Hattrick watch in Finland as Kapanen has two goals today so far. He heads the Liiga goals and scoring playoff race so far. Not bad!

2goals, 1assist, first star… the Deputy raises his game again when the stakes are high and his team is facing elimination. Game six is now on. Ottawa still up 3-2.

Yesterday, Rohrer scored his first NL playoff goal and got his first NL playoff assist as he helped Zurich win 5-2 and move to 3-0 up in their semi final series.
Today in Sweden, Engström assisted on one goal as Rögle move to 2-0 up in their SHL semi final series against Växjö. Eriksson was the 13th forward again, but did get a hair over 4 minutes of ice time in the game.

Kapanen with an assist as KalPa win 2-1 to bring their semi final series to 2-1 for Tampere. A much needed win against the top regular season team.
Eriksson with almost 11 minutes of ice time and he used it well. He scored both Växjö's goals in a 3-2 OT loss that now moves Rögle up to a commanding 3-0 lead in their SHL semi.

It is hard to argue that Kapanen playing a big role with a SHL team is not good for his development at the age 20. Beck, Mešár and the Deputy will all be added to Laval next year, so he would be competing for key ice time with other touted prospects. Sounds like it could be a Habs’ ELC signing and loan situation. Something to keep an eye on after his great Liiga playoffs so far (although could be ending soon).

Kapanen has been a real surprise this year. Timmins' last draft. Another interesting point was brought out in Basu and Godiin's Notebook. In May 2022, Habs signed up Chris Boucher, formerly of Sportlogiq, to proved analytical information. The point was made on the Notebook that you can subscribe to several analytics sources (which the Habs had done in the past), but it's the relaying of that information to the scouting staff in a way they can understand and apply it to their viewings that is so important. Basu and Godin feel that Boucher has the ability to do that. I assume that's from discussions with him and his explanations to them. Who knows if Timmins had that available to him, or if the team found someone late in Trevor's tenure. Timmins' scouting group, which included Shane Churla, had a good run of picks from 2018 on (excepting KK who in hindsight was a positional need pick in a year where centres were scarce). There were 4 years of really good picks (Romanov, Harris, Caufield, Struble, RHP, Guhle, Tuch, Farrell, Dobes, Mailloux, Kapanen, Trudeau and Roy. Now, it's understood that a few of these guys haven't proven anything, but they remain good young prospects/players and even if they don't make the Habs, they will probably find a spot somewhere in the NHL during their careers. Pretty good work overall.
With Chris Boucher's analytics added to the staff, the early returns on Montreal's scouting remains strong. Obviously, too early to tell for most of the kids picked, but Slaf is a home run IMO, Mesar uncertain, but Beck, Hutson, Rohrer, Engstrom and Davidson are all good picks, especially for where they were picked. We didn't have a second round pick in 2023, but Reinbacher is showing better now that he's in Laval, Fowler is progressing and the early returns on Florian, Konyushkov, Volokhin and Filip Eriksson are all good.
Regarding Kapanen continuing his career in Sweden, I think that's a good idea. Laval may be overloaded with kids next year and adding one more to the recipe doesn't help anyone. Having some guys develop away from North America makes sense.

Big SHL prospects battle continues today with Rögle (Engström) looking to sweep Växjö (Eriksson) in the league semis. In the must win game,Eriksson has been moved up to the second line (he started as a spare forward) and his team is up 2-1 in the second. Engström with the primary assist on Rögle’s goal.

Rögle win the game 4-2 and advance to the SHL finals with a 4-0 series sweep. They have not lost a playoff game yet, despite coming in as the 9th seed. Eriksson’s season is over, but has to be considered a very successful one based on his play in the Allsvenskan, in the Champions League, and in the SHL. Hopefully next season he will secure a full time spot on the SHL roster.
Also seeing their season come to an end today was RHD Kostenko with Yugra in the VHL (second league) semi final series. Not sure if he is even still on the Habs’ management’s radar given the other defensive prospects in the mix.

Other action last night.
Mešár with two more assists in a 5-3 loss to London. The Rangers are in tough this series against the Knights.
Beck with an assist in a 4-0 Saginaw win.
Fowler with a 32 save shutout for the win. He and BC are off to the national final tomorrow against Denver (Harris). An amazing freshman season continues for him and the Will Smith line.

Tappara win 3-1 today and take the semi series 4-1. Kapanen was without a point in the game, and their playoff run comes to an end. Apparently the losers of the two semi series play a bronze medal game. 🤷♂️ Anyway, I don’t see any way he gets signed and brought over to NA given both Laval and Montreal are a few games away from tee times. He could still get an ELC in the off-season that starts next year (and he likely gets loaned to Timrå of the SHL if those reports are true). Anyway, a name to watch for news during the off-season after leading Liiga in playoff points.

It is not official yet, but signs are pointing in the right direction. I expect the delay was with both parties negotiating in which year the deal will start (i.e., can it start this year and burn a year vs the Habs probably preferring it to start next season).
