Hawks beat Leafs amidst anticipation of Matthews’ third hat trick of the season. Snort.
That’s what happens when the pundits focus on one guy. He gets stopped.
Flames off to a terrible start. Outplaying opponents but Markstrom is killing them. When do they go to Vladar? Markstrom is 33 and has fallen off that cliff we talk about. Gallagher is another example. Predicting which guys have staying power can be a real advantage. Patrick Kane. Falling off or not?

Caps put Edmunston on LTIR with a broken hand. He's out at least 6 weeks. When I saw this news I thought of Dach. There both big men with injury problems. Edmunston is 30 & has never played a full season in the NHL.
I dont get how some guys never get a serious injury & others seem to be hurt all the time.

They have bad defence and players who don't like to play it.

I'd wager Toronto's best player so far has been William Nylander. He's looked dangerous every time he touches the puck. Matthews has had some puck luck in his hatties (having Allen to shoot at helps a ton), but he is a good finisher. Give him enough shots and some will go in. Same as Caufield.
Speaking of Caufield, and referring to game #2, he was looking at times like he can beat people one on one. If he gets better at that part of the game, it's another weapon in his arsenal. Having said all that, if Caufield, Newhook, Xhekaj, Harris and Guhle can improve as the year goes along, and stay healthy, it's the best we can hope for. It's looking more like Pearson, Savard and perhaps Monahan are value assets to move at the TDL.

Not surprisingly, TSN still can't let it go. Again this morning they are running an interview with Reaves making excuses. It's been a week now. Pathetic.

Watching Avs/Chicago. What stands out is Colorado’s speed. Not just skating speed but execution speed. The puck moves and its made possible by their defense. Great mobility and speed. On one plau Y Gerard and Byram were in a bit too deep but escsped because a forward covered (and they would have caught the Hawk anyway) but they were fully engaged in position-less hockey.
Lots of discipline too. SOG were 22-8 Colorado.
That’s where we should be headed. We need a McKinnon.

I guess no one at Sportsnet reminded Reaves that he lost his 1st fight. Why do people talk to this has been. I watched the 1st period of the leaf game yesterday & I cant remember seeing him on the ice..

I totally agree. Reaves has morphed into one of the most annoying characters in the league. The media probably deserves some of blame for interviewing a fourth liner so much in recent years. But this dude is seriously out to lunch with a lot of takes, covering up his embarrassment by claiming that Xhekaj jumped him, and now this post-loss nonsense sour grapes drivel saying Perry is not tough. Sure, Perry is greasy and agitates people, but come on man this guy has 1653 PIM (regular season and playoffs) in 1458 games, and while he has never been the upper echelon of fighters he has certainly drop the gloves plenty of times.

Vegas probably benefited from moving on from Reaves when he was still passable as a fourth liner. Now he is a just a heavyweight fighter who cannot skate or competently play 8 minutes a night. The Leafs fourth line gets cratered on a nightly basis. Coincidence or not?
Look, I have no qualms about advocating for guys who bring physicality, play with an edge, and can throw down when the situation calls for it. But my litmus test is basically: can you skate well enough to keep up with a fast game and play a regular shift.

He won a Cup in 2007 and has been to the Finals with Dallas and Montreal. In 2010/11 he won the Richard and the Hart trophies. His 50 goals that season were only 9 less the what Reaves has scored in his entire career. Unfortunately Reaves does not possess the self awareness to realize that as a hockey player he isn't even on the same planet as Perry. He'll just keep shooting off his mouth to clueless reporters.

Wings win their 5th straight. Debrincat gets 3 & leads the league with 8 goals.
Hey leaf fans - Justin Holl with 3 assists.😀

Detroit is one of those teams that never really benefited from a high pick during their rebuild. I think they finished worse one year and ended up drafting 4th. I don't think they got the horses to win long term but good for them in trying to win.

I saw this morning that the NHL has rescinded its rule on Pride tape.
I'm glad to see this. Their stance was wrong & they backed down when Dermott challenged it. Good for him.

And Dermott isn't exactly a household name with a long-term, big-money deal. He could easily have gotten blacklisted.... ie, he was taking a non-negligible risk.

What's sad is that a whole bunch of guys didn't do it. On the flip side, that would have been so embarrassing, the muleheads at NHL HO would probably have dug in their heels.

If they didn't rescind it, then they had to sanction Dermott which would have opened a can of worms the nhl did not want to deal with...

Yup... just in the short term, he'll have a 30 game season at his QO salary rather than be able to holdout for a 2.5M bridge contract. Suddenly, Dorion looks smarter, because signing Tarasenko without having the cap room for Pinto looked pretty silly, when you don't realize Dorion must've known Pinto was likely going to be suspended.

I see Boston running away , but holy crap have they had a soft schedule. They’re going to think they’re superstars, but soon they’ll have to play real teams.

Gave up 2 goals with the goalie out ( sound familiar?) in the last 1:55 and lose in OT. In any case , they have points in the bank.
