The Rocket have done a lot of things right this season, but there is one lingering issue that needs to be sorted out and it cost them big time last night. They need to be able to close out games and not give up leads late in the third. A 3-1 lead with just over 30 seconds to go should be good enough, right? Well, the Moose had pulled their goalie for about the last three minutes to play and scored goals with 32 seconds left and 1 second left to tie. They then went on to win in the shootout. A heart breaking way to see a six game win streak come to an end. No doubt, there will be some learning moments that Bouchard will pass on to his troops after this match.
McNiven took the loss, and Blandisi, Ylönen and Vancouver property Brisebois scored the Rocket goals.
Here is Jesse’s blast from what clearly is becoming “his office”.

Teasdale scored on the first shot of the game, and that was that. 1-0 shutout by Primeau over the Moose.

With the Rocket having spent so much of March on the road, those who have access to RDS have not been able to watch much of the Rocket. RDS is showing all home games this season. There will be many more home games in April (and early May), and the Rocket are playing pretty great hockey right now. Adding Caufield for however long and getting Olofsson (returned from Sweden for the birth of his child) and likely Ouellet (taxi squad and actually travelled with and played with the Habs out West) back at some point boosts the roster even more.

The Rocket had an afternoon tilt against the Moose today. They were pretty listless for the first 40 and were down 3-1 in the third, when Poehling scored to open the floodgates. They scored four unanswered to take the game 5-3.
It was not all good news, as Ylönen left the game after this hit. We shall see soon if it is serious or if he will join Belzile and Vejdemo in the infirmary.

The forward group is currently pretty devastated from injuries over the last three games. They lost Belzile (again) and Vejdemo three games ago, with both to be reassessed when they return to Montreal tomorrow. Ylönen and Mysak both left last game and did not return after some pretty heavy hits. No idea what Weal suffered last game, as he played the whole game it appears. Some time for the guys who have not played much to step up tonight and take on bigger roles. Veilleux returns after missing six of the seven road games to two different suspensions. One was for an unsportsmanlike jester for two games, and then four for a knee on knee hit.
I guess this means Hillis, Khisamutdinov, Hawel, Verbeek should all see action together.

Rocket win 3-1 against the Moose, and take 15 of 16 on this long road trip. McNiven held the fort for the win.

Thanks for sharing that article, Willie. You can really see his increased confidence and engagement, even from the start of the season. It is nice to see. He could play on the fourth line and fit right in given the depth of the team.
One guy I knew absolutely nothing about at the start of the season, Corey Schueneman, just was signed to his first NHL deal for next season. He can skate, and has looked quite good out there on the top pairing with Leskinen.

What really encouraging is we have Evans and Poehling progressing nicely, if we lose Staal and Danault in the offseason, we have guys who can slot into the 3 & 4 C spots and we would have the youngest Centre depth in the league.

The Rocket are still without four regular forwards. Ylönen, Belzile, Vejdemo and Myšák is a lot of talent to be left on the sidelines. Jordan Weal did return after missing his last game. The Rocket just went about their business in what was a tight checking and hard hitting affair last night. Lots of scraps, including this double tilt with Baddock and Pezetta both dropping them for Laval at the same time.
The Rocket were very efficient and ended the night with a nice 3-0 win. Primeau with the 17 save shutout. That was his second shutout in three starts and his 7th straight win. The team has gone 11 straight without a regulation loss and sits 13 points up on Toronto. Goals by Baddock (who also had two scraps and was given a game misconduct for the second fight), Veilleux and Poehling. Brook was solid and had two assists. Fleury left the game part way through, but after the game Bouchard said they do not think it is too serious.
The same two teams are back at it on Sunday night. That should be fun.

Lots of scraps, including this double tilt with Baddock and Pezetta both dropping them for Laval at the same time. quite the tilt, was there a charging penalty on the play? Nope. That was the second time that the Heat’s big lug Gallant took a run at a Rocket player with a big hit and the second time the boys stepped up and took him on. Both he and Baddock got the game for their second scrap of the night, although it was Pezzetta that took him on in the clip. Baddock found a willing dance partner as the clip shows.

A few notes from Bouchard’s presser today.
Fleury and Baddock join the growing list of injured players and will miss tonight’s game. Olofsson (the defender) and Khisamutdinov draw back in.
McNiven will get the start and Demchenko will back him up. The Russian will get a start soon.
No word on when Ylönen, Vejdemo and Myšák will be back, but Belzile could be available. Belzile is on the ice with the team, but no word on if he will play.
Caufield will NOT play on Tuesday at home (darn), but likely will debut on Friday on the road in TO. Bouchard wants him to get some practices in first.

Make that 5 straight wins and 12 games without a regulation loss (11-0-1) for the injury riddled Rocket. They were missing Belzile, Vejdemo, Ylönen, Myšák, Fleury and Baddock last night, but still looked strong in the win. They totally controlled the first period, outshooting Stockton something like 15-1. The second was more balanced, but the Rocket had the better chances and the only two goals. Stockton added two in the third to make it interesting, but then the Rocket sealed it with an EN goal.
McNiven with the win. RHP with two goals and an assist (including the ENG), Weal with three assists, Poehling with the game winning goal and an assist. Lots of chatter and buzz about this diminutive winger they will be adding later this week.

That's an excellent stretch of hockey. I haven't paid close attention to the quality of Rocket goaltending over that period, but based on Primeau's .911 and McNiven's .907, I think it's safe to say that these have not been stolen games for the most part.
Looks like Poehling is now tied for team lead in points. It's been a very impressive climb up the ranks in his case. Its also just nice to see that, for the first time in a long time, 21 and unders with real NHL potential are producing.
Hats off to Bouchard. I'm convinced that he is a good coach with a real good pulse on his team. I'm eager to see how he responds if his tactics start to fall on deaf ears. If he proves that he has the ability to get the team back on track in those moments (ie, not being a Tortorella), I would love to see him in the NHL.

A first loss in ages. It had to happen eventually. All focus is now on the new #44 who should make his pro debut onFriday against the Marlies.
LeGuerrier made his AHL debut. I really don’t expect he will get an ELC this summer due to the numbers game and the better performances and upside of other prospects vying for the same.

Caufield. Debut. Tonight. Rocket.
RDS usually only covers the Rocket home games, but they are adding this game as no doubt they will generate a huge audience tonight. Seems there is a bit of hype and buzz surrounding Caufield’s debut.

What do you do after winning the Hobey? Score your first pro/AHL goal would be the correct answer.

Is there any site out there streaming AHL games? The legal answer for an open forum is AHLtv. They have a deal right now that you can watch all Rocket games for $20 US, which would give you access to all live and archived games for this year.
