Were there is money, there is always a way... How KHL's New Arrangement Could Affect Ivan Demidov
Ivan Demidov's arrival could be looming sooner than Habs fans realize.
The full terms of the deal haven't been released, but this is good news for the Habs if all the rumors are true. Demidov seems intrigued to join the Habs, and the Canadiens shouldn't have any issues with meeting SKA's demands.
The fans could see Demidov in North America as early as this year if he doesn't make SKA and gets relegated to the junior leagues. However, there's a good chance he plays a big role on SKA and the Canadiens let him stay home for one more season

awinninghabit.com/posts/how-khl-s-new-arrangement-could-affect-ivan-demidov-01j2cspm0a76From what I was told the Habs expect that he goes to SKA, however, all that means is that if willing they can buy out his contract. They are saying it depends on if they can add a significant body to the top 6 they will likely let him stay in Russia, if not they will probably bring him over.

I wonder if this split has to do with the KHL needing an influx of cash... if so, maybe Demidov is kept in the MHL which will cause the Habs to want to bring him over and SKA will be happy to get a cheque from Molson

So if he doesn't make SKA, don't see him making Habs which might say something about his talent level; unless he intentionally bombs at SKA training camp. It ain't a Stasny train ride but anything to get through the Iron Curtain And Habs should not play him in NHL just because they need a top 6 forward. They tried that with Slafs and it almost cost him his career.

I have ALWAYS argued that you push people to the next level.
If Demogod can handle NHL responsibilities and you need to protect him a bit, DO IT. He's too talented to send him to the AHL just because we can.
He needs to adjust to NHL speed and Neanderthals, fine, easy to do in the NHL. He's not some 160 pound that will fold after a hit. And it's not like we are the TeleTubbies of old.
He's the most talented kid we have in the last...how long? Since Kovalev?

If he's demoted by SKA to the MHL, it has nothing to do with hockey ability and everything to do with politics, negotiating, and leverage. If you wave a big enough cheque in their face, Davidov will be here in September. There was an interesting discussion on Marinaro's Sick podcast. I didn't see the name of the guest, but he was a long time scout for Anaheim and a Quebecer. Seemed very knowledgeable, reasonable and had some good stories. I recommend watching it...on Youtube or your podcast apps. Marinaro asked him to grade the players whose names he would toss out. He had Suzuki as Montreal's #1 centre but felt on a really good team, he'd drop to a 2C. Fair enough. I grade him at a 1B or 2AA+. Very close to an elite centre, and that's my amateurish grade. Demidov, he had as a superstar...120 points a season. Was very, very high on him. Slafkovsky he had as a 35 goal, 90 point winger. I think that's his floor, but good assessment. Many have him much lower and I'm just as adamant that he'll be elite. The guy (I wish I could remember his name but they never flashed it on the screen and I'm a visual learner, so there) said Caufield would score between 30 and 40 goals a season. Didn't think he'd hit 50. My amateur belief says he will and he'll do that more than once.

It depends on who plays the left side of the 2nd line, that will determine how well Cole, Slaf and Demidov do... Cole-Suze-Slaf ??-Dach-Demidov Teams will have to contend with 2 scoring lines.. I also think Slaf stays on the top line because that line needs a big body... another big body on the 2nd line left wing would be nice... Maybe move some D to get one? Newhook or Roy should be fine there but a bigger body might be a nice add.

I like that too. C’mon Waddell, once Laine is out of the program, we can help you with some CAP space.
Hughes will have to do deep due diligence on that deal.

HuGo and Marty will be giving the vets all sorts of opportunity to shine and hopefully contribute or be trade bait. And I'd put good money Beck has at least one year in the AHL before he's ready.

I'm sure they are trying to shed a couple of those contracts but its gonna cost us some picks like it did calgary on the Monahan trade.

Hockey is debatable, but for me Hughes is not even contemplating paying assets to move Gallagher, Dvorak, Anderson, or Armia. Dvorak and Armia are gone soon enough. Gallagher and Anderson are the more intractable cases. But even there, I think by next summer more options start to emerge. With two years left on a contract, the buy out scenario becomes less onerous. Also, with only two years on a contract and Montreal back to having all of their retention slots available, Anderson is definitely movable if Montreal eats some money.
Basically clubs pay picks to move contracts when they are truly desperate for cap space. Montreal will have plenty of cap space next summer.
Regarding Beck, I would be shocked if he did not play in Laval this season. And to be honest it would not surprise if Roy plays significant portions of the season in the AHL.

Unless Joshua Roy has a sophomore jinx year ahead of time, I think he's done in Laval. He proved convincingly in that stint in Montreal that he belongs. In fact, I have him as high as the second line if Hughes doesn't pick up another top 6 guy. Roy isn't flashy but every line he goes on gets better. Bedard said Josh was one of the smartest players, he's played with and I agree. His hockey IQ is outstanding. You can really see that quality becoming the most important in Hab's scouting. The kids they're picking interview well and thoughtfully. They don't tend to use cliches which means they really think the question through.
As far as Beck goes, yes, he will need time in Laval. It's a huge jump from the CHL to the NHL in one summer. With Dvorak and Evans already penciled in as 3C and 4C, there isn't capacity to give him ice time and you want him developing at centre, not wing, at taking a lot of faceoffs and getting game experience. I would not be surprised, however, if when Dvorak is traded, Beck gets a call-up. I don't think that takes place until the TDL.

I don't thnk Gallagher gets bought out though. He'll stick around and be that veteran leadership. Dvo will be traded next deadline and the same with Armia and Savard. Anderson I see being traded with cap retention and not bought out. In fact my trade proposal would of been Laine for Anderson and Harris. Beck will be in Laval until bodies are moved out or injuries. Plus I think the Habs want to give Hieneman a chance.

Roy would be my preference because I think Newhook would fit better on the 3rd line than Roy

Yes, Roy is a smart hockey player. And as you guys rightly observed, his skill set and mentality make him well suited to complement high end linemates. I am just saying that he is a waiver exempt 21 year old with a small sample size (23 games) in the league, so it is entirely possible that he has not played his last AHL game.
