Kings get futures which could be as much as a 5th round pick if Gilbert plays in 50% of games or the Caps reach a specific round in playoffs. If conditions aren't met, Kings get nothing.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet...but, considering Detroit's position, would Vanek be worth another try for a deadline pickup?
Or has that ship passed....

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet...but, considering Detroit's position, would Vanek be worth another try for a deadline pickup? Or has that ship passed.... I dare say it has. He's quietly had a nice season in Detroit. I thought part of his overall lack of success here was usage. I think he could be used by Therrien much like Eriksson was in Boston. Would I call Detroit? Yes. I don't think Bergevin does though,

Vanek is having good season on a bad team.
He was productive though not great in Montreal and I never really understood why Therrien sees an established skill guy and opts not to provide stable line mates to develop timing and continuity to settle in with new club. Bergevin was, however, right not to sign him for the money Minnesota offered.
I agree that it is unlikely Bergevin and Julien would have much interest. Habs biggest need is down the middle, though goals are not exactly plentiful so it would not be irrational to pick up top six wing if the price is right. For me the price cannot be a second round pick for 33 year old rental when Montreal is only fifth or sixth best team in East.

Lots of ex-Habs connection in that trade. Still surprised that Danny Kristo is 26 and has yet to suit up in an NHL game. He has bounced around a few organizations. Carolina is as likely as good a shot as he will ever get, although some guys just never develop past a certain level. On the other hand, pretty cool to see Hainsey still hanging around and getting some decent return for his team. Atta boy, Hollywood!! 891 games and counting.

Not sure if it is worthy of a new thread but what are some players that are reportedly available that you wish MB went after (assuming the price is reasonable). I've been going back and forth over Iginla. It is obvious he has lost a step, but he is a big body that could fill in on the second or third line. I was going to suggest Hainsey before the trade went down, for some more puck movement. I just hope it isn't more bottom 6 depth (upfront) we get.

The only way I see Berg going after bottom six depth is to improve our face off %. Maybe a guy like Brian Boyle. Otherwise, I believe he's looking at adding skill and goals. I think he's still focused on the likes of Duchene, and likely circling the wagons periodically. I'd consider Vanek, but he likely won't. Players to consider: - Jeff Skinner - 25 years old, within reach of another 30 goal season. Can play either wing. Two years left on his deal at $5.725 million. His NMC kicks in next year. If Carolina is serious about a rebuild, now would be time to move him.
- Patrick Sharp - veteran player with rings and experience. Injuries hampered start to his year. Had a great January. Has cooled off in February as the Stars are abysmal.
- Brian Boyle - size quotient, physical, strong defensively, very good in face offs.
Not interested in Iggy. He's lost more than a step. Seven goals and 16 points in 58 games and a -20. Given that the coming draft has been downgraded from weak to downright awful, I'm not concerned about moving our first or one of our seconds. Prices are so ridiculously high though. I mean, Hanzal has attracted all this attention and he's got 15 goals to go with a -15 in 49 games. He's never produced offensively. He's never been a defensive dynamo. He's had significant issues playing a whole season, and is not a physical presence despite being 6'6 and 230lbs. Despite all of this, the asking price is a first and a quality prospect? I don't think so. When Vermette went to Chicago, he went for 2 seconds. He was at least a consistent performer. Vermette at least showed at points in his career he could be a second line guy and a very good third line guy.

I would love to have Jeff Skinner on the Habs. But he's a franchise player in Carolina and would be a huge addition to our attack. The price would be steep. A tire I'd kick, though.

He's certainly in a different league than Sharp and Boyle. I tried to identify players on teams out of the playoff hunt that would be worth looking into. Then I factored in Bergevin's propensity for making moves no one saw coming. Skinner would certainly be expensive. They have a pretty solid defensive group, so I don't see Sergachev as being of interest. I'm not sure what we would have beyond him to interest them.

I don't think Sergachev is going to be our main trading chip - I actually think it's through drafting Sergachev that the Habs thought PK could be moved for an older defenseman, because we had an elite guy coming up. Juulsen and other prospects are more likely to be moved IMO.

Do I think they picked him because of the trade? Maybe. I don't think the gambled he'd be there and then decided to go ahead with the trade though.

Quietest deadline I can remember in awhile News coming out of St Louis is that Shattenkirk has turned down a sign and trade with Tampa. The contract would have been 7 years and $42 million. No word on what Tampa would have sent back to the Blues. The marquee tdl name just decreased his trade value greatly as the only teams interested now won't care when he signs with the Rangers or Bruins in the summer (it's rumoured that these are his preferred teams). I'd go so far as to say he's got the framework of a deal worked out already. It's just a matter of waiting until July 1. EDIT: Apparently this is the second sign and trade he's nixed. Edmonton had a deal worked out that would have sent Hall to the Blues.

I read about the trade earlier and those two names jumped out at me ... we eventually got Christian Thomas for Danny Kristo and I thought that was a good trade for us ... stopped following Kristo after that ... still remember Ron Hainsey getting snapped up on re-entry waivers and thinking (after I cooled off), "oh, that's how that works ..." Cheers.

Blues just re-signed Berglund. He was a dark horse, and likely more affordable, option that I was hoping to see the Habs take some interest in. Not anymore.

I was thinking of what Berg could do to get Duchene and NWT's post about the IceCaps game last night and how well Charlie Lindgren is playing gave me some ideas.
Do you think Sakic would consider this deal? It doesn't give him Chucky or Sergachev, which in itself may squash my thinking.
Habs get Matt Duchene.
Avs get Nathan Beaulieu, Noah Juulsen, Habs' first round pick this year and Charlie Lindgren, Avs may have to take on Desharnais for CAP reasons, but everyone else hardly costs Sakic anything and Berg could even throw in Washington's 2nd round pick. I'm high on both Juulsen and Lindgren, but there's no guaranteed guy of any kind. A lot depends on Sakic's opinion of Beaulieu and Juulsen. I think Lindgren is going to be a very good goalie and god knows the Avs need a goalie badly. He's also not an 18 year old, so he'll probably be ready for the NHL next year.
Ii don't know if sweetening the pot with more 'maybes' would do it. I'd be willing to throw in McCarron too. I really wouldn't want to part with Lehkonen.
I think that deal would work if Sergachev replaced Beaulieu or Juulsen. Would you give up Sergachev? Is the rest of the team good enough for the Habs to contend with Duchene and (hopefully healthy) Chucky at centre? That defense still concerns me.

If Bergevin doesn't make a move to help the team the Habs are in serious trouble this playoff year. It will not be a bandaid solution, such as a first round pick for Hanzal. Will take at least one major roster move.
Coming out of the dressing room for last night's pregame the club looked small. Byron, Gallagaher, DD, Andrighetto, Shaw, Danault, that is a small team up front. As the season wears on they likely are worn down playing in physical NHL.
The team has a big hole at center ice position also. Galchynuk has no idea what he is doing defensively. Plekanec has lost a step, Danault is a fine 2-way, 45-50 point center. But in over his head going up against the top centers in the game.
