...some noise about Moulson/Ott for Brière/Diaz/2nd
My opinion, I've been hearing about Briere to Buffalo for some time, lots of diffenrent scenarios... I think buffalo is motivated about getting Briere but I think Bergevin is going to flubbed this by taking his sweet time and asking for the world in return of a player he has no use of anyways...
Just a gutt feeling.

I know they are just rumours, but it's a pipe dream if you ask me to shed Briere's contract and get something in return, let alone something good.
As for Moulson, I'd love to get him, but Bergevin doesn't like rentals. Although he did bring on Ryder knowing he wouldn't resign him. So maybe he'd do the same with Moulson. Got to think Montreal would eat some of Briere's contract too.

Doc maybe right with little ammo everything points to and has been rumoured MB looking for a homerun...who can blame him with the mistakes he has made and the lack of a decent trade.
I discount the Cole deal because he f'd it up with the Briere signing.
Not sure what happened to the baby steps...but IMO that has been complicated by his hiring of MT who keeps leaning on our burnt out vets.....if you can get anything that gives you effective size take it. IMO we have a horrible 3rd/4th lines Ott would upgrade it greatly and gives you options even by teaming him and Prust and Eller on a big hard to play with 3rd line.

Briere is waiver material at this point. Just taking his contract is compensation enough, but if he can be packaged along with some other pieces then great.
Briere does make some sense for Buffalo. They are tanking this year but have a ton of free agents and need some decent players next year to fill out the roster and Briere is a known commodity in Buffalo and liked by the fans. Adding Briere along with McDavid, will give Sabres fans a reason to come to the games. Berg knows that Briere by himself is worthless and pending UFAs like Ott and Moulson are of no use to Buffalo, so it could be Buffalo that is trying to fleece Bergevin, who is desperate at this point to dump Briere. Still a deal makes sense for both sides. I'm sure Briere would waive his NTC, if he has one, to get the heck out of Montreal even if its to go to the worst team in the league. What a disaster that signing has been.

While it's rare to happen, he could boost the payroll of a team trying to meet the cap floor. capgeek.com/payrolls/?charts_year=2014The Sabres have the least amount of money committed to players for next year. They've got Grigorenko, Zadorov (with an absolute cannon and all around ability), Girgensons, etc. Tanking this year, and next, by playing the kids and keeping payroll as low as possible nets them a great shot at Reinhart this year and McDavid next. Or, if they wanted a young guy to pair with Myers for the future Ekblad is impressing everyone at the WJC. There's no point in waiving Briere at this point, except to clear a spot. He was 35 when he signed his deal, so regardless of roster standing or buyout he counts for the full amount. That in itself could be a selling point to a cap floor team. Briere plus cash goes one way. The Sabres absorb the full cap hit, but only pay part of the salary (which is now allowed under the current CBA if I'm not mistaken).

Briere has a NMC, meaning he can't be waived. He has to agree to a trade to any team, but he already said he would waive it to go to Buffalo. Although there has been no official demand from management to do so. I think what's keeping MB from pulling the trigger is that Buffalo does not want Briere straight up for any player. Rumor has it that the offer was Ott for Briere and a second round. MB might not want to give up a second round pick for a rental third liner. I also heard that the initial deal was for stafford, who also has a $4M cap hit and also ends next year, but he is a big bodied third line RW. We would get want we want and Buffalo would get the experience and leadership they want. Problem is that Stafford just got injured. Now MB is hesitant. Time will tell, but I'm sure something will happen, if not before the Olympics, before trade deadline.
We have to keep in mind that TSN will need something for tradecenter, being that they lost the contract.

I just saw this on TSN trade rumour
How interested would we be in either Buff or Kane?
Kane with the Gals would be interesting or Kane with Patches/DD (could be Patches/DD/Cole reincarnated)
lol... Buff and Murray as the third pair D... what a pair of battleships.

I think they'd demand Patches going the other way. I don't have a lot of interest in Byfuglien. He's a huge liability defensively.
IMO, what the Jets need is defensively responsible/aware players.

Expensive, sure, and it would deplete existing assets, but how can you not even ask about something like this? Winnipeg seems to want to go in a different direction, and I think Bergevin has the horses to make that happen. Aside: Every time I've seen Buff's face on the tube recently he's looked like he's had the life sucked out of him. Kane is a bit immature, but hopefully we have the leadership in the dressing room to address that. Hope Fourthperiod.com has some legit sources for this one. Cheers.

