A day later and I'm still pissed off.. Lousy power play mostly through lousy coaching Lost Laine No team wide toughness No fire and desire in the team I don't see this as "just preseason", i see this as ingrained attitude, coaching and personel. Nothing that can be tweaked in a few games. I was looking forward to this season with so much hope...and now feel stupid to think we turned the corner. As Carey once wisely said: "Chill, it's on;y pre-season." It was not a good outing but that could be for many reasons: rust, not taking Leafs AHLers seriously, not wanting to get hurt (Laine should have adopted that approach), or something other than lack of talent. There is no way this team is an AHL team so something doesn't fit. I'm sayin it was the fact it was an exhibition game and boys were whatever. I'm not assessing this current roster until 10 games in. Unfortuantely won't have Laine but that may not be a bad thing as let others get an opportunity.

I think the lackluster effort comes back to the Laine injury. The players were really hyped to add a guy like Laine. Then he gets seriously hurt and all those hopes are dashed, or at least smothered for a few days. It's natural to have a huge letdown when that happens. How will the team leadership handle this? It's not like the team was depending only on Laine. We have Roy, Newhook, Guhle and a more experienced defense for a whole year (Unless the hockey gods keep intervening, those a$$holes). Laine's injury opens the door for Kapanen. I had thought of Laine as a really excellent dessert after a meal prepared by an improving chef. He was here for sure (almost for sure) for 2 years but there was no guarantee after that, so I didn't include him in my mental future plans. This means we have to grow up earlier and faster.

He wouldn't have a presser if his eye was swollen or a big fat lip or he was crunched by any number of big bodies we have.

Pare sounds like a d-bag. He is not small and he knew the hit was at best greasy, so what has the league come to that this loser puke does not drop the gloves. Can a scrub on a two-way contract who is getting sent down tomorrow get fined by the NHL for an illegal hit? Can the NHL impose a suspension that carries over to the AHL?
I am not sure how management and St. Louis feel about Kapanen on the wing. In terms of versatility among forwards, obviously any center should be able to slide over without too much trouble. But Dvorak and Evans are going to play down the middle, so it would have to be the rookie showing that he can bring some speed, energy, and goals from the wing.

The game was only 40 seconds in & already the pace was too much for him? That's his excuse? If he's overwhelmed that early he has no business in any NHL game.

Laff fans seem to have 2 stories they're going with..
1) Laine is entirely at fault for his own injury due to his wide stance as he attempted to get by Pare
2) Xhekaj should get a huge suspension, comparing his reaction to the Todd Bertuzzi assault.
Truly a bunch of clowns.
We need to really start running their stars. Hurt them. I wonder what Marner would think when he gets a crosscheck in the mouth and loses a few pearly whites
I'm so tired of the Habs always being on the losing end of these incidents. Put Matthews Marner and Nylander on notice. Do not let this slide

Wait WHAT? Were did all of these violence vox populi come from? I'm gonna need a bigger bandwagon...and don't worry, all my screws are loose and will be happy to be your Captain Unhinged Honestly, I don't see on ice "deterrence" anything different then from the neighborhood bullies and violence I grew up in. Until people fear consequences, they wont stop. Worse is if they believe that they can do whatever they want with impunity. Toughness MUST be wide and meaningful. Any perpetrator has to BELIEVE that he will be a target and opposing teams must BELIEVE that we will act. We had that in spades in our glory teams but the last 30 years we become a corporate entity with more concern about being a saleable "product" then a team on a mission. ALL of it can be traced back to Molson and his "investment". The new management is adding some toughness, but it's hardly on a "deterrence" level. We still depend on ONE individual to make everyone an inch taller. In the previous game, Domi cross checked Hutson and our "tough guys" like Tuch, Little X or Mailman didn't touch him. You think that went unnoticed by the Laffs? Or other teams? On the 76 Habs I can name 8 players who would take multiple revenge on Domi, but not us, not now. If you touched Lafleur, Riseborough, Mario Tremblay, P Mahovelich, Lapointe, Robinson, Bouchard, Chartraw, Awrey would take turns to fight or run you and the rest would target your head with a puck. THAT is team toughness, not the illusion and one man show we have now.

