Not making a direct comparison to last year, as there are always different factors involved season-to-season....but in 2023-24 we weren't 4 games under .500 until Feb. 21 (22-26-8). At this point (14 games in), we were 7-5-2.

There was hope that Dach could pick up where he left off and fill that void, which hasn’t happened yet.

Why do the Habs keep passing to players who are not open? I counted 17 times before the 3rd period then gave up counting.

This team blows Monty will not be on Team Canada. All this team does is reach and try to stick check. No one takes the body, no one takes the man in open ice, there is no structure, and more importantly there is no heart and want to win From the commentary I've seen on TSN the competition is not exactly fierce. The names I've seen include Binnington, Hofer, Fleury, Skinner and Aden Hill. Hill won a Cup but the rest are not awe inspiring. This is a real weak spot for Canada. The Americans, for instance, can pick from Swayman, Oettinger or Helebuyck or even Jon Quick. Montembault could make it just because he isn't up against great competition.

Team Canada may have to select based on other factors.
Monty kept it at 4-3 with some big saves, while the Habs never really threatened to tie it up. Matheson's O-zone hook with under 7:00 to go didn't help...then it wasn't long before Monty was pulled.
Still...not what you'd call a fevered attack. Suzuki needs a bit more "Gallagher" in him. 1 shot, 1 blocked shot, 0 shots missed. So two attempts all game. Same stats with Slaf. Perhaps the Devils' start indicates their development is truly on an upward trajectory...whereas we're mired for some reason.
Some say it's our coach, some say we simply need more time (youngest team in the league).

Dach is a line killer. Get Slafs back with Suze and Cole so at least we have one NHL line. The hope may have been that Suze would help Dach find his game. Looks like it has had the opposite effect. I'd let Dach play centre on 3rd or 4th line until he finds his game, assuming he ever will. Is he really going to find his game any sooner on the wing? At least Marty didn't have him out there when we pulled our goalie.

I don't know what to make of this team.
We had some hard played minutes and we had lots of brain farts.
One thing...i love Hutson but he's a defensive problem. Lots of ohs and ahs when he recovers a giveaway, but how about all the lost battles.
If we are giving up this season...and soon we will do that...bring in Dobes, Mailman, Roy, Beck and a defensive coach...make this a teaching and improvment year, pick top 3 and call it a season.

Why do the Habs keep passing to players who are not open? I counted 17 times before the 3rd period then gave up counting. It may be lack of confidence. When you are confident, your panic threshold is higher, so you hold onto the puck a bit longer and wait for guys to get open. The way they are playing now is with low panic thresholds, and they're just trying to get rid of the puck, to avoid making a mistake, which is a mistake in itself.

It won't happen because it would mean someone on the D gets traded(I vote for Matheson) and Armia and Dvo get waived and sent down and that will not happen

Habsorbed, for sure, I agree with you. Dach was acquired to play center and by all accounts he believes that is his natural position. I understand that recovering strength and confidence after the serious injury is a real challenge, but he needs center reps for the remainder of this season even if at even strength he is essentially getting third line minutes. And no one is expecting big numbers with no Laine and no Demidov, so just focus on playing solid two-way hockey with Newhook and Heineman or Roy.

This is actually not what I’m seeing. I’m seeing them holding onto the puck too long. Not making the quick pass, and then the player is covered. Not taking the shot, holding onto it and looking for cute plays that aren’t there The Matheson blunder last night. Hutson hung onto the puck too long, trying to get the Devil to commit. When the Devil did, he passed into the feet of Matheson, but a Devil was pressing. Matheson tried to do too much then instead of getting it in deep quickly

No one asked me but it may be time to try Newhook on the first line and put Dach and Slaf together again

I'm hoping to see more of this from Alex Newhook ... he needed a game like this big-time ... what a goal ... as for the rest of the team, it'd be nice if a few of his teammates could follow suit ... Cheers.

He looked kind of alone on that play, but a few teammates were going off for a change. Gallagher was lurking for a rebound, so if you're going to take on the entire other team (who, it's been stated, had a terrible line change of their own), that's a good time to try it. I hope it gives him that confidence boost so he passes the puck faster.

I know it's early in the season, less than 20 games, but let's face it, we ain't making the playoffs. So this season has to be about development. Dach was not brought in to play wing. If he is not our second line center then we got a problem. Who else do we have? Play Dach at center this season and let him figure it out. If he can't then HuGo know to get active looking for a legit top 6 center which we do not currently have if Dach isn't up to it. Bottom line with this season is the "high expectations" everyone had was based on the addition of Dach and Laine. We now know we got neither. Accept our fate, and prepare everyone for next season. And those that show they aren't going to assist next season or in the future can move on. In short, this is now a developmental and experimental season. Let's see who is worth keeping and who can be shown the door, along with Dvo and Armia. The rebuild will not be complete until all the QuadSuad have departed. In reality, I don't know who we're kidding on the time frame of this rebuild. Both Buff and Ott have been at it a lot longer than the Habs and they ain't making the playoffs this year either.

Incredible huh? Some POS Leaf AHL'r changes the entire direction of our team this year. Laine wasn't going to make us a playoff team, but the mindset and expectations of all the players had to change after he was hurt.
