I first knew about it from when you posted it here as a general comment but was unable to find anything ANYWHERE more specific about it then this morning. I found my post about this. It was May 8th and I had responded to another poster that was commenting, generally, about Lindstrom's health issues. It did turn out to be correct but I should have provided a link. I can't remember where I read it now. That he had a back problem was common knowledge, what it was wasn't common knowledge. If he had a pulled muscle, it hurts like hell but it goes away. Ask me how I know. Despite my despise of pills, Advil was my friend. On the other hand, a disk is on a different level of pain and recovery.

Ivan Demidov. I'm not as nerdy as Willie, so sorry, no nice pictures. youtu.be/4BNd0BXuQDIThe one thing that stood out from watching those highlights, the lack of physicality. No one seemed to hit anyone else. Only at the end did I see Demidov using his body and that's when he was trying to regain the puck. On so many of his plays, no one on the defensive team even tried to hit him. That could be because Demidov is so shifty that no one knows where to go to hit him, or it could be that the MHL is a weak league. He seemed to have a lot of time and space and I'm not sure he even gets that in the CHL. ]] Did anyone else feel that way?

I agree we do not know the MHL very much but the kid has serious skills... how that translates to the AHL and NHL where everyone is trying to plaster you depends on how he handles contact. There are also major concerns about how he would do in the playoffs with tight checking and hits and slashes will he become a St.Louis and adapt or become a Marner... also there are rumors SKA will do what they can to keep him when his contract is done. But imagine him and Hutson on the 1st PP unit... jeebus... there would be so much shaking and baking the fans at the Bell Centre would blow the roof off

To me, the risks are his speed, his (knee?) injury, strength of competition in MHL and last but not least, in what environment will he play next year(s)? NHL teams will have the lowdown on some of these points, but to me, Demidov is just a highlight package of a KHLer playing against boys.

If they ain't hitting, they ain't playing...
I've never been to a junior game but have been in lots of AHL games. When I wrote them up as a "scouting report" one of the first things I tried to identify is...is this a game where I can can see the players talent/skill? If it's a blowout against a weak team, I might as well enjoy looking at the blond two seats over.
When I looked at the highlites of Demidov, I saw a certain lack of...no, actually a complete lack of defense. That gives us zero insight in how he plays in heavy, unfriendly games, never mind Neanderthal with sticks on the NHL level. He simply will not have any time and space to stick handle, never mind needing a regiment of Advil pills to handle the pain.
I don't follow juniors like some of you and my first question, is there any junior league that has a tiny but real passing resemblance to pro hockey? Including pain distribution? Otherwise, there is very little one can draw about a player capabilities in Swan Lake leagues.

The Euro leagues are not hard hitting/stick happy leagues, neither is the US college league... The CHL is tougher than the previous 2, with the WHL being the toughest IMO, followed by the OHL then the Q. NWT can be more accurate because he follows prospects more than I do.

Button's latest (yesterday) mock draft has Lindstrom at #5. The top four: Celebrini, Levshunov, Dickinson, Demidov.

Buttons and company skin in the game is to get clicks. All they have to do is appear thay know what they are talking about...
As a GM, I'm going to be cautious and ho low risk because if I blow this and a few more, I don't have much of a reputation, which also means not much of a career.
So is Lindstromes disk healed or is it going to diskapitate me if/when this kids injury becomes a talking point?
So unless I get all my medical staff ready to have their nuts vice gripped if they are wrong, I'm not taking Lindstrome.

Keith Tkachuk fell on his draft day, due to knee issues, yet I think a lot of teams regretted passing on him. Even with his back issues, I don't see him dropping out of the top 10, since he seems to have serious potential, his size would be priceless in the playoffs.

Keith Tkachuk never won any team award in his career, so there may be a few teams who are quite happy they didn't take him. (I can't let go of the Tkachuk family failings, especially after being forced to watch those ads.

Even more people passed up on Peter Bondra. Entire league, seven times. Lindstrome plays a rough game, exposing him to a re-injury that at best keeps him out for stretches, or worst cuts up his career. It will only take one hit from him or by him. If he had a broken leg, it heels, if it's a bad knee, it's now practically a bionic upgrade. But a back is a back and the chances of reoccurring is high enough that it doesn't warrant the risk. He's pegged as a 2C, a top 6, which a lot of his peers are also pegged as top 6. Iginla, Sennecke, Catton are shades of the same level. Then there are a pile of defenseman who can easily be BPA. 5th OA should gives us a foundation piece, not a repeat of the Kk failure.

I wonder if the procedure than Jack Eichel had changes some of that thinking? He's had two years without back problems and has put up a ppg and looked very dangerous since. I'm with you, though, and frankly I'm hoping Lindstrom is picked in the top 4 so we don't have that dilemma.

You can't keep taking defenceman year after year.

If you check out his highlight packages, you’ll see him playing both left and right.

Of all the available Defensemen, he’d be my first choice. He was the key in defeating BC in the championship game and containing the Smith-Leonard-Perreault line. The fact this possibility is out there makes me woder if the Habs don’t already have a trade in place where some other young dmen get moved. It feels like a HuGo plan. He’s not a big guy so I wouldn’t be surprised if Hutson was one of those Dmen.

The last time I read such concern over a draft pick might have been when the Habs selected Andrei Kostitsyn in 2003 ... the knock on AK was that he had epilepsy/seizure problems ... that's what the concerns over Cayden Lindstrom's back issues remind me of ... like Kostitsyn, Lindstrom's potential is sky-high, but it comes with risk ... the Habs medical staff assured they'd be able to control Kostitsyn's seizures with medication, and to their credit, they did ... a back issue is an entirely different injury, though ... I have a different player at #5 but if Lindstrom is available at that time, then I think the Habs will take him ... Cheers.

boy do we bounce around . . . safe is death, but don't take risks.
no one is a guarantee so if you have the stones take the one that you think will help you most (and so we don't have Wright or Michkov).
I like Iggy Jr . . . but have to admit that I'm swayed by the hype and doubt he's on the radar (which is probably a good thing).

I still think he’d be an excellent pick too. He’s played quite a bit at the center position too. Geez… There’s so many players to like in the top 15, it’s pretty wild. A very “Bobrov” pick would be Helenius out of the Finnish league. Not a lot of talk about him, but he’s proven himself against men already and still has upside. To be honest, he’s one of the few selections that I’d be disappointed with, but for all I know he could be the next Aho.

I haven't seen these guys play, I care about the result - I'll follow along with interest but really, I want to look back in 2 years and see they picked a player who is developing nicely, and in 5 years see a player who makes it in an important role.

Demidov's interviews have removed some doubts about him.
a) he's a touch over 6 feet, so not 5' 11'. Check b) his English is more than passable, asking his interpreter only once to clarify how to say, "it is what it is", when summarizing his contract and availability situation. That's an excellent way to say (as Marinaro put it), "it's b.s. but I can't say that". The work on learning English is laudable and goes toward his drive to achieve his goals. Check c) he was moving around naturally, so while he wasn't skating yet, the ankle/ligament issue was healing and probably won't affect his potential.
So.....I don't think he's going to be around at 5. Too talented, despite the competition.
