Let's also not forget, that Bergevin wanted to trade up in the draft and wanted Edmonton's pick to be included in the Subban deal. Once Columbus surprised everyone and took PLD before Jesse Puljujarvi, Montreal backed off on it. Yeah well, decent chance Dubois ends up in Montreal. Bergevin seems to go hard after the guy he wants. Paid well for Anderson, Allen, etc... Held out forever until Suzuki was put in play in Pacioretty trade. Pierre-Luc Dubois is a local guy, but did he and Josh Anderson ever play on the same line in Columbus ... that could be another motivating factor in the deal, if that's the case ... just putting it out there ... Cheers.

But I would do Danault and Romanov. I'm not too worried about losing Danault defensive skills given that the ice will tilt. Romanov loss means we lost a top 4 and likely a top 2.

Just a thought....
Romanov played like a top 4. I wonder if he was showcased for a Dubois trade?
Danault and Romanov?

Kk and Guhle vs Danault and Romanov Sure 2C and a probable top 4 vs Redundant 3C and a sure top 2 For a big, tough 1C and possibly top 5 1C in the league. I can't help but love the idea of Kk-Suzuki-Dubois spine...I can't help but cringe at our LHD without Romanov. Guhle and Struble are too far away. Decisions...decisions.....but the only decision I would make is for sure, I want to make the trade. I got visions of Legion Of Doom V2 that wont go away.

Unless the Blue Jackets completely tank, I don't see them making any deal that doesn't include either Suzuki or Kotkaniemi. And even then this is the team that lost a slew of stars and still went for it (and ended up beating Tampa in the process). I don't think "tank" is in Jarmo Kekalainen's vocabulary. So he's going to want NHL players more than prospects, if you ask me.
Suzuki and Romanov are untouchables, as far as I'm concerned. Which leaves Kotkaniemi as the only remaining piece to offer. Cap-wise Danault will have to be included, and probably somebody else, like Lehkonen. Recent deals for players of Dubois's ilk have included two first rounders as part of the asking price. So...
Kotkaniemi, Danault, Lehkonen, two 1st rounders for Dubois and some throw-ins?
That's a tough ask. I'm still not convinced that Kotkaniemi doesn't end up being the better player, perhaps as soon as this year. If Dubois can be had in a steal-of-a-deal, then I do it, but otherwise I'm not sure there is as big a match there as others think.

Where he wants out may get a deal on him.

Kotkaniemi, Danault, Lehkonen, two 1st rounders for Dubois and some throw-ins? A trade like that would be a big hit to the team dynamic, but when I look at CapFriendly I just don't see any other way ... mind you, pressure on Marc Bergevin to bring him in might increase should the team stumble and trip through the first 1/4 of this shortened season, and negotiating out of desperation isn't exactly the way to into trade talks ... Cheers.

I just can't see major transactions happening; doing without high-end players for a 2 week quarantine just isn't an option this year, and even a lesser player, you have to be able to live with the taxi squad guy for 2 weeks beforehand...

Anderson's most common linemates have been Foligno and Jenner, and PLD's linemates seem to fluctuate more, except for 2018-19 when Atkinson/PLD/Panarin was a lock.

I am sure almost every team in the league is calling. But some of the clubs being thrown around do not make a whole lot of sense. Florida? Revenue poor club with likely the smallest fanbase in the NHL. What would Florida give Columbus? The Blue Jackets are not taking garbage like Yandle or overpaid overrated guys like Ekblad. Their prospect pool is kind of meh. And how will the Panthers re-sign Dubois when the same summer Barkov needs a new deal after all these seasons of being underpaid.
If the Devils are all in, then it tells me they are perfectly willing to build a package with Hischier or Hughes going the other way. The question would whether the frugal Blue Jackets consider Hischier to be good value on the contract he has or if they see Hughes as a 1C.
Compared to most clubs, Montreal has the right NHL ready pieces and prospect depth to make something happen. But with the salary cap conundrum and the two week quarantine, it just does not seem realistic to pull it off until July.

Plus how many teams have the young offensive center they want in return? Plus have room to take on cap money. Not many teams can do that. Could be we in front line more than we think. Deal Armia and Danault in trade frees up 5m. Plus imagine they want our top prospect and our first pick.

