Over the course of nine or ten years, Bergevin made some good trades. But the Sergachev for Drouin trade was awful.
Sergachev is playing all the high leverage situations now for Tampa. Plus he producing like crazy (24 points in 26 games). It would not shock anyone to hear about him getting some Norris buzz.
Well, I am okay with letting Hoffman and/or Drouin do their thing on the ice over the holidays because my preference is for Slafkovsky to join his Slovakian mates for the WJC. There will be plenty of NHL games after the tournament ends. But it sounds as though Gorton foresees Salfkovsky staying with the Habs. And if Hoffman and Drouin are coming off IR, then it reasons Pitlick and Wideman will be waived soon enough.

Not only for what they would be doing to Slafs' development, but perhaps of greater concern is it would show that HuGo and StL are not as astute as we all had hoped.

In my opinion, the only way to ensure Slaf in on a decent line now, is to move Dach into the 2C role until Monahan returns. If not, Slaf gets saddled on a line not suited for him Caufield - Suzuki - Drouin/Hoffman/Anderson (I'd put Drouin here) Slafkovskÿ - Dach - Anderson/Hoffman/Drouin (I'd try Anderson) Dadonov - Dvorak - Hoffman/ Drouin / Anderson Pitlick - Evans - Armia

Also I would like to see Dach at centre and start developing him there. But it is a bit of a Catch 22 as Dach has done very well with Suze and I wouldn't want to hamper his development/confidence by moving him to centre too quickly. In my mind, Dach has not been as impressive the last few weeks so he may need to be coddled a bit more. The good news in all this is I think without Monahan we are going to struggle so we can proceed with the tank and it will be clear to other gms that Monahan is a valuable player and worthy of a good return.

Skilly, can you put up a video of you dancing like no one's watching? You nailed it, bud.
Yuk, don't know about Hoffman as I'd prefer Drouin there, but two out of three ain't bad.

One thing that stood out to me yesterday, is that it really felt like there was a huge drop off to the team after Caufield got hurt. Suzuki wasn't as effective (though his play in this game wasn't up to his usual standards anyway), the PP definitely didn't feel as dangerous and I was worried when we went to the shootout. Amazing what an elite goal scorer can add to a team.

That is great news if, indeed, Caufield avoided injury from the hit Lewis laid on him. For sure, without Caufield in the lineup the team will struggle even more to score goals. Although it is kind of shocking, given what a good season Suzuki and Caufield are having, that Montreal is 30th in the league with the man advantage.
I know Savard is not held in high regard by a portion of the Habs fans, but still being without him and Monahan until basically the end of the month is going to be difficult. St. Louis and his staff deserve a lot of credit for getting .500 hockey out of this group.

And while they may have been legal, the Flames got more and more brave to toss their weight around. Montreal is not a big team, but someone should have clocked a Flame to send a message. We could have easily lost Caufield and Suzuki as the Flames were looking for dance partners after Kadri was hit .... image if Suzuki was grabbed into a fight

This is where X grabs a Flame and proceeds to remove the...flame. Start with Kadri.
You can't be a part time tough guy.
Also Anderson, Edmy, Guhle can deliver some love too.

I think it would have gotten ugly had it not been such a close game throughout. I mean, the Habs were down by a goal for about 15-20 minutes so the boys probably did not want to get an extra two by starting something. And then once Anderson tied it up, the boys likely heard from the coaches hey be smart, let's win this game.
Calgary was looking for hits and trying to play a heavy game. But I am not really sure who on the Flames was going to oblige Xhekaj or Pezzetta. Would Lewis have agreed to fight? He checks and plays hard but he is a total non-fighter. So I imagine he would have just tried to goad a Hab into taking a penalty. Zadorov can fight but the Habs did not really have a beef with him last night. A couple of times Xhekaj was giving Coleman the business in front of the net after the whistle but Coleman was not going to drop the gloves with the Sherriff. Pezzetta laid out a couple of Flames with clean checks and Mackey tried to stick up for his mates, though he got mauled.
I would have preferred a more concerted response to the hit on Caufield (Dach sort of went over to Lewis and gave him a little playground push, which was not a great look). Hopefully someone (Pezzetta, Edmundson, Xhekaj, Anderson, whoever) invited Lewis to dance various times through the remainder of the game, but he probably declined.

Then we should stop referring to Xhekaj as a Sheriff or our fighter. If you are waiting for RSVPs, then you’ve nullified yourself What’s more important. 2 points or ensuring no one dreams of clocking Caufield like that again? I realize the hit was clean, but that doesn’t matter. We finally have someone who the rest of the league sees as a legit fighter, and we refuse to send the message to leave our stars alone. It’s too late when one is seriously injured.

I agree. At this point who needs the 2 points. The team has to plant the seed - if you go after a Caufield or a Suzuki prepare to pay the price.

It even looked like Lewis was pulling back after the collision started as he was trying to backcheck.

A great fighter is NOT a deterrent unless the other side thinks they also have a few screws lose.
We don't care about the points so X should of just dropped them and pummeled. Even if he got the extra minutes and we lost, it's actually better for us.
Big mistake not to go unhinged at the right time and the right reason.
BTW, it's only going to get worse with Hutson on the horizen. We will need unhinged useful goons to offset CC and Hutson.

Because no one even so much as looked Lewis’ way. Even though it was an “innocent” hit, IMO, someone should have send a not so innocent message back

Good question, JJ. Gallagher would be the guy, but maybe he is still feeling whatever he tweaked. With 13 forwards and 7 d-men, management must estimate they can get through the next few days.

Gally minimum of 2 weeks
Monahan and Matheson should be back in two weeks. Lots of videos of Monahan skating again.
