i just don't think the Habs' prospects look that good this year. oops, wrong thread . . . this should be in the prediction thread. as to our AHLers and up-and-comers . . . I'm going to change my handle to "whatever", because no matter how well the boys do in the A-and-under, with the exception of Subban [I'm just waiting for his turn] they just seem to flounder [or get traded and become alive] but thanks for the updates, NWT . . . I'm just not paying as much attention to much Hab-wise so far [maybe when the season begins . . . heck, I'm paying more attention to the NFL than the NHL -- and I detest the NFL game!]. Prediction: As the year goes on we will be less interested in Gomez and his non-scoring streak, Markov and his non-playing streak, Molson and his non-action streak and JM and his non-expression streak. We will turn to the prospects like a man paying alimony turns to lotto tickets. Does anybody really think that this team with Markov back on one knee, Gomez contributing 6 more goals in the second half and Molson firing another special teams coach will challenge for the cup? JM would be a better Royal Guard than a coach. At least they change once a day.

Gallagher on the tube tonight. Sportsnet One, West and Pacific.
He joins the World Junior camp tomorrow. A busy stretch ahead for our young man.

Ended with 2 points, adding an assist on the empty netter in a 5-3 win.

A couple of our NCAA prospects are on TV tonight if you have the Big Ten Network. It is a battle of the state of Michigan as the Woverines of UofM take on Michigan State tonight. Game time is 6:30 eastern.
Big Greg Pateryn is a stay at home defenseman and wears #2.
Mac Bennett is a very good skating offensive defender and dons #37.
They are often paired together.

From Canada jr camp: The following players are healthy scratches, which means they have almost certainly made the team: Brandon Gormley, Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Murray, Brendan Gallagher, Freddie Hamilton, Mark Scheifele, Devante Smith-Pelly and Mark Stone. Nathan Beaulieu is playing in game vs CIS All-stars, wouldn't it be great to have 2 Habs on Team Canada. As long as it isn't a repeat of 7ish years ago when Chipchura was captain and Latendress played 1-2 shifts per game and Price was cut because he didn't show up at an optional practice.

There's an excellent chance at least two will be there. Beaulieu had an excellent game Tuesday. One goal, one assist and some very composed, solid play. He was standing inside the opposition blue line, took a pass from the other side, and made an inside out move to fool the defender coming at him and then sped past him and made a good pass. That showed tremendous confidence, skill and a high panic threshhold. His goal was a one timer bullet over the goalie's shoulder from a steep angle. Can't keep him off the team.
Bournival has a chance. Bob McKenzie classifies him as an industrious player along with a couple of other centres, supposedly without the skill of Strome or Schifele. But Strome hasn't shown much in this camp, though he may make it on his season play and upside. That still leaves Bournival a crack at the last 2 centre spots, and he scored in the game as well. I'm hopeful. (Fingers crossed). Gallagher and Beaulieu are locks IMO.

So all three Hab prospects made the team. Should be an enjoyable WJC.

Bournival, Gallagher and Beaulieau on Team Canada at the WJC - going to be an interesting tourney to be sure (though do we know if Bournival will be a regular or a bench warmer?)

Also, Tinordi is still on the US team. They make their final cut on Dec. 22nd.

That's great, like I said previously now way would Hay have cut his own star player, he is too darned good to not make that team. Beaulieau is also one of the best skating/rushing d-man in junior hockey, glad Bournival made it as well, him I wasn't sure about. I haven't watched the world juniors as much the last couple of seasons, but this year I'll be glued, might help my hockey fantasy pool future drafts as well. I could use that

The TSN guys said that Beaulieu had a stellar camp. Great shot, confident puck mover.

That play I described above takes nerves of steel. It's the kind of play that JM would bench the kid for, no questions asked. Extremely high risk, but awesome. I love the fact he tried it and completed it, in a key situation, trying to make the team. It's the same type of play JM benched Eller for earlier this year. Can I hate a coach more? Maybe not. JM will never win anything again. To achieve anything, you have to take risks, calculated ones yes, but risks nonetheless. No one has won anything playing it safe. You can survive playing it safe, but you will never achieve greatness. Martin, the survivor, not the achiever.

I was interested to see Gallagher described in this article as weighing 178 pounds. Habsprospects lists him as 174 pounds, which I suppose might be based on last June. I hopes he keeps on adding muscle for a while.

I hopes he keeps on adding muscle for a while. Hockey Canada lists him at 178 on their WJC roster, to is is likely the most recent and accurate reading. He plays such an aggressive style that he is going to need that muscle going forward for sure. Having a dad as a strength and conditioning coach is probably never a bad thing, as I have read he takes his off season and off ice workout as seriously as he takes his approach to games.

Gallagher will wear #12 for Canada at the WJCs. I seem to recal another small guy who wore #12 who was a pretty special player.

Only sure thing is, "All roster stats are inflated." They list height wearing skates and weight in full uniforms with pucks in the players pockets. All teams do it.

The closest comparison I can come to with Gallagher is Gionta. Gallagher is not as good a skater, but he has better hands and is a more natural scorer. Neither is afraid of the dirty areas. Smaller guys like Gallagher have to have a certain amount of strength, but it's not the key component. Quickness, speed and the ability to lose your check and find open ice are more important.
I'm really, really pleased that there are 3 Habs prospects on the Canadian team. We've had PK and Price and Leblanc, but they weren't together on the same team (unless PK and Carey were on the shootout win team together). But to have 3, all playing for Canada, is awesome. It's hard to cheer for your prospects when they're playing for the US (Kristo, McDonagh) against Canada. No conflicts this year ;D.

Here is the list since that Dream Team in 2005: 2005 - no Hab draft picks (Belle was on the team who was later acquired) 2006 - Chipchura and Latendresse (Blunden, Boyd, Pouliot and Pyatt were all on the team, but were acquired afterwards) 2007 - Price (Pyatt) 2008 - Subban 2009 - Subban 2010 - nada 2011 - Leblanc Of course we have had years with numerous prospects on the various teams. More on that later.

If you want to see some of Canada's pre-tournament games and get a little glimpse of Beaulieu, Gallagher and Bournival, then you can tune in for three games this week in anticipation of the Boxing Day kick-off.
Canada - Finland is on tonight on TSN2;
Canada - Switzerland is on Thursday night on TSN2; and
Canada - Sweden is on Friday night on TSN (yours truly will be at the game wearing a Team Canada jersey, you won't be able to miss me!!).

In order to stand out, may I suggest you wear an Oilers jersey if the game is in Calgary and a Flames jersey if its in Edmonton.

Morgan Ellis, captain of Cape Breton, has been traded to Shawinigan. He will join fellow prospect Michael Bournival and also get a berth in the Memorial Cup as his new team will be the hosts in May. He is a solid, character guy who plays a nice two way game. He did play in one of the QMJHL-Russia games this fall, so he got a little more recognition and exposure. He is amongst a large group of prospects who should be signing their first pro contract befo the summer. Quite the flood of young kids heading to Hamilton next fall.

Morgan Ellis likes his new team. He now has two goals and three assists in his first two games, and he is a defenseman! Bournival will be back with the team now too, so they will be poised for a good run into the Memorial Cup.

Beaulieu had a good return with two assists tonight, but that pales by comparison to Gallagher who has six points (3+3) tonight. Game is still going!
Edit: he just got his 7 th point on an assist on a shortie with less than two to go.
