Clip from HNIC about Chara on a podcast saying in 2011, the Bruins were motivated because they ‘saw’ the Canucks practicing lifting the Cup and handing it to a teammate. Then he said they were ’told’ it. Kevin Bieksa completely debunked it and made some really good points about how ludicrous it was and that the leadership group which included 3 HoF’rs would never allow it. Vancouver’s practices were covered by the media & Hrudey confirmed they never saw anything like that.
There were some questions about why a guy like Chara would say such things. Precisely. All the hype about Chara being such a classy guy is b.s. Just ask Max Pacioretty. Chara’s a jerk and always has been.

Leafs beat the Flames in OT courtesy of their 6th PP of the game called at the 3 second mark of overtime. Flames had two PP opportunities during the game.

Flames ripped off IMO. Off o/t faceoff the Leaf lifts Huburdeau’s stick so it slides off his own face and Huburdeau gets a penalty and leaves score on PP. Ridiculous call.

Despite their recent good play, the Leafs going into this game were 1-6 in OT. Lo and behold, a lame penalty solves the problem.

For sure, the penalty on Huberdeau was totally lame. I guess the refs and lady luck wanted to help the Leafs exorcise their OT demons.
But aside from those OT problems, Toronto is a flat-out regular season juggernaut once again. And given the motley crew they have had to use on the blueline for much of the season, it is astounding they are third best in the NHL in goals against per game. Yes, their top two goalies have been very good, but there is probably a little more to it than that.
Toronto almost always scores first and makes the other team chase. And their guys really seem to treat every regular season game like their lives depend on it. In particular, I believe top to bottom their group of forwards are perhaps the best defensively in the league. I just hope Boston stays in the pole position, so the Leafs have to battle the Lightning in the first round.

I live in the Leafs viewing region but I dont watch a lot of their games. When Reilly went down along with Brodie and Muzzin I thought their defense numbers would take a hit. I have to agree that there seems to be a commitment to team defense that accounts for their current standing. I dont know if yesterday's game was a blip or a return to normalcy.

Last night's game was pretty good. I admit switching back and forth because the Leafs/Flames was simply faster paced, more exciting and better entertainment. With their injuries, Leafs have to work hard to maintain the defensive quality. Same thing I have noticed with Boston. The thing is that after 82 games, it takes a toll. It's good for T-O to understand and know how to play that way as it should help in the playoffs with the risk being that everyone else raises their game and how much will T-O (and Boston) have in the tank.
A team like the Lightning, for example, is not lighting it up right now. They're working, but at 90-95%. Their talent carries them the rest of the way. They'll lose more games than they should during the season, but should have some more revs in the engine for the playoffs. Aging though. Stamkos and Hedman and Killorn are in the 31-32 range and even Kucherov is 29. Still lots of talent. The team to worry others, IMO, is still the Avs. In fact, all their injuries might work in their favour as those players will not have gone through the grind. But they have to make the playoffs first, of course and that's tenuous today. But their injured guys should come back soon enough to give them a boost.

Beauty! Unfortunately the jerk got his 4th empty net goal in a row. Gotta come up with a new nickname for Ovie. The Right Shhite or something along those lines, but that one's not good enough because there's nothing Scottish about him.

The Ducks are solidifying their position as the league's worst team. They got spanked hard by the Leafs last night and in the back to back games against Ottawa and Toronto were outscored 10 - 0.

Yeah it's going to come down to a 2 team (Chicago and Anaheim) sprint for the right to get the best odds to pick first. Hopefully someone else bypasses them both...sway Montreal

The feeling I get is that he's firmly entrenched in Putin's circle and it's not a case of not wanting to be there. Any silence on his part is because of the optics if he expresses himself honestly (which is to mean as supporting a bullying dictator).

Ovechkin goes from 700 goals to 800 goals in 162 games. At age 37. That 162 games is the third fastest he has recorded 100 goals, and faster than the first 100 goals of his career (166 games)
By contrast it took Gretzky 230 games to go from 700-800. Gretzky scored 19 goals after turning 37. Ovechkin turned 37 in September and already has 20.
It took Gretzky 371 games to score his final 94 goals
Gretzky played 1487 games. Ovechkin just played his 1305th

The cynic in me wonders if there are performance enhancing drugs involved.

So sick of seeing the headlines... glad it's done.... let's hope this is the start of their decline I watched the last 6 minutes or so of the 2nd period. The Rangers did a good job of stifling Toronto. The Leafs didn't have a shot over the last 7 minutes of the period that included a PP and only had 23 shots overall. They did have the edge on total PPs though - 3 - 1.

I hear you, man. But I would say we have months yet to wait. The issues with the Leafs will not really appear until the playoffs when rivals (Tampa) start playing full bore with the knife between the teeth.

Another low point for the Oilers today. They lose 4-3 to the Ducks. Dostál was amazing, especially late in the third when the Ducks were under siege. 46 save win.
