not be pretty, but it would have been crazy risky to let him reach the open market.

A superb game tonight between two age old rivals. The USA had quite a run of World Championship wins going until OT tonight. Captain Canada, Marie-Philip Poulin goes bar down in OT to get Canada back on top of the world for the first time since 2012. That is her third gold winning goal (2 at the Olympics, one of which I saw live!).
The Women’s team joins the U18s and the men’s teams as world champions this weird COVID year (a silver at the WJCs). Quite a year for the red and white. The only true way to put a maple leaf on a jersey!!

Contracts for RFAs have been getting done fast and furious this week. One that was interesting is Farabee's. The Flyers get it done 10 months before the kid would have been a RFA next summer. And they give a kid with quite limited experience (107 games-28 goals-31 assists) six years/$30 million. So that will be a decently large AAV for a kid who only gave the club two UFA years. I think this contract reflects the nature of the league now. Young players are getting paid earlier and the old mindset that a club friendly bridge follows the ELC is no longer reality if you are talking about talented kids who you believe are integral parts of your core.

Today Batherson (99 games in the NHL) got the Farabee deal. Even Melnyk seems to be tacitly accepting that squeezing your RFAs is inadvisable even if it is possible.

That is price of having young stars in today's NHL. 9 is a big number when you consider that Billy Guerin only managed to buy 2 UFA years, but hey what can you do?
I bet Jimmy Benning is sweating profusely right now. Not to mention Dorion up there in Ottawa, trying to negotiate with the Tkachuk clan (the old man is a ball buster who is going to squeeze every dollar if they want his boy in the lineup opening night) and all the while his boss is cheapo who refuses to pay July 1 bonuses and front load deals.
And bringing this whole phenomenon back home to Montreal, I think the moral of the story is that unless Molson/Bergevin want to insist on a bridge to nowhere with Suzuki, then it is going to cost serious cap space. Suzuki is not getting less than Hischier.

Suzuki is not getting less than Hischier. Depends. If he isn't on the #1PP and loses some PK time and his overall ice time drops to 16 minutes a night, the point totals may come down and then he'll have to prove himself all over again, right? I'm not saying that's going to happen, but it's possible.

I'm not saying that's going to happen, but it's possible. It is not a lock, but Hischier got 7 x 7.25 coming off his ELC and he is a .635 ppg guy in the league. Suzuki is .646 ppg and he is walking around with the feather in his cap from 23 points in 32 playoff games. For me the only way Suzuki gets less is if Bergevin hides from the reality of what high-end RFAs command these days and insists on "seeing more" from the player on a 2 or 3 year old bridge.
