The QMJHL is stacked this year so important draft for Habs. Who are likely some candidates for our first round pick? Fred Gauthier...the 6'5 center, PPG this year and already NHL ready defensively. Came out of nowhere, rumoured a Bergeron type. Zykov the power forward Russian...34 goals so far this year still 17. Anthony Mantha...been heavily watched all year, picking it up as of late. Outside the Q...Ryan Hartman the TPG hero, compared to Marchand. Max Domi...Tie son's? Robert Hagg the WJC star from Sweden? Wennberg, another Swede, small but slick player?

This year's crop is looking to be the most hyped since 2003, and with reason. Most of the names you mentioned are quite interesting prospects. I was ok with the Habs sucking another year, simply because this year's draft is very interesting, even deep into the second round. Another plus is that the Habs currently have 4 picks in the top 60. Veeery niiiice.

I wouldn't mind Max Domi. For several reasons, even though he's not big.
a) How many teams would have two Max's on them? b) The puck follows him around. c) it would really, really, tick off Leafs fans.
Considering his size and the depth of prospects, he may easily fall well into the 2nd round.

Max's numbers have gone up nicely in his draft year. Don't know a lot about him though, other than the pedigree.

I did not rank the reasons in order of importance. Should that be a)?

You shouldn't draft just for size, and especially not if you're drafting size because you're current NHL team is small, because who knows what your team will look like in 3-5 years when these guys start breaking in. But man oh man, are there some big boys available this year! Some likely and/or possible first rounders, or early second rounders:
Seth Jones, 6'4, 215lbs, defense, son of a former NBA player
Alexander Barkov, 6'3, 215lbs, center. Boy has shoulders wider than a bus.
Valeri Nichuskin, 6'4, 215lbs, LW
Darnell Nurse, 6'4, 205lbs, defense, nephew of Donavan McNab
Nikita Zadorov, 6'5, 230llbs, defense
Rasmus Ristolainen, 6'3, 205lbs, defense
Frederik Gauthier, 6'5, 215 lbs, center
Mirco Mueller, 6'4, 200lbs, defense
Mike McCarron, 6'5, 225lbs, RW
Samuel Morin, 6'7, 210lbs, defense
Jonathon Diaby, 6'5, 230lbs, defense
If we could walk out of there with two, or even three of those guys, and they all pan out within three years... whoo boy!

As it is right now we draft like 25th. Have a sneaky feeling we will draft Gauthier. Not that I like him...think he is 3rd line material at best. But given his size, from the Q, and he is defensively ready, strong chance to be our 1st round pick. In the second round, Diaby the Habs like, Subban they should like for obvious reasons.

I would be all over Nichushkin if somehow he's available when we speak. I doubt he will be though, "Russian factor" or not.

Not saying Nich will be on the board but somebody we totally don't expect will be there.

What is happening with Drouin and Mackinnon? Both still injured missing games?

Mac's been out a month now. He appears to be on the mend, but no timetable. Drouin went out before their home game Friday night - which I attended. Mooseheads gutted out a 3-1 win in a game where they weren't the better team in many respects. Badly out shot. Some hard workers in the lineup - Ashley in particular - but there aren't many goals with the two best players in the Q missing from the lineup.
I'm telling you right now, you don't want to be picking Fucale. Everything is an adventure. He can, and does, make spectacular saves. His rebound control is not good. He whiffs at, and fumbles and bumbles, routine stuff making it look hard. Doesn't instill much confidence in me.

So long as we don't swing for the fences and end up not even getting out of the infield. I don't go back into previous draft years unless I'm looking for information. It really gets discouraging seeing how we missed out on some established names.
I don't think we're seeing that now, though. There's a very respected organization in Montreal once again.
Cheers.

It's kind of abstract, but when I'm watching a goalie I compare him to the one at the other end. I also take into consideration the notion that the shots he's facing are not of the quality he'd face at the pro level in most cases. There were instances Friday where Fucale was unable to catch a basic shot with his glove, and botched a floater to the body. Both fell to the ice and resulted in scramble plays around the crease. I think his stats and his rating for the upcoming draft are inflated because of MacKinnon and Drouin.

