OK I like this Scherbak kid. Duthie speaking to him. English is good. Asking him if he'd ever watched TSN. Scherbak saying US football, hockey etc. Duthie asks if he'd watched any curling with Vic Rauter. "Curling? It's my favorite sport!" Left Duthie speechless lol.

Bergevin on 690 tonight. Says he had deal on table to trade down if Scherbak was off the board.

Quite the character, this kid. Good interviews.
We may have a darn good one considering where we were picking in a "weak" draft.

The kid has a sense of humour he likes to laugh ... so does Bergevin (just sayin') ... he's confident and I hadn't realized where he was ranked before Montreal took him ... Duthie just complimented him on his personality ... lead all rookies in scoring with 78 points ... sounds like we picked up a good one ... some interesting material on him here.Cheers.

Ehlers was also a rookie this year. Scored more than 100 points.

Not raining on a parade, but he was older than most rookies. Overall a very good pick at 26 in a weak draft. That may well be true, but he faced a lot more obstacles than many of them. First year in a new country, new language, culture. It's a huge adjustment for these kids, and he seems to have not only handled it well, but embraced it. If first impressions are worth anything, the comparison to Akost ends with the interview with Duthie.

Scherbak said in an interview he was now 6'2" and 190 lbs - good, besides being a growing boy the kid already appears to understand the importance of size and strength for playing in the NHL.
Prospect with size and a good skill level, can't complain.

The Duthie interview is on youtube for those curious. He's got a great sense of humour.

Even from a stats department, he looks pretty good. The Blades had a horrible year and were -110 in goal differential as a team. While some of that differential would be in PP goals against, Scherbak's =/- of -6 for a rookie on such a bad team, is pretty darn good, not to mention that he was the leading scorer by such a large margin. Part of the reason for that is that a couple of good scorers were traded during the season, but he still had the best PPG average, even including those guys. This is looking more and more like quite an intriguing pick. Here are some highlights. The kid knows how to pass and he's definitely not a smurf.

I'll reserve judgement until I see him in a Hab's sweater.....on the ice....in a game.
I remember the hope and dream investment I had the day we drafted Komisarek. A right defenseman who was going to bring a nasty, hard nosed game, no prisoners, "make them bleed and then kick them again" game that paralleled my imagination of what I would be if I could. Crankysaurus writ large. Heck, I'm not kidding if I said he he even looked a bit like me. How did that turn out?
So now, drafting and hoping.....and not much else.

I have a good feeling about this kid. He may not work out but he may also be a top 6 guy if not top winger. Not bad for 26th overall. Sure beats Chouinard and Leblanc. Never felt good about those guys. In a few years this guy may be the perfect winger for AGal. Question is what happens first: this guy making the starting line up or AGal finally getting to play centre.
So many teams avoiding Russians due to the KHL. But here's a guy who went to Sask so he could fulfill his NHL dream. Sask! Did you hear me? Sask! And his english is already way ahead of Markov's. His french way ahead of Saku's. His IQ way ahead of AKost. All faint praise, but tremendous upside.
Me likes!

I was telling Mrs NWT and our draft party buddy that I hoped he would come to Montreal soon to teach Markov more English.

More speed and a higher sense to shoot?

First thing I thought when he got on the stage was "he's bigger than 6'1". I don't know about 190, but he should have pretty good size when all is said and done. Hard to believe that the Russian factor would cause him to fall that far, given his personality, stats and projectible size.

Hard to believe that the Russian factor would cause him to fall that far, given his personality, stats and projectible size. Russian factor played a role why he still there at 26, but not worried about it. Watching his interviews Scherbak's demeanor and attitude seemed humble. He says things like "worked hard as wanted to go first round". "Wants to play in NHL as best league in world". Think Russian factor overblown here. This could be a McDonagh or Giroux type pick for Timmins. I noticed him at Top Prospects Game and kept an eye on him ever since. Skates similar to Galchenyuk, likely many years they be playing on same line together. What I find interesting is first year in CHL, on terrible team, had 34 more points then the second leading scorer on the team. Then he ends up being over a PPG player. Just seeing this kind of progress makes me think he hasn't reached his ceiling yet. I think he is a Kyle Okposo/Voracek type player, with upside to be a Hossa.

Very good looking pick. He really does skate a lot like Galchenyuk. He's got a nose for the net and I hope that offensive drive is not stifled out of him so he plays a 2 way game. Him and AGal would look really good together
