The odds of winning this one is about the same as me birthing triplets. But...ya never know fer sure.
I fully support X smiling at McJesus and asking how are his knees. Ya'know, in a friendly, concerned wolfy kind'a way. Nicholson smile optional...

Oddly, Montreal's special teams are outperforming Edmonton's in this still early season. However, something tells me the Habs would do well to stay out of the box tonight. The Oilers are running a rag tag d-corps (look at some of these names: Stecher, Emberson, Josh Brown, Dermott), so it would behoove Montreal to step on the accelerator at even strength and see which of those guys fumble and buckle.
By the way, I cannot believe it is almost the quarter mark of the season and neither Dach or Newhook is playing down the middle.
I am also surprised Barron is coming out. I thought he played a simple, quiet game against Columbus.

I thought both pp units moved the puck very well against cbus. That said when the Oil have their pp going their puck movement is incredible.

McDavid's line is dominating possession thus far. However, I think the penalty was a hey let's just give the superstar a call type thing. McDavid did not have the puck and Anderson did not impede his path to the net, so it was a lot of meh in my book.

Sigh. Guhle can't stay healthy. If he's out for 6+ weeks with a broken hand then we're finishing bottom 3 for sure this year.

Hyman was being cagey. He just moved the puck a second before the Sheriff blew him up and he stands up and acts like the puck was never part of the play.
Montreal is struggling. The Oilers are fast (they are actually not overall a fast team) but they are because then they constantly possess the puck and sling it around, it makes the Habs look incredibly slow and disorganized. In reality, the Habs are not one of the slowest teams in the league, but when the d-system is a mystery to most of the guys trying to execute it, things get ugly rather easily and to the nth power against elite talents like McDavid and Draisaitl.

MSL has had enough of a sample to realize that their defensive zone coverage--be it fully zone, fully man-to-man, or hybrid man-to-man down low/zone up high--ain't working. What systems are SUCCESSFUL teams using? How difficult can that process of elimination be?

Good questions, CH. Look, I do not doubt that Paul Maurice and Laviolette make the hybrid system work nicely with the excellent, veteran groups that they has coached over the last decade. And the cherry on top is that those gentlemen have been coaching it for years so young guys get taught by a master.
As far as I know, St. Louis never played in this system and he has simply grown fond of it by watching teams like the Panthers and the Rangers. So Montreal is in a tough spot. The team is very young. The coach is very inexperienced and never served on the staff of a sage old coach who showed him how to teach it.
In my mind, there is no question Montreal would be far better off playing a zone system.

I'm not 100% certain but it looks like they can play zone better then man/man.
In one sequence they played man/man and the oily ones were running them raggad. Looked like ring around the roses.

Dach just chipped the puck in the neutral zone and two seconds later got checked by an Oiler, he should have taken a page of the Hymen thespian playbook and fallen down and looked at the ref like hey man that's interference help me out here.

What has happened with Jake Evans. He gets sprung on a rush at the end of a PK. He could have drove the net or fired a shot (no one was really on him), but instead he puts on the breaks as he crosses the blueline and makes a pass into traffic ... the team really has lost its heart

Why when they have the puck and can skate it into the O zone, they instead shoot it in and lose possession?

Moves him past Stephane Richer (225) and into a tie with Max Pacioretty for 18th on the Habs all time list
