Carolina would have been a much bigger story this year if not for the Bs and their “best” season stealing the attention. And they are missing a few key guys up front. They sure are manhandling the Devils right now, who still look very shell shocked after their big win over the Rags. Relentless forecheck hockey. Same style that Florida is using to swarm the Laffs.

They sure are manhandling the Devils right now, who still look very shell shocked after their big win over the Rags. Relentless forecheck hockey. Same style that Florida is using to swarm the Laffs. That is indeed their tactic, so the key to beating that is fast, quick transition D-men who get to the puck ahead of the forwards and then get everything moving in the opposite direction....quickly. At that point, the relentless forecheck becomes a situation where you have players trapped deep and the other team has more time and space counter-attacking. I think the Habs have got this under control. Guhle, Harris, Hutson, Barron, all fast and quick. Transitioning is a mix of those abilities and a good system. You may not also need to be fast IF you are strong and have a good pass. I'm thinking of PK, who wasn't fast (though he was agile), but he was strong enough to hold off forecheckers and then he was a master passer. Arber could fit that description. I'm really positive on our team, especially after this draft. McKenzie's latest rankings have us (if we can stay in 5th spot or move up) guaranteed to get one of Berard, Fantilli, Michkov, Carlsson or Smith. The closest I can come up with for that deep a top 5 is 2017 with Hischier, Makar, Pettersson, Heiskanen and Nolan Patrick. No one there quite at Bedard's level, but it remains to be seen how these 2023 draft prospects turn out, of course. HuGo's challenge will be staying under the CAP while keeping as many of the great young kids we have. Drafting and developing well remains the cornerstone. Do that and it makes the GM's job a lot easier.

Florida is doing it with size too. Their top 6 forwards in terms of ice time are Tkachuk (6-2, 200), Barkov (6-3, 215), Verhaeghe (6-2, 180), Bennett (6-1, 200), Reinhart (6-2, 200), and Lundell (6-1, 185). While not a great defensive team, the Panthers really harassed Boston on the forecheck with their size and tenacity, winning puck battles, forcing turnovers, etc. They are doing the same to the Leafs.
I like the dimension of speed and quickness that we are developing on the back end but I'd like to see more size in the top 6. Dach is the only top 6 guy that brings good size and toughness, unless you want to throw Anderson in there (which I don't). That's why I'm intrigued by the PLD angle and getting him sooner rather than later. Suzuki, Caufield, PLD, Dach, Slafkovsky is starting to look like a mix with some nice balance. Then throw in a Leo Carlsson or Will Smith in a couple of years...

Not only is Vegas getting torched on the scoreboard, they are sort of getting bullied too. Kolesar is a tough fourth liner, but he wanted nothing to do with Kane. Bugstad big time wrestled Pietragnelo down rather easily. And what the heck was Carrier doing? McNabb nailed Hyman (clean hit) and Hyman didn't like it so he gave the d-man a slash and then Carrier jumps in on Hyman, though he won't drop the gloves. So why jump in? Carrier is good fourth line dude but hey if you are going to jump in and take exception to Hyman slashing McNabb and Hyman drops 'em and says let's go then why the heck is a fourth liner on a team getting blown out hugging instead of throwing down?

Carrier doesn't sound like a Greco-Roman name, either. Puzzling.

Leafs pushed back in the third. But Bobrovsky and the Panthers held the fort.
Toronto is perfect in OT (three wins) in the playoffs, all on the road, so I guess they are not feeling bad about their chances right now.

And it was Brodie who was beaten by Verhaege for the winner on game 1.
That's now 5 straight games where the Leafs have scored just 2 goals.

I can appreciate it was a well conceived play by Florida. But Brodie had two opportunities (once on the half wall after the Panthers re-entered the zone and once behind the net) to get physical and rub Reindhart out.

Just saw the replay of the goal & your absolutely right. Brodie looked like he just couldnt give a damn. Brutal.
I didn't see the game guys. Why was Woll in there?

Schenn blew Samsonov up, probably damaged his arm or shoulder. Did not look like a concussion type thing.

Brodie has always been a guy with a great stick, decent mobility, and a good hockey IQ, though never really a physical presence, so the only thing I can think of is that at age 33 the wheels are starting to fall off and he misjudged the play as it happened at game speed. Maybe he thought he could get an angle and win the puck with a well timed poke check and start a counter. But when you are slow and you haven't come to grips with this new reality, opting not to make the boring physical play is deadly because you get walked by guys who can skate.

Defensive awareness/execution very low on the OT goal. Flat-footed and puck-watching. Brodie, of course....but also Kampf for not attacking/forcing Reinhart in the neutral zone...then again as Reinhart waltzed over the blue line. At least Lafferty tried a stick-check. Kampf automatically went to cover the slot--but didn't recognize that his right-D, McCabe, had vacated the wraparound space by moving towards Lundell.
Ugh..

Thanks. Wonder what they will do if Samsonov can't go on Wednesday. Sign another emergency goalie? Woll looked lost on the winner.
