Nice touch, Dis. Good article by CBC Sports from Sept. 4/24. It'll be an emotional moment for CC. ======================================= Jackets will be on the second of a B2B. Which current bottom-feeder is hungriest...

We "should" win this one but I wouldn't put more then 3 strings of boiled spaghetti on that.
I'm putting the blame on SmartyMarty for not being able to analyze what he has and work with that. His "system" was a figment when we played Buffalo and we simply were a better pond hockey team.
This can't go on forever. It's DESTROYING our players development. Plus if we have given up this season, might as well bring up Roy, beck, Mailman and Dobes. Wait...I said this 4 times before...

The Blue Jackets outplayed the Penguins and the scoreboard reflected that tonight. Assuming their goalie tandem splits the back to back, it will be Tarasov in the net tomorrow.
By the way, that second round pick from Pittsburgh next summer is looking nice. The way the Penguins are floundering this season, I would be surprised if it is not in the 38-42 range.
I think with seven losses in eight games, hopefully Hughes and St. Louis huddled today and figured out that the lineup needs tweaks. Caufield should be on the first line where he has good chemistry. Dach needs to restart his trial by fire at center. It does not need to be a 'hot' trial because I do not really care which line he centers. His ice time needs to be contingent on not only offensive productivity but also the degree to which he shows he can play a mature game (reduce number of head scratch missed passes, win more puck battles, etc.).
I know that Coach St. Louis is loathe to scratch Armia because he is a PK1 fixture. But I really think Montreal, in comparison to recent opponents like the Capitals and the Wild, simply have a glaring deficit of intensity and edginess in the bottom six. I would insert Pezzetta into the lineup because the bottom six has almost zero grit (I am counting Anderson-Dvorak-Gallagher as the second line). And I continue to believe Xhekaj has been instructed to avoid blowing guys up and fighting because the coaches fear the 2-5-10 scenarios where the shaky d-corps gets left with five guys to weather the incoming storm. That is why Montreal as much as any team in the league cannot afford not to fill one of their fourth line winger slots with a guy who hits everything in sight, defends mates, and give opponents pause about what he might do if the game gets nasty.

I have no doubt HuGo believes they can't do anything until the QuadSquad leave town. Not only are they uselss on the ice, they are eating up a lot of valuable cap space. - $20 million. Think about it; that's almost 25% of the cap. They have a total of 14 goals, including Dvo's empty netters. Perspective: Cole and Suze have 18 goals and they cost us $16 million. The Quad Sqad are all past their prime and Cole and Suze are approaching theirs. Other than Gally, the best of the Quadsquad, I'd be surprised if the other 3 are around by next Sept. HuGo can't afford another tank year. And yes, that is what this year has become. But it better be the last one!!!

I love to see what happens when X goes in front of the net and they try to cross check him. The other benefit is that he becomes a complete and utter distraction for the other team. What I don't understand is why Smarty doesn't go past the orthodox road. It's not like every point is getting us anywhere near the Promised Land. For us, it's on another planet.

I agree on all fronts! Cole, Suze and Slafs should play together. Not only to make us competitive this season, but that line is our future. Either Dach has lost it, or he needs more reps. Those reps can occur on any line - just give the guy at least 15 minutes a game. If he can't find his way, then we can pine about Romanov. The team lacks intensity on all lines. But usually a team can rely on their 3rd, and certainly their 4th line to step it up. Why Pezz is in the dog house doesn't make sense to me. And usually the 3rd D pair is good to show some strength. Let X play his game!!! it's like the coaching staff saw X to the extreme in exhibition games and decided to shut him down. DUMB! At this point in the season, Marty, and Hugo, should be trying their best to let each player find his identity and what is their force. We all know what X is all about and why he gave up his Costco job. Let X play his game!!!

If Marty was the genius hockey mind the pontificators claim, why not have X in front of the net on the 2nd PP unit. Who would rather see Armia, Josh or Evans up front on the PK? Not me - they have zero offensive skill. And with Lane on the point, I'm guessing that would cause way too much havoc for any PK unit. And that way we get X on the PP and Cranky would be happy - sorry, I meant less cranky. It's a win win for the hockey world.

Dead serious...I had my own company since the early 90s and I made money by re-inventing the wheel. I ALWAYS built products on the concept that I will innovate and separate my product from others. Compete on innovation, not the last penny. Now I still am a bit active and I still preach the same thing. These products go to companies like IKEA. That is EXACTLY what I want to see from SmartyMarty. A really brilliant coach would figure how to max out the skill of his players rather then fitting all his players into a system...which has no credibility nor success to begin with. You got a beast of a man? How do you blend that beast with Hutsons skill and CC dead accurate shooting? Suzuki vision? If X is wreaking defenseman in front of opposing nets and has one defenseman constantly trying to get X out of the goaltenders face, it just turned into a 4 on 3 and a massive circus in front of the net. Now Hutson has more room to skate, Suzuki and CC more room to play pitch and catch. How do you defend against this? You can't. It's NOT the first or tenth time this was used before. We did it with Gally before he got too bang up. Now imagine what X will do with his size. Like you say, pointificators make claims of his brilliance...but I see no PROOF of that. NONE. All I see is a season that is getting closer and closer to another flushing.

And speaking of X's development; playing him in the O zone in front of the net would assist him greatly in understanding how to defend the front of the net in the D zone. This season should now be all about trying things out, including out of the box. Let's see if Marty gets it!

