Dogs finish off their pre-season schedule a perfect 2-0. Now that's what I call a nicely compressed schedule. Two back to back games, in two QMJHL rinks, both games against the Bingo Senators. Most of the Dogs got more games wearing the CH this fall...too weird. The Baby Sens are the defending Calder Cup champs, so nice to see our depleted lineup faring well against what should be a decent opponent this season.
Anyway, recently signed DeSimone, try-out hopeful and recently graduated OHL defensive scoring wizard McFadden, ex-Drummondville Volt Dumont, and savvy vet Willsie netted the four goals for the good guys. Willsie's came with under 20 ticks left to seal the deal. Dumont received a first star in his homecoming. I would have cried fix if not for that goal lol.
The Habs also invited goalie Nicola Riopel to the Dogs camp today as it sounds like Lawson (the projected #1 in Hamilton this season), may have a little injury. No way they want to start the season with Mayer playing any significant time. Delmas has not yet seen any action as he is still on the mend.

I don't think Tinordi had any intention of making initial contact with the head...but that's what happened with his shoulder pad. The Chara phenomenon.
Taller players still have to be aware...even though Chara has gotten away with it. If Tinordi hits an NHL player like that, Shanny's taking a good look at it....and I hope he does so with Chara.

Yeah, he is going to have to learn to keep on his feet and not look to be targetting someone's head...although he is 6'7" and that is always a problem with the big guys not named Hal Gill. He really exploded into that body check though.

I was going to come here and ask why Gallagher was sent down when the smurfs they pay millions are doing jack squat for a solid month now?

Thanks NWT. Kristo's probably the closest to making the Habs, but its good to see each of those guys succeeding. They probably have good coaches

Gallagher with two goals already in the first period. His 15th/16th in his 15th game. He is on TV out west here next Wednesday, so will get another good look at him again. So much for the NHL training camp hangover. Like to see this in a player.

Gallagher ended up with two goals, an assist and first star honours. He's showing some mental toughness by improving his stats despite being sent down after a good NHL camp. I really wouldn't be surprised if he makes the team next year. What I can see is Cammy being traded and Gallagher taking his place as the team's sniper. Difference is that Gallagher gives you a lot more effort. Hopefully he keeps improving his skating and his strength, those 2 key areas for most players.

I like the way Darren Dietz (D) is coming along on the Sakatoon Blades: 22 games, 4 goals, 10 assists, 14 points, plus 19. His team is a leader but so far not dominating the way they did last season, so given his scoring is on pace to be up 50% and his plus/minus is excellent he seems to be progressing well. Beaulieu seems stagnant statistically but his team is not dominating as much as they did last season so perhaps we can cut him a little slack for a while. Tinordi's pace on assists is better than last season and his plus/minus is way up, but his team so far is doing a lot better than they did over last season, so it's hard for a statistical kibitzer to come to conclusions, without knowing whether Tinordi is at least partly responsible for his team's better performance. Can anyone who actually watches the London Knights comment? Note habsprospects.hockeyhq.net

The Blades are playing in Red Deer on Saturday night, so I may pop down to catch the game. They place twice in Edmonton against the Oil Kings, but not for a little while yet. I will definitely be aiming to be at both those games, as well as Gallagher's one visit here this season.

Our Team Canada wannabees all helped their causes tonight.
Bournival was back in just his second game since mid October and netted two goals tonight including the game winner. He now has 12 goals in 10 games. Gotta get back on that radar screen after missing just over two months of hockey.
Gallagher had his third straight multi point game tonight with one goal and three assists. 19 goals in 19 games.
Beaulieu now has a six game point streak going with an assist tonight, and has 20 points and is +15 in 22 games so far this season.

So, you wonder, who is off to a great start this weekend?
Dan the Man Kristo...his speed and skill were a flourish tonight in a huge 7-6 win over Colorado College (a perennial contender too). 2+1 and the GWG, and some very fine plays. Watched all the highlights, he was flying!!
Keeping it south of the border, the big lad from Colorado. Steve Qualier had one goal (his fourth) and two assists. The big lug missed a season with injury, so who knows if he is just another Wyman or something more promising.
My third star-ish goes to Nathan Beaulieu with his 7th of the season. This kid oozes talent but still is very young in so many ways. Hope my fellow Habs fans allow him to develop over time...he will need it, but watch out, this kid has some real game!

Three players invited to the Canadian WJC camp:
Beaulieu, Bournival, and Gallagher.

Unless they crash, Gallagher and Beaulieu should make it. I think Bournival would be excellent on their shut down line and PK, but he probably faces the biggest challenge.

Agreed 17. Gallager and Beaulieu should be locks. There are only 3 returning players, and one is a goalie, so anything is possible if Bournival has a good camp.

I may be a slightly dissenting vote, but I think Gallagher is a lock, Bournival has a good chance based on his performance last season (the last cut) and a good start to his season despite his injury, and Beaulieu is in a dog fight for a spot with some equally good defensemen. p.s. Gallagher snapped his five game scoreless drought tonight with a hat trick in a losing cause. I watched one of those five games on TV and he was pretty good, despite going scoreless. He was one pass or a play away several times from another good night on the scoresheet. He actually drew two penalties with his hustle and constantly got over-teamed due to opposition focus on him....none of which shows up on scoresheets. p.p.s. I have three tickets to Team Canada games (Gallagher/Bournival/Beaulieu?), two for Team USA (Tinordi?) and two for Team Czech (Pribyl?), so I am hoping all kids make their respective teams for really selfish reasons.

