A newly acquired appreciation for this band. Lately I haven't been able to get these songs out of my head.

Thanks for those clips, CV....I'll have to check them out further. Love the "Bonham" Ludwig setup. Two great prog-rock (yet, not mainstream) bands from the 70s. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Captain Beyond (First three cuts from their self-titled debut album 1972.) Rhino on guitar, Lee Dorman on bass (both formerly of Iron Butterfly), Rod Evans on vocals (Deep Purple's original lead singer), and Bobby Caldwell on drums (formerly with Johnny Winter). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gentle Giant The Boys in the Band (from their 1972 LP, Octopus). Phenomenal musicians and intricate arrangements. The three Shulman brothers and the rest of the band (except for the first two drummers) were multi-instumentalists. Lots of medieval and baroque elements as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Acquired tastes, both of these bands. But every once in a while, I like throwing on the CDs. If you're in the mood for it....great stuff.

Didn't know Jigsaw's lead singer was the drummer.
Although, I truly admire that asset (and wish I had it) I don't think it lends itself to a great connection with the crowd in a rock/pop live performance, if he is the main lead singer. A guitarist/lead singer can move around...a keyboard player is as stuck to his instrument as is a drummer...but the keys are very musical...and they can be out front....turned sideways, etc. And course, the Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant, Steve Tyler front man likely has the greatest chance to connect with the audience.
How many groups had drummers that sang lead?
Very few that I know of.....three off the top of my head....
1. Pete Rivera of Rare Earth...the main singer for sure.
2. Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad on several hits....most notably one he wrote...
3. Skip Prokop of Lighthouse sang lead on the hits Sunny Days and Pretty Lady.
Anybody know of any others? I'm likely missing some obvious ones...but don't have the time to remember/look em up.
After Nirvana, Dave Grohl left the kit and went out front to play guitar and be the lead singer for the Foo Fighters. Likely for that reason....to better connect with the crowd.

Some singing drummers:
Phil Colins, Sheila E. and Peter Criss all come to mind.

Way to go, CV. But do you really count Mickey Dolenz? I think Karen Carpenter was the first drummer (let alone female drummer) that I saw sing lead. And how could I forget Levon Helm? Even though I never liked "The Band"....I certainly knew Helm sang lead on quite a few songs. Don Henley and Phil Collins....of course....two of the best. (I wasn't heavy into their music at all.) Worked for them. Here's one of Ringo singing lead LIVE on stage with the Beatles. Thought he was a studio-only singer back then. \ Not too many pop bands had the drummer as the namesake of the band as with the Dave Clark Five. Drummer Dave Clark was usually front and centre. Even the lead singer was off to the side or in the back.

Karaoke night with The Beatles.
McCartney said once that Ringo was the worst drummer in the band.

Karaoke night with The Beatles. McCartney said once that Ringo was the worst drummer in the band. That isn't lip-synched. But it's not much of a gruelling song to sing along with either. But he did it. I think McCartney (or Lennon) was asked if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world, and he responded, "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

I am ashamed and embarrassed to admit to knowing that Larry Evoy sang lead for Edward Bear.

My son went to a Tool concert the other night here in Kingston and the singer was in the back of the stage sharing the same platform as the drummer and never stepped off the entire show. If you look at live Tool footage from the current tour you'll see he's usually in the shadows as well.

I meant he's clearly not a professional singer. You know - he's bad.

Criss had/has a great scratchy rock voice. "Black Diamond" is a good example. He's gonna be 65 this year. Geez....I remember being in a KISS air-band in high school...1977. "Detroit Rock City" and "Shout It Out Loud" were the tunes. How long ago was that? My parents shot it on Super 8 film. No sound.

I know when I was walking out of Magnetic Hill park I looked back and couldnt believe the crowd ... I thought I heard that there was over 90,000 there??? ( that not far off the population of St. John's ) Going to Iron Maiden in Toronto in July too ... must be my mid-life crisis that I am getting back into the heavy metal stuff again ... LOL ... (boy was I ever upset when I found out U2 is playing the same day as the Iron Maiden concert!!! ... if I knew that .... "ello ello, in a place called Vertigo!!!" )

I spent way too much money last summer on concerts...seen Paul McCartney as well.

I always liked the song Beth ... and I guess that's part of the reason its my youngest daughter's middle name ... Number 2 on my "that's a love song? Give me a break!" list. Number 1: ['course, when I first heard the song "way back when" I wasn't thinking violence I was thinking that . . . well . . . never mind, its supposed to be a family station here.

This is a long video but I enjoyed all of it. Maybe you will too. Levon Helm is one of those masters of his trade whose work no one can replicate. Enjoy.

Was watching an 1963 episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show".....and thought I recognized the auctioneer's voice. I looked it up and sure enough, I had. Very famous voice. "The Masterpiece" Part 2It's none other than Alan Reed....voice of Fred Flintstone. Here they are in the studio. Alan Reed (Fred); Jean VanderPyl (Wilma); Bea Benaderet (Betty); and the one, the only Mel Blanc (Barney). You might know Bea from her roles as Cousin Pearl on "The Beverly Hillbillies", or as Kate on "Petticoat Junction". And of course, Mel Blanc, who was virtually every voice on the Warner Bros. "Merrie Melodies" cartoons. EDIT: And if you watch Part 3 of "The Masterpiece", the art expert is played by another famous character actor, Howard Morris. He appeared as Ernest T. Bass on "The Andy Griffith Show".....and also performed many cartoon voices for Hanna Barbera ( The Flintstones, Magilla Gorilla, etc.) Also the voice of Beetle Bailey. Coming full circle in this post, Morris was also in "Your Show of Shows" with Carl Reiner, who was the creator of "The Dick Van Dyke Show".

Alright - a bit of self-interest in this one, but since this is the music thread and my brother's band has finally posted a "music video" (they have a few clips from gigs or acoustic versions of their songs up on Youtube, but no music videos") I present to you Sympathy by Decade of Sleep: If you like, you can hear many of their songs on Youtube (performed live for the most part) and the are also available on iTunes and at www.tangentsnorth.com/store.php

Just surfing around....(with a scotch...not a rye) and came upon the horrific story of Ed Gein. A truly sick puppy whose diabolical deeds influenced the creation of pop-culture horror characters Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs). Had no idea such a beast had existed. WikiThere are a few docu-features (with some graphic pics) on the web.....but I won’t post them here. "You can’t save everybody, folks....just try not to be living next door to them when they go off." Dennis Miller.

Since it's the original Flintstones theme song, it has to be circa 1960.
50 years ago. I was about 2 years old when this commercial hit the airwaves.
Cartoon characters smoking/selling cigarettes.
Hilarious!
Not to mention the sexist overtones.
The Flintstones was on in the evening back then.....but kids still watched it.