Listened to Basu and Godin (where I either get ideas or disagree) and they discussed Marty's after game presser, where he emphasized that Struble's mistake cost the team badly. I didn't see most of the game but caught the third until Minny went up 2-0 (Like Vince Carter says...."It's over"), I saw that whole penalty kill and the Habs handled it really well until the roaches managed to get the puck in the zone in the waning seconds and score. In any case, they got shut out. Isn't that a better reason for the loss than a rookie's unfortunate high stick? According to B & G, Struble and Xhekaj had played well. But Marty emphasizes that play. Godin's take is that Marty was using that as an excuse to insert Barron into the line-up.
Ok, now I don't think getting Barron back in is a bad idea. I always thought Xhekaj, Barron and Struble would rotate because they all need ice time and you don't want to sit someone too long. What I have an issue with is what Marty just did. There's no reason to publicly shame Struble. If you want to put in Barron, just say that Struble and X have played well, but Barron needs his turn. Simple as that. That's the truth. I did not like that Marty felt the need to provide some rationale which wasn't necessary in the first place. Once you go down that road, you're looking for trouble. In fact, I think it's already happening. The excess favouritism shown to the vets will not have gone unnoticed. Interesting that the guys showing the most intensity and drive are the vets and not the kids. Who is being rewarded, whether or not they deserve it?
Maybe Marty has some super psychological reason for handling our kids like he is, but an alternative is that he just thinks he has some super reason and is grossly misjudging the situations. According to B & G, there has been improvement in the defensive schemes. Minny's key goal came off a Dvorak screwup turnover (Gee, Marty didn't make an issue of that at all), but the Habs didn't give Minny much at all. Fair enough, but you get improvement at one end and they fall off a cliff at the offensive end. Is that progress?
If this team isn't playing a full 60 minutes at both ends of the rink by the end of the Christmas break, I think Hugo have to seriously think of making a change over the summer. If another good coaching candidate becomes available (not Quenneville) it might make sense to do that before the season ends. I'm not getting good coaching vibes. Too much ego involved.

I dont watch a lot of post game press conferences but I rarely see a coach lay the blame so directly on a player. This is the kind of thing that should be said one on one. And this isn't the 1st time he's done this.
The players need to clean up their mistakes but so does the coach.

Two weeks after he threw X under the bus, now he picks on Struble in public.
We had BargainBin who wouldn't get a managerial job at McDonalds and now we have SmartyMarty who wouldn't survive 1 week as floor supervisor. HR would fire him before his first paycheck.
The problem comes from the top. Mol$on inherited his privlidge thru his name and doesn't know how large pro organizations run.
I would fall over and cry if these guys knew how to be pros at their job. In fact, i don't think they know what "pro" mean.

I wouldn’t lump Hughes or Gorton with that non-professional tag. Hughes ran a very successful player agency with no controversy that I ever heard of. Gorton, in about a year, laid the foundation for a lot of Bruins future success (2006 draft -Kessel, Lucic, Marchand - and signed Chara as a UFA). Then he went to the Rangers and laid the foundation for that team, with some luck in the form of Fox and Panarin.
They made a risky call with hiring MSL but it worked ok the first 2 years when development was key and despite a lot of injuries. I mentioned early on (equating the development of a coach with that of the owner of a growing business) that there comes a time when the owner’s role changes from doing it yourself to delegating and supervising others to do the same but higher volume of work the owner used to do. Marty is great one on one teaching and developing. But can he move to the next role of installing a system and getting players to follow that system, combining those 2 qualities to produce wins? Coaches often learn that at lower levels and refine it as they move up. Marty is learning it at the top level. It takes time, which the team and fans probably can’t afford. Has he refused help? Has he asked for help? Hiring a coach’s coach seems the wrong short term move for me.

If Hughes and Gorton are pros then why is Marty behaving like a more refined version of...MThead?
Is it that hard to explain to him some basic rules of personal management? Public shaming is on the top of the list that no pro does.
"Listen Marty, how would you feel if i said that you are responsible for all our loses and i have to fire you for your incompetency?"
I bet Marty would take that as a kick in the face.
It isn't that hard for pros to expect pro behaviour.

Things happen, it was unfortunate, but yeah it was a bad penalty. I did not watch the post-game presser.
Regarding Struble and his place in the lineup, I have no problem with a rotation. Struble was very good in his first 20-25 games last season and then he fell off somewhat. I would generally say this season has been a continuation of that latter portion of 2023-24. He is still a young d-man with a lot on his plate, as are all the players trying to execute an overly complicated system. Struble, given the fact that he is not a play driving blue liner, gets caught up ice too much for my liking. And while I am sure that he is following the coaches' directives, I think he tries to hold the offensive blue line for too long given the fact that Habs' forwards give the puck away a lot and with the 'high' forward often being missing in action, a failed pinch can turn the neutral zone into the autobahn and poor Montembeault has already faced a crazy number of odd man rushes this season.

Montreal used to be that franchise that went all out for these pre game ceremonies. Ever since opening g night last year, they have dropped the ball time and time again.
This Ring of Honour ceremony was bland as ... *$#@
A 30 second montage of voices of players basically all saying he was a good leader, then Shea on the ice for a 30 second speech where you could tell he wanted to be anywhere but on that ice. Where was Shea's family? Where was past teammates? Where was even the presentation of whatever they give players to show they are in the Ring?
And the Ring of Honour itself is bland too. No blue-blanc-et-rouge on the "plaque", no years played or year inducted. Just Shea Weber 6 in black and white