Had a chance to watch a webcast of the U ofNorth Dakota - U of Alaska Anchorage NCAA game last night and watch Danny Kristo and Mark MacMillan in action.
Kristo ended the night with two points, with a goal (his 8th) and an assist. He and his line were good all night. His helper was on the PP, and he used his speed and skill to gain the zone and head along the boards to right of the net, where he dished it back to the D and they proceeded to pass and shoot for the PP marker. His goal was a highlight reel goal, and he crossed the blueline with speed, went outside the D on his backhand, blew by the guy and did a quick switch to the forehand and quick snapper top shelf once he was in alone on the goalie. It was a good one.
MacMillan was held pointless, but had a decent game for a freshman. He did get an assist the night before, but I do like his game. His skating has improved and he was quite good on the faceoffs. Like Kristo, he was used on both the PP and PK, although less so than Kristo. The coaches seem to have confidence in the kid.
Will be off to Rexall tonight to get my first live look at Darren Dietz of the Saskatoon Blades. He has been having a good season so far, so looking forward to seeing how has has progressed since getting drafted by the Habs.

Ouch, just looked at the box score. Seemed to be an even game until Trask got the 5 minute major and then 3 PP goals later, it's 6-2 and gonzo. Oh well, we can still ask how Dietz played. Thanks NWT.

Ouch, just looked at the box score. Seemed to be an even game until Trask got the 5 minute major and then 3 PP goals later, it's 6-2 and gonzo. Oh well, we can still ask how Dietz played. Thanks NWT. It was a very entertaining game. It was the third game in three nights for Saskatoon, so I expected they would be a little woozy. They had driven up from Lethbridge after the game Saturday night, so not sure how much sleep you get on a bus until 5:00 am. Dietz (who wears one of the "A's" as an 18 year old) started the game on the right side with team captain and first rounder Duncan Siemens. Dietz also has the honour of being the Habs' youngest prospect, as he won't turn 19 until next July. He is listed as 6'1" and 195 lbs, so a pretty solid frame for a young kid, which bodes well. When you see him side by side with Siemens, he is a few inches shorter but he looks a lot more solid. As for his game, it was a really balanced and solid effort overall, despite being on the wrong end of a 8-3 score. The Oil Kings scoring three times on that five minute major blew the game wide open, but they did end up with 5 PP goals last night. Dietz played a number of shifts paired with Siemens and the coach also interchanged his top four defense a fair bit, so Dietz did have some other pairing every other shift or so. He was on the second PP pairing, but switched over to the left side so he had a better shooting angle as a right hander. He also had regular PK time, and that was half the game for the Blades!! He ended up with an assist on the Blades' PP goal, with a nice second assist from the point. He also ended up the game -1, and at first I could not remember him being on the ice for a 5 on 5 goal...and he wasn't. He was on for the Oil Kings shortie in the third period, where the Blades lost the puck in their zone while on the PP, and the Kings blasted another one home. He did not factor into the play at all. He skates well for a big kid, and I like his smooth, strong stride. He used it to jump up in the play a few times, and rarely gets caught out. He pinched once with four minutes left in a blowout, and almost caught up with the smaller, speedier Oil King. It did not result in a goal. He makes a really good and consistent first pass, hard and on the tape for the most part. He is decent with the puck, and had a few good wrist shots during the PPs. Low and accurate. I did not see him slap the puck at all, so no idea what velocity he can get on his shot. He is a decent body checker, and twice checked an Oil King to the ice, so they were not just passing glances. I saw him in March and really did not notice him game much as I was much more focussed on Siemens at the time (as was Timmins and two other Montreal scouts at the game). I guess they were also paying more attention to Dietz than I first imagined. I think Dietz is a solid prospect for his age, and he seems to do a lot of little things well, but does not blow you away with anything that really sets him apart. His stock has jumped amongst WHL watchers since training camp, so it will be interesting to see how he does over the next two seasons before the Habs have to make a decision about a contract. As it stands now, this kid is heading in the right direction.

I think there is a reasonable prospect that by the time he is 22 or so, Dietz will be playing at 210-215 pounds. That should be adequate.

Hmmm not trying to be the party pooper, but when the video first starts I thought "what are they skating in mud or is this in slow mo?" so it didn't surprise me to go around a d-man that was almost standing still, maybe it was the end of a shift, or is this level of hockey usually that poor. Again I got that from a 30 second video clip, nobody was moving.

I've seen Kristo in the WJC, where the speed is as good as it gets in Juniour hockey. He was one of the faster skaters there. The wheels on that kid are just fine. Nice hands too, as I thought he was going to backhand it at first, but he managed to switch it over to the forehand and (yes!) put it upstairs where all the good angels go. I hate it when players don't shoot above the goal pads.

Prospect on national TV alert!!
Brendan Gallagher and his Vancouver Giants are on Sportnsnet tomorrow night as part of their Friday night CHL coverage. Game time is 7:00 pm PT (nice and late for all you eastern boys and girls) and it is on Sportsnet One and West I believe. As "they" say, check your local listings.
Team Canada's WJC camp starts in Calgary the next day, and Brendan is playing this game and then heading to camp right away.
I am getting pretty pumped about the fast approaching WJC as that hockey is great hockey to watch. I will be at five of the round robin games in Edmonton and Team Canada's pre-tourney game against Sweden.
If all goes well and all the kids make the team, I will see multiple games with Beaulieu, Gallagher, Bournival, Tinordi and Pribyl live later this month...including that ever popular New Year's Eve CAN-USA classic.
This will be the best cure from having watched too many JM-inspired Habs' games leading up to the tournament!!
