Just to continue that story. A guy I know was out on a walk with Mayor Mayes (who was running for MP at the time). Responding to some comment, his wife replied that the Conservatives could run a fire hydrant in this riding and it would win. True, it would. He was an inept MP. Did little for the riding. I live in a riding like that. Conservative federally since 2004 & Conservative provincially since 1990.

I dread looking at the save % if they’re doing that in this game.

I don’t get why Tuch got a penalty. It looked like a clean hit to me.

Without a doubt if Dobes is in net, much less Fowler, Leafs score maybe 1 goal. In the entire series.

Other then Rein, Mailman, Hutson and Beck, the rest need more another year of seasoning. I like snippets of what Thorpe did but it wasn't enough. Little X is still junior level. Protz is years away.
A LOT of work to be done in Laval. I don't know if Thorpe is in Laval but I can see a line of Thorpe-Tuch-LX growing together into a nasty 4th line in the NHL.
I'm not impressed at all. I expected better or far better from Farrel, Mesar, Kidney, Heineman. I expected more man-against-boys from Rein and Mailman. Hutson came as advertised but he will be less effective as teams adjust. And he will be targeted.
Now let's see the next level in the pre-season.

I am not losing any sleep over a shootout loss and a one goal loss in a prospect series weekend. However, I do wonder why Dobes was not playing one of the games if he is in healthy and in town.
Toronto had basically four worthwhile skaters total, plus Hildeby who has a decent shot of developing into an NHL backup. The Leafs actually had a lot of 22-23 year old guys playing this weekend who never got drafted, played in the NCAA, etc. and then signed as free agents for an organization that can give them chances at the AHL or ECHL level because Toronto has traded so many picks over the last five seasons that they do not have any critical mass of drafted prospects in the pipeline.
The top d-men for the Habs looked good for the most part. The forwards made some plays here and there, but it is rather apparent that none of them has enough talent to project as top six NHLers, which made me reflect today on how fortunate Montreal was that Chicago, Anaheim, and Columbus passed on Demidov. In other words, if the Habs did not have maybe the best forward prospect in the world not playing in the NHL this season, then I would probably feel despondent after watching this little weekend rookie series. I am not saying that those kids are never going to carve out NHL careers. I actually think Beck projects well as a third liner, provided the other two guys are a cut above him offensively. And development takes time, but I believe Xhekaj with his work ethic and strength will nail down a fourth line role with the Habs within a couple of seasons.

I don't know if Thorpe is AHL bound but I can see a rapid development of a 4th line monster mash of Tuch, Little X and Thorpe.
The problem is that I don't know how you improve that line. None of them have any special skills other then size and bad hair attitude. Of course skating, shooting but how do you teach vision? A year in the AHL will just make them more aware of each other's actions/reactions but they will come up individually. There won't be The Bash Line promotion. If for nothing else, there are 5 players who at this point are more likely to step into NHL. Demigod, Hage, Kapanen, Roy and Evans are likely above all of three.
Thorpe...6'5" 212 Tuch...6'2" 203 LITTLE X..6'4" 205
That's a lot of Prime AAA beef...and let's see what the AHL does for them.

For sure, getting bigger and nastier with hard working kids who can actually keep up with the flow of play would be an ideal fourth line recipe for the Habs return to the playoffs in 2025-26.
Perhaps I am mistaken, but I believe Thorpe has to return to the Vancouver Giants this season. So if things progress nicely with his development, he would be more like a Habs rookie in 2026-27 or the following season.
For me it is no problem if Tuch plays the entire season in Laval. Right now he really has almost zero (2 games) pro experience in Laval. But considering he will be 23 years old in the spring, I would hope that he is locking down a roster spot in 2025-26. Xhekaj is a couple of years younger than Tuch, so maybe he will need a little more time to refine his game in the A, but given how he is a late bloomer coming on strong with that family adherence to hard work, it would not surprise me if those two basically break into the league together.

Thorpe is a little more intriguing that just a big body. He showed off a good shot on Saturday and a nice move on Sunday. He also got his stick on a very difficult pass in the third (from Beck?) and redirected it on net while being checked. That tells me he has better than average hand-eye coordination. Also, he's big (duh, yeah Rocky) at 6' 4", 209 lbs. The usual points need to be made. His skating needs improvement, he can probably get stronger, and he was drafted as a 19 instead of 18 year old (though he has a late birthday, Aug 11th). A project for sure, but he has good hands.

I wrote this elsewhere on a Mailman thread...
-------
By far, the best partner for Mailman is Guhle. I rather see him with X just for the physical chaos they would bring and the opportunity X would get to use his 107mph canon. But right now, to get Mailman in the lineup, Guhle. A few years later, X and Mailman.
I know everyone wants to see Hutson with Rein, but you need to see reality of other teams targeting Hutson so he needs to play with a tougher guy. I don't think Rein is much of a deterrent, so Savard would be it. Not that Savard is X, but he's the best solution we have...for now.
Right now we have a bit of the odd couple fits. The most natural is Guhle defensive defenseman and stability with Mailmans offense.
Then there's Matheson who may be best with Rein...for now. But he's got to control his offensive wondering a bit.

I think I heard the Bell Centre was full for the two games. Not too many NHL markets that could draw 20,000 for back to back games involving just the prospects! Props to Montreal. It's been a long time since a Cup but the fan base is still pretty rabid.
My only suggestion would be to wear the classic "home whites" for these exhibition type games, but I want to bring back the home white jerseys anyway...

Tickets were as low as $10 but I didn't see any top end prices. That would help fill up the Bell.

I’m tired of hearing about our prospects are best in the league and losing to the lags that have weak prospects. It’s repetitive year after year.

I don't think I've ever not lived in a riding like that Kingston And The Thousand Islands used to be like that ... provincially, the city was Liberal since 1995 until the NDP's Ian Arthur took the seat in 2018 ... federally, we saw former, longest-serving Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Peter Milliken, hold the seat here from 1988 to 2011 ... as an aside, I had a chat with Flora MacDonald at the old The Duke's pub back in the day (~ 1980) ... I told her that my parents voted for her, at one time ... still, she wouldn't be getting my vote ... that took her a bit off-guard until I let her off the hook ... I said to her that my home riding was Ottawa West and, for me to change my riding for every posting I got, it'd be a pain in the arse ... I finally changed ridings when I retired from the service in 2002 ... oh yeah, prospects ... have to think on that one ... Cheers.