We don't have the cap space to do that.
The only way to fit Dubois in this year would be to send Danault back. Which is fine, but it could mean we end up with a center depth chart of:
Dubois Suzuki Evans Poehling
And that's assuming Poehling isn't included in the deal as well. I don't know who would play center if Poehling goes. Our top two would be great... but the third and fourth lines would be very iffy.

Kekalainen would probably tell Bergevin to stop calling him if he actually thinks Kotkaniemi, Poehling, and Byron is a serious offer.

Kk at this point isn't enough without Romanov. Dead in the water.
However, 20 games in and Kk is proving he's a 2C ready for 1C, then it's on.
There is no scenario we send Kk AND Danault AND 1st...BECAUSE IF Suzuki or Dubois go down, we're screwed.
If I'm Bbinz, I tell Jackets to wait 20 games and see where Kk is at. If Kk still tweening, then it's pretty much over.
But.....
If Bbinz was half smart, he would already know from his agent OR let his agent know that the red carpet is waiting for him. That would put the Jackets into a corner where we control the horizontal and the verticle.
C'mon....ANY GM worth the title knows that you control events....and two steps ahead. When I was a spring chicken division manager and the company went union, was I going to hand pick the union reps or let it happen? Or worry about some silly regulations or laws?

Kekalainen would probably tell Bergevin to stop calling him if he actually thinks Kotkaniemi, Poehling, and Byron is a serious offer. For sure. But 20 games in and Kk is bona-fide 2C, we add Struble and I think there is a deal there. At this point, Kekasomething would want Kk AND Struble AND Caufield AND a 1st. Tempting overpay but that just wiped out 4 first rounders and a chunk of our future. Byron means nothing to us other then cap relief.

The main thing to watch for is how Columbus performs out of the gate. If there is minimal drama with Dubois and they are doing okay and staying in the hunt for the playoffs, then basically Kekalainen is not going to be in any hurry to take any deal unless it is something extraordinary. There would be more suitors putting together realistic packages in the summer than at present. In other words, unless things come off the rails, time is actually on Kekalainen's side and waiting likely increases the odds of more and better offers coming in.
If Bergevin is determined, he knows the cost will be high.
I continue to think that it would take something like Kotkaniemi, Caufield, and a couple of defense prospects not named Romanov or Guhle. That would be a really nice package and not a lot of clubs around the league could put together something to compete with it.

Does anyone think CBJ put this out to up the price for the Rangers and others? Could also be Kypreos click bait.... I think it's a pretty standard practice to mention Montreal (and Toronto) any time you want to get some click bait. Heck, Eklund made a minor career out of doing it. Even Eliotte Friedman, who I am a big fan of, seems to toss out Montreal any time there is a big name player on the market. I get the connection to Montreal, what with Dubois being a local boy and all, but if his name was John Wood is Montreal being tossed out as a possible destination? Cap space, current depth chart, quarantine rules, same Conference... a lot of reasons why we wouldn't have much interest in Dubois. Suzuki and Romanov are untouchables as far as I am concerned, and Kotkaniemi isn't far behind. I still think Kotkaniemi has the potential to be as good, if not better than Dubois, beginning as early as this year. I could be out in left field on that one, and obviously potential is nothing until it is realized, but I'm still optimistic. As such I would be very careful about not only trading him, but throwing in key pieces on top of that.

Wow.. the center depth being Suze, PLD and KK.... wow haven't had that since the 70s imo

Some of the deals being tossed around by that Ryan Dixon dude at sportsnet are borderline laughable. How about Dubois for Ryan Strome, Kakko, and a second round pick? How about Dubois for Turcotte, Kalyiev, and a second? Good grief, Strome is like a 2C on a bad team who happens to give intermittent effort. Kakko has potential but he actually had a less impressive rookie season than Kotkaniemi had two years ago. Turcotte and Kalyiev have not played in the NHL and for me they are far from being can't miss stars.
I agree with the premise that Kekalainen will want young NHL players who he believes can be big time producers. I do not believe for one instant that anyone is going to convince him with magic beans.
The other thing that was strange about all of Dixon's proposals is that none of them provide the Blue Jackets with young quality blueliners. Kekalainen knows that keeping Jones and Werenski (both needs contracts in 2022) is a long shot so why in the world would he not insist on a young d-man or two?
