I think Hedman's stick deflected Nash's shot high...fooling Vasilevsky. 4-1 Jackets. Who'd a thunk? I said Montreal has a history of playing the #1 seed strong. We just needed to make a move. Now making moves could have easily got us a date with Washington also, but we play them well and Tampa was showing chinks in their armour. But fear of losing ran rampant throughout the organization, so let's take the 15th pick. Oh well. Tampa stil might win, but how do you like Columbus' pick-ups now?

Galley going on about the Pens being ticked about "liberties" taken against Malkin and Crosby at the end. Should anyone be feeling sad for Geno? He's one of the most sneaky dirty players in the league. Have no issue with him taking something in the mush. Suck it up buttercup your owner put up with waaay more abuse. And he didn't instigate it either. Malkin loves to skate around whacking guys, cross-checking, using the chicken wing, and leaving his feet to hit.

What the heck is going on in the first round? This is why they play the games! This is why you don't settle for the 15th pick!

Jackets acquisitions didn't get them into the playoffs or keep us out. Quite the contrary. If Jarmo didn't have two huge pending UFAs, he doesn't go all-in like he did. Comparing is apples and oranges.

Comparing is apples and oranges. Yes, he was in an all-in NOW situation. I think Skilly's point is that perhaps a deadline acquisition to boost offence/bolster defence could've made a difference in the game we lost 6-2 to those same Jackets, or maybe we score more than 1 vs. Washington in that 2-1 loss. The boys had certainly worked hard enough throughout the year to warrant "some" help, no? No guarantees. Hindsight and all. If Columbus loses the first 2 in Tampa, it's a different conversation. Duchene is certainly helping now. Whatever....Berg deemed it either unnecessary or unpragmatic.

I still don't think Columbus is strong enough to go all the way. Tampa is not quite built well for the playoffs. The number of calls the refs are letting go is incredible. I keep waiting for the whistle to blow when I see a play that was an automatic penalty in the regular season and it's completely ignored in the playoffs. The Lightning style is hurt a lot when that happens. The 76-79 Habs could play it and beat you any way you wanted, the LIghtning can't it seems. Then again, the series isn't over yet. PS. Sergachev has 2 points in 2 games.

Duchene is certainly helping now. Whatever....Berg deemed it either unnecessary or unpragmatic. That's a real issue with the morale of the team. I don't have a problem with not improving the team since I was on the tank bandwagon, but from the player's perspective, this is now twice that the team has been competitive (even if not really a threat to win the Cup) and Bergevin has basically done nothing. Ott, Martinsen and King, Weal and Thompson, do not a difference make. That had to really kill the buzz in the Habs dressing room. Whether or not they had a chance, they had played well and even a pickup that cost a 2nd rounder or a prospect might have made a difference toward making the playoffs. Not doing anything sends a message that turned the 2016/18 Habs into the 2017/18 version. Remember how we couldn't figure out Price's attitude and how mad Bergevin was at the 'attitude' of that team in general? He created it. It's just one more reason why a GM has to decide early to either go for it or sink like hell. That middle road (once again) does a lot of damage.

You can't now all of a sudden say Tampa is not built for the playoffs , while before saying Montreal had no chance against them, so why try. We all know the playoffs is a different beast, and that's why I really felt Montreal DID have a chance, because we didn't need that PP and were scratching and clawing most of the year

Comparing is apples and oranges. 100% disagree and I think saying the aquisitions didn't help them get into the playoffs is quite disingenuous. Yes, Columbus HAD to do something. But if they did nothing, they don't make it, we do. So the aquisitions did help get them in. And iI'd argue, if we picked up someone (Nyqvist, Hayes, etc ..not first liners, but solid 2nd / 3rd lines that only cost picks and plumbers) that we'd have been on the Metropolitan side, and one of CLB and CAR would be out. Heck, as CH said, even a decent dman, could have helped and got Benn off the ice

Montreal isn't built for the playoffs either, so you have two teams not built for the playoffs going against each other. Tamps is much more talented, ergo, they win. Hey, I think Tampa is s very good team, but I thought they were ripe for an upset because they hadn't faced any adversity over the season (except maybe the Hedman injury), there was still some uncertainty over how well Vasilevsky would do in the playoffs and for Columbus it was like a huge weight lifted off their shoulders, getting into the playoffs after such a difficult assimilation of Duchene and Dzingel. They were playing with house money while Tampa had all the pressure on them. Columbus' chances depend heavily on goaltending. IF Bobrovsky is going great, they are a tough team. They can skate, they have size and they won't wear down as quickly as some others. Torts is not a good long term coach, but for one year, he can push players beyond where they think they can go. It can still turn around (Caps did it last year), but I think Columbus is different this year and I'm not sure Tampa has that 'anger' that you need to make it personal. Could be wrong. That's still a very good team.

They wouldn't have gone far, though, so it's a trade-off of losing a prospect/pic vs padding Molson's wallet. As I've said far too often, if you're serious about winning you have to get elite players, however you do it.

If any of the "favorites" lose, I'd be dangling Price or Gally.....for a kings ransom.
Puff Lightning and Flameout Jets are DEEP and are going to be under immense pressure to add either character or goaltending. We have one of each.
What am i thinking......BBinz isn't even close to Pollocks dandruff......

Brad Marchand's postgame comments pretty much summed up the TO/BOS game for me ...

Boston playing far more robust tonight than they did in game one. DeBrusk has been playing right up to the "line" all night and maybe crossed it once or twice.

Things turned a bit nasty in the third period. Kadri exacted revenge on DeBrusk with a cross-check to the face. Fair or unfair, Kadri may have yet again made a big mistake in a playoff series against Boston. He is totally set up to be suspended now (the Jacobs effect, in you will). And moreover, the Bruins have more guys who feel at home delivering borderline hits so Kadri may not really be helping his mates by going crazy.

Brian Burke thinks 5 games for sure, maybe 6. "Selfish play," said Burke. "Kadri was a Viking in this game, don't get me wrong. He played well. But, you're still in the game at 3-1. You take the number, you wait and get him cleanly in Game 3." (paraphrased)

It was a selfish, stupid play by a guy that was putting himself ahead of the team.

I know HA is pretty high on him, I'm just not sure what the asking price would be for Kadri ... Cheers.

Even Crosby would have trouble overcoming the handicap of that defense. T'is the start of the Pittsburgh demise. Well done, Mr. Rutherford. Rutherford also has 2 Cups with Pitt. They don't ask how, they ask how many. I'd take those Cups.

I propose any GM could have made that trade, given he's shown nothing of any brilliance in any other deals. Signing Johnson long term was dumb. Trading for Gudbranson was dumb. Ray Shero set the plate for Rutherford with drafts like Murray, Dumoulin and Guentzel in addition to drafting Kapanen who made the Kessel deal possible. Rutherford also inherited Crosby, Malkin and Letang. Can't see where he was such a great architect. The one thing he has in abundance is horseshoes.
