To Winnipeg
For 2024 first rounder and a conditional pick
** the conditional pick is a third rounder in 2027 IF Winnipeg wins the Cup in 2024

Not exactly the same haul as z as Lindholm got. Both player were same age , same stats and Monahan had a much better contract
While some are saying MTL made off like bandits, I think Hughes jumped the gun here and could have gotten more. Some bubble team would have been the better first rounder even

No salary retained, so Hughes still has one spot left to move another contract out if he can find a buyer.

In the end, it was two firsts and a conditional pick for a year and a half of Monahan (when he wasn’t injured). Good haul overall.

The Habs will miss their Swiss army knife. Face offs, powerplay, secondary scoring, mentoring. I think it's going to be a looooong second half of the season or at least until Newhook returns and gets into game shape.

Maybe Monahan was given some options and chose Winnipeg... not sure but he was a good hab while he was here and good luck to him in his quest for a cup

I think we have to consider the risk vs reward scenario. We could of waited and maybe got a little more but then Monahan could of gotten injured.
Hughes got his first rounder and saved his 3rd retention spot for someone like Pearson, Allen or Savard.

I think that Hughes did pretty well. Monahan is healthy, producing well and the Lindholm trade put pressure on teams wanting a center. Strike while the iron is hot, as an injury or another 9 game pointless streak could tank Monahan's trade value.

I got a chuckle on The Athletic site when i said I was disappointed we didn’t trade him to Toronto so we’d get a pick around 17 or so.

I'm puzzled by the conditional 3rd round pick because I've read that it only comes into the deal if the Jets win the Cup. I think it's a fairer trade if we include the 3rd round pick into it, regardless. Conditional picks are usually structured so you have the pick, but it gets better or worse depending on what happens in the future. I could see a 3rd round pick moving up to a 2nd if the Jets win the Cup.

True or not, Conroy was able to take advantage of the perception that Lindholm was the clear cut top center on the market. I am okay with Hughes pulling the trigger now since he got a first rounder and it was never a secret that management would give the player right of approval/refusal. And after what happened last season, it is perhaps better to play it safe than sorry because injuries are part of life in pro hockey.
Some of the other teams (e.g. Boston, Colorado) with a keen interest in Monahan just totally lacked the asset juice to make it happen. Others (Toronto) have to save what little they have for a more pressing need on the blue line. Still others (New Jersey) may have been gun shy because it is entirely unclear whether or not they will even make the playoffs. Maybe someone in the media will ask Hughes, but I will always wonder if the Rangers were involved (and if so, what did they offer).

Two realities...
We have another first rounder for a youngster trade like Pinto.
We are far worse without Monahan.
I have no faith in Suzuki/CC being difference makers and our center depth is probably the worse in the league.
Chances are my delete button will melt from overuse.

In the end, it was two firsts and a conditional pick for a year and a half of Monahan (when he wasn’t injured). Good haul overall. In the end, Montreal got two firsts for Sean Monahan (CAL/WPG) ... ideally, it'd be nice to have him re-sign avec les boys, but he may just stay in Winnipeg, if the Jets keep getting better ... and, they just got a lot better by adding Monahan ... the Habs picked up a (more than likely) late 1st rd pick, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Hughes use it as part of a package for a young player he wants ... a huge thanks to Monahan for what he did in Montreal ... Vancouver has traditionally been my second team behind the Habs, but I like what's going on in Winnipeg right now ... Cheers.

Hughes got his first rounder and saved his 3rd retention spot for someone like Pearson, Allen or Savard. He'll have to retain on Allen and Savard because they are both signed next year to $3.85M and $3.5M respectively. Even if he has to retain half on pearson no biggie, they have 7.2M in deadline cap space. He can take some pretty big expiring contracts on...

It will have to wait because Hughes only has one retention slot left to play with. I think it is for Allen. Or if nothing remotely decent materializes there, then maybe he pivots and does something with Savard. Hockey is debatable, though for me Pearson is not tradeable even with retention because it would still be double what you want to be splashing out on a 4th liner.

The only disappointment was that Hughes did not trade Monahan and an add on for a future top 6. Drafting ANOTHER high 20s player is most likely if not certainly another bottom 6 so that a pile of nowhere fast.
What I hope to see with this pick is a draft day package or pre draft trade that gives us what we don't have.
Or maybe a package to a non playoff team for a good young center. Pinto come to mind. Zegras with a heavy add on. Packaging our own 1st (top 5 protected) with another first may get us a home run.
I'm just tired of seeing the Habs in the basement and this trade will guaranteed the sub basement, possibly straight down the sewer line.

We need to sign a superstar in FA or start packaging picks and prospects for one.

It's a no win... he trades Monahan for a first and he should have done better, if he waits for a better deal and Monahan gets hurt then he's a moron for not trading him... We got what the market decided was a fair return(even though most are saying HuGo did great) and I assume HuGo will make a deal at the draft since we have 11 picks combined in rounds 1,2 & 3 in the next 2 drafts.

And it isn't like hockey messiahs are about to invade the ice and make us better any time soon.

Patience, Cranky. It is easier to make a hockey trade in the summer when the non-contenders are in the kitchen cooking too. Hughes has shown plenty willingness to trade valuable picks (see Dach and Newhook) for young NHL players, but the deadline is not the right venue. Teams trying to gear up for deep runs do not want to subtract roster players.
And specifically regarding the Monahan trade today, I think Montreal was never really going to have serious conversations with Chevaldayoff about kids like McGroarty, Lambert, Lucius, and Barlow because the Jets cannot easily attract UFAs, keep looming UFAs, or trade for big name vets who have NTC rights because Winnipeg is, well, Winnipeg. So a GM in Winnipeg needs to avoid deviating too much from a strict draft and development model. If you scan their roster, they have a critical mass of guys (Iaffalo, Niederreiter, Lowry, Namestikov, Schmidt, Dillon, DeMelo, Scheifele, Hellebuyck) in the age 30-33 range so it is understandable why Chevaldayoff is very guarded about dealing kids who represent the nearer-term roster replacements as their roster inevitably starts to turn over.

We knew this season was a hope and a prayer as soon as Dach was gone for the season. So I will watch every game and scream and yell at the TV because I love this team even though I know we will suck.

Everyone is saying Hughes did great because they are considering BOTH trades. Which on the surface looks real good But Winnipeg didn't send us 2 first rounders, but people are treating it like they did. But looking JUST at the Winnipeg deal, Hughes panicked There was more teams than Winnipeg looking for a center. And unless Monahan is pulling a Malakhov (skiing) or a Brisebois (race car testing), there was ZERO chance of him getting injured during the next few days. Montreal doesn't play again until Tuesday. So why the rush immediately after Lindholm was traded? Lindholm is 29, Monahan is 29 ... they both are UFA rentals, ... Monahan has more points, comparable plus minus, and a way better contract. So why does Lindholm pull in a first , plus two players, plus a conditional. But Monahan only gets a first? (The conditional we got is 97% chance of not occurring). People will point to Monahan's injury history. Montreal traded for him because we knew that was a freak injury, and he is at just as much a risk of getting injured now as any other player. On Monahan alone, yes Hughes did good. But when you break them done trade by trade, we could have gotten more from other teams, even if he simply waited until Monday.