Drouin steals Q awards show The Halifax Mooseheads winger was named the league’s most valuable player, top pro prospect, personality/ambassador of the year and a first-team all-star. “Obviously we’re excited and happy for him,” said Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell. “It’s been a dream season for him — making the world junior team and coming that close to winning the scoring race in just 49 games — it’s a special season. The nice thing is that you know even though he’s won these awards, he just wants to win the big one. He wants a championship more than anything.” Drouin finished runner-up to P.E.I. Rocket forward Ben Duffy in the league scoring race, finishing with 105 points. Duffy posted 110 points in 68 games, 19 more than Drouin. The Mooseheads picked Drouin second overall in the 2011 QMJHL draft but he didn’t report to the team until December of that year. After taking a few months to find his comfort level, he took off in last year’s playoffs with 26 points in 17 games to put him sixth in the scoring race despite his team being eliminated in the third round. He followed up that breakout performance by taking his play to a whole other level this season. “We loved him when we scouted him and drafted him but I don’t think anybody would honestly say they expected him to accomplish what he’s accomplished this quickly,” Russell said. “It’s been a great surprise for everyone.” Other Mooseheads award winners were: Dominique Ducharme (coach of the year) and defenceman Konrad Abelthshauser (humanitarian and community involvement). Ducharme tied the league record for wins in a season (58) and set numerous franchise marks. Abeltshauser has always been heavily involved with charities and community events around Halifax. “It’s great,” Russell said. “These players often get recognized for what they do on the ice. But when you’re talking about Konrad Abeltshauser, you’re talking about a player that’s going to go on and play in the NHL so he’s obviously a great hockey player, but he’s an even better human being. He’s just a fantastic kid, a caring kid and a giving kid. He’s liked and respected by everyone in the dressing room so it’s nice to see him win an award like that. He’s more than deserving of it.” Mooseheads goalie Zachary Fucale made the first all-star team, Abeltshauser and centre Nathan MacKinnon were named to the second all-star team and defenceman MacKenzie Weegar made the rookie all-star team. “When Nate and Jo and Marty (Frk) were gone to world juniors, and Konrad broke his wrist and missed eight or 10 games, we got to see that we have that depth,” Russell said. “All the players showed it all season that they’re capable of stepping up when we need them. That’s what you need if you want to go deep in the playoffs.” Russell was a finalist for the GM of the year award, but that honour went to Philippe Boucher of the Rimouski Oceanic. Bathurst Titan forward Zach O’Brien was the most sportsmanlike player, Kevin Gagne of the Rimouski Oceanic was the top defenceman, Baie-Comeau Drakkar forward Valentin Zykov was the rookie of the year and defenceman Charles-David Beaudoin of the Drummondville Voltigeurs was the scholastic player of the year.

I'm always interested in the draft. It's where the Habs team starts and the better we can pick the more years we'll have like this one and fewer like the last. I still cringe thinking of last year.

This draft has 4 superstars, six more very good prospects and the rest are like any other year. By the time Timmins name is called we will be like the guest at "Honey-Boo-Boos" dining table picking scraps. (I hope we pick 30th or later). We don't have holes to fill where whoever we draft will move ahead of the boys already on the farm. We are stocking up on voids to fill in 2016. I would love Mackinnon, Drouin, Jones or Nickoushkin but unless we can package four of our picks to get into the top 4 there won't be a superstar available. Timmins can't turn Oprah Winfrey into Halle Berry.

Keeping in mind that any club outside the playoffs now has a shot at the first overall pick, the coup would be to swing a deal to get into the lottery.

Problem is, the lottery takes place right after the regular season, I think on April, 29th. Therefore you won't find a partner for this dance.

Put a package together for a run at McDavid next year. Give away this yearss picks for some weaker teams #1 next year. It's hard for a GM to let his fans down by trading away his #1 before the draft, but improving his team and getting multiple picks for the #1 down the road in 2014 is more likely, especially if the GM is panicking the way Gainey did in his last year.

He might have been able to go in early for the OHL draft with the "exceptional status" exemption, however, that doesn't work for the NHL draft. You're going to have to wait until 2015 for McDavid.

Well, we now know we will have five picks in the top 71 picks. Our NSH second rounder will be 34, our CAL second rounder will be 36 and our DAL third rounder will be 71 once they dish out a compensatory pick. With all seven rounds being done on the same day this year, TT will be very busy between picks 27 and 36 with three picks.
Our picks will be late in each round, depending on what happens in the playoffs as that will impact final seeding. As it stands now, we will be around the 27th pick each round.
The Canada US gold medal game yesterday at the U-18s sure was a nice showcase of some of the talent in this draft. Pretty gutsy performance by the Canadians to stop the US streak at four championships in this tourney.

Phillipe Desroisiers, the goaltender, looked composed and solid. And yes, weren't there a lot of 2013 draft eligible players on those teams, and that was just two of the teams.