The goof says he didn't exepct X to come after him? Really? He must have been the only guy in the rink who didn't expect that. The guy injures a star player of the other team with a cheap shot and he doesn't expect to be a target? I suspect he's saying it to excuse his cowardice in turtling, but please, don't take us to be such idiots. The guy will never play in the NHL as he has no talent and is obviously very dumb and doesn't understand hockey. But he's lucky he won't play in the NHL as he'd likely suffer a career ending injury very quickly.

The Bertuzzi assault comparison is a joke. Bertuzzi suckered Moore & drive him to the ice. That sequence along with a couple of players landing on top of him left him unconcious. He suffered a concussion and 3 broken vertebrae in his neck. He never played again. All this for a hit on Narkus Naslund in a previous game. Moore had already answered the bell by fighting Matt Cooke but I guess this wasnt enough for Bertuzzi. What happened between Xhekaj and Pare doesn't even come close.

A lot of deflection post-game on the part of Pare. You are an AHLer who throws your knee into an NHL star in a preseason and sees him crumpled on the ice, meanwhile the refs do nothing. So Pare thought hey no problem, nothing to see here, why would Xhekaj come after me. Give me a frickin' break. And how does a 26 year old 6'3" 208 lb AHLer not understand the basic precepts of retribution, answering the bell for a dirty hit, and honor? That league is full of short on skill, edgy guys who cross the line, but guess what Cedric they drop the gloves and face the music. What a gutless tool...

Nonetheless, we have to deal with what we have. There is a spot open on the second line. I like folatre’s idea of trying Kapanen there, but I expect Roy will move up. Kapanen can slot to wing on the third, or centre with Dvorak moving to wing. What’s been hurt the most is our depth.
We’re still capable of making the playoffs.
Also, anyone think we have a goalie challenge on our hands? Primeau can’t be waived so he has an upper hand but if both guys get off to good starts, I can see Primeau on the trade conveyor belt.

Hockey is debatable. I think the preseason, which has been extremely frustrating in some regards (injuries, power play), has actually reinforced management's belief that Montembeault and Primeau are basically a good tandem (maybe tilted a little in Montembeault's direction, say 47-35). I do not see either guy getting traded anytime soon since Primeau will still be a RFA at the end of the season.
I actually agree with you, seventeen. For me Roy has every bit as good of a chance, if not better, of proving that he is the best candidate for second line wing. And maybe we should not totally dismiss Heinemann. I know he is waiver exempt, but in some ways he would bring the heaviest presence to the second line.

What happened between Xhekaj and Pare doesn't even come close. True but they are similar in that they were both premeditated.

What we need to do is start scoring goals on the PP. There's nothing to quell people taking shots at you like putting them behind the 8 ball over and over. Coaches and GM's react to that. Naturally, we have to have team toughness, but I don't see that as an issue. The alternative is having guys like McEwen, who are there to retaliate and whose loss you will never feel, but who also contributes nothing when that isn't needed. I want our 4th line to have some grit, but also to play. Thorpe, Florian and Pezzetta or something like that suits me.

The Sens always fight a lot. Wasn't Tkachuk like top five in the league in fights. Their problems are their top six is lazy and clueless defensively, their bottom six cannot score a goal; their d-corps lacks the necessary depth to survive the 82 game NHL meat-grinder.
I will believe in Ottawa if they are in the top 7-9 in the East come March.
I do not think there is really much of any revenge angle for October 9. I would certainly dress Pezzetta just because he plays with an edge and forechecks like a madman; he is fearless; and I do not think guys like Domi and McCabe really want to get dragged into something with him.

And you can be sure Reaves will be in the lineup in a futile attempt to justify his NHL existence.