Berg was in Chicago when Buf was there. He'd know exactly what he'd be getting into.

If you read the article on the US Olympic team selection process, the management team was frankly quite scared of Byfuglien's 'risk'. I think they believed he'd cost too much in goals against than he'd contribute in goals for. Understandable.

Honestly couldn't tell you one way or the other, but I'll bet his -17 might be a reflection of his attitude. And if it is his attitude, is it a symptom of his working environment. Is he tired of losing? Saw his reaction to his coach being fired. He really did look like he could've cared less. Now, that's not to say that maybe he's given up for no reason at all. And if that's the case he becomes an even bigger liability. He and Kane would make a difference in Montreal, though. Even if it only gave Bergevin time to develop the size coming up over the next few years. Cheers.

Want to see a proactive GM, just look at Sens GM Bryan Murray. He's even told the media that he's now ready to move some of his more desirable younger assets.
TSN suggested that this philosophy puts Ottawa ahead of Toronto and Montreal, as far as being proactive. They went onto suggest that Murray feels his club might be ready to take a run at the Cup.
Funny, eh? I think we're a better team with better prospects. But, my hat goes off to Murray.
Chapeau!

Beat me to it WD. TSN cites Randy Miller's article, where he suggests a return could be Anton Volchenkov. AV is signed through the 2015-16 season at $4.25 million per season. Anton's play has really nose-dived since his early years in Ottawa. He's still a physical presence though. Given what's available on the UFA market, it might be the best you could hope for. Given his drop in play, and the extra year, I'd likely ask for a conditional pick (at least) as well. www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=441149

The extra year for me is the deal-breaker. If it was only for the rest of this season and next year then I would consider it. And even then only if there is another trade to move out another defenseman for a forward or two, like Diaz or something. I like the idea of having Volchenkov for playoff-depth purposes, and I think that he could be an effective replacement for Bouillon and Murray next year in that 7th defenseman spot (albeit at three times the price), but that 2015-16 season is a killer for me. MAYBE if the Devils were to take on some salary for that season, but even then. Granted, there is something to be said for worrying about tomorrow when tomorrow comes, but still, I'm not sure Volchenkov is the guy that makes enough of a difference to warrant the headache that extra year could potentially bring. I'm pretty sure we could find a similar depth defenseman who is only signed for one more year, if not a pending UFA, so it's not like we have to target Volchenkov specifically. And unlike most I'm not all that concerned about the Briere contract, so dumping it for a similar if not worse one is really not anything I would leap at doing.
A more "even" deal in that respect would be Volchenkov for Bourque, if we're talking about matching contract lengths.

I think we are fine at center. Power winger? Do you mean Pacioretty? Cause he is far from elite. He has 19 goals, but only 27 points ... if I were to say Ryder has 16 goals and 24 points, it kinda puts that in perspective doesn't it?

I'd trade Briere for Volchenkov ... where we are saddled with Briere's contract next year or Volchenkov's , I dont think it matters. Briere's is the one that would be harder to move, IMO.
Volchenkov has 6 points, 77 hits, 62 blocked shots, and is +3 ..... Lars Eller is our leading hitter with 82 (albeit Emelin has 80 in 25 games, and Douglas Murray has 75 in 26 games). PK Subban has 78 and Gorges has 62. That's our top five.
PK Subban, Josh Gorges and Nathan Beaulieu are the only defense this year that have a positive +/- ....
Volchenkov has value to the Habs, I would think

However, while driving back to K-town, "Simmmer's" guest mentioned that Eugene Melnyk mentioned that while he figures he needs two (or more) pieces to become a legit contender, he wasn't willing to max out his salary cap to do it. Bryan Murray has been working with a budget that's approximately $10 million under the cap (that's what it was last year, anyway) and he hasn't been given the green light by Melnyk to spend more. You know what, though Willy, I like Bryan Murray's approach to the game. He's an acknowledged hockey man in the NHL circles and I think he's done a great job with Ottawa. He got lucky in two things; Craig Anderson playing way over his head, and he found a coach who can get the most out of his players. Will be interesting to see how he backs up his statement, anyway. Cheers.
