TSN.ca CONFIRMS it's Julien: www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=23340Canadiens fire Therrien TSN.ca Staff 1/17/2003 The Montreal Canadiens have fired head coach Michel Therrien and TSN has confirmed Claude Julien is the next head coach of the club. Julien was under contract to the Edmonton Oilers organization, coaching the Hamilton Bulldogs, the top team in the American Hockey League. The Bulldogs are a joint farm team for the Canadiens and the Oilers. The Canadiens lost 4-1 to Flyers in Philadelphia on Thursday night after posting a season-low 17 shots on goal. The Habs have won just twice in their last 12 games and are winless in nine straight road games. A week ago, the fiery Therrien was fined $25,000 by the league for "abuse directed at the on-ice officials" after he berated and critized the referees following a loss in New Jersey. Therrien, 39, replaced Alain Vigneault as head coach on Nov. 20, 2000. Prior to Friday's games, the Canadiens were fourth in the Eastern Conference's Northeast Division with an 18-19-4-5 record. Last season, Therrien led the Habs to the playoffs for the first time in four years. They reached the second round, when they were beaten in six games by Carolina. Before he was hired by Montreal, Therrien coached Canadiens farm teams in Fredericton and Quebec City. In 1996, he led the Granby Predateurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to a Memorial Cup title. In four years in the QMJHL with Laval and Granby, the Montreal native posted a .712 winning percentage. Julien has a long track record of success as a head coach. He led the Hull Olympiques to a Memorial Cup championship in 1997, putting together a 145-118-19 record in four seasons. He coached the Canadian National Junior Team to a Bronze Medal finish at the 2000 World Junior Hockey Championships in Sweden. He also won the Silver Medal as an assistant coach of the National Junior Team the year before in Winnipeg. In 1997 he was the head coach of the Canadian Under-18 Team which won the Gold medal at the Three-Nations tournament in the Czech Republic. Julien took over the Bulldogs in April, 2000, and has helped turn them into the best team in the AHL. They are 33-6-3-3 this season, and went 18 games without a loss during one stretch. Therrien is the sixth coach to lose his job in the NHL this season. The San Jose Sharks, Atlanta Thrashers, Calgary Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche have all made coaching changes.

I really believe that the players " tanked it " . This is a hard thing to accomplish without being too obvious. MT even contributed to it by over-using the fringe players.

Well, something had to give. You could just see it watching the players that something was terribly wrong. It's not that we don't have the talent there, they're just not motivated. I mean, I know it's ultimately the player's responsibility, but obviously coaches have an impact. That's why guys like Scotty Bowman continue to win.
Is Claude Julien another Scotty? Uh, probably not. But he's a fresh start, and we desperately needed that. Also, with his familiarity with the Hamilton players and his lack of bias towards any of the current Canadiens players, I think we can see a more even-handed approach to using the players available.
It's hopeful!

Julien:
''My teams always come out hard playing with emotion, working hard, etc ''
Let's hope he can translate this to the Habs...

Well, it's about bloody time. Question is, can the Habs still somehow salvage the season and make the playoffs? It will be tough sledding that's for sure. As each game passed, Savard was starting to become more and more of a dirty word in my house. I really didn't know what he was waiting for. It's been so obvious that Therrien was out of his league, even to the casual observer, for so long that is was quite sickening. Green should have been shown the door as well.
