Funny how Petry manipulated his situation to play for the team he wanted but somehow, Dubois couldn't. All the guy had to do is sign a one year contract and walk away. Or simply asked for 12 million from LA
Conclusion...Dubois was full of the brown stuff babies produce in abundance.

Yeah, when you combine the return from the two trades, it does not seem too bad. Again, it all goes back to Petry likely bringing a negative vibe into the group and Hughes, knowing this, decided to flush the entire issue without further delay. Sure, he could have played the eff you I'm the boss card and made Petry wait a few months, but I suppose Montreal's management just concluded hey it is not worth the drama. Hughes pretty much confirmed this in his presser saying he could of held out longer for more, but decided not to squeeze the lemon and just wanted to move on as it was best for everyone.

A bit of background.... "sack of olives to the mill" had enormous gravitas behind it. He was born in 1918 in the midst of great hunger. A sack of olives meant you picked 20 sacks to earn it and now, you can feed your family a bit of bread dipped in olive oil. Death from hunger averted for a while longer. Another saying from that time was...."God will look after us. Weeds will always grow near the road." They actually picked weeds, boiled them, added olive oil and ate them with a bit of bread. Hunger death averted for a while longer. Yes. The same weeds we kill in our lawns. I have no idea if they have any nutritional value, or simply filled their stomach with roughage, giving them hope to make it through the days. They went through ANOTHER great hunger post WW2. Some of these saying were born from great pain and desperation....AND we don't know how good our lives are compared to them. I'm lebanese so the dandelion leaves in olive oil is a thing... I'm Italian (anyone sensing a theme here?) and I remember going out as a family to gather dandelion leaves at a railroad junction half an hour from home (in BC). I guess that place just had more succulent dandelions than our town. There sure were a lot of dandelions, anyway. I never quite got a taste for them, but it was a veggie and in a salad, you couldn't tell. Not that we were depression poor, but it was paycheck to paycheck for mom and dad and not because they were blowing it on booze and cigarettes. It may also have been a connection to the old country, where they were depression poor. Post war southern Italy.

The ultimate goal for Hughes (for a while) has been to get rid of the bad contracts Bergie gifted him, develop the kids based on a specific timeline and gather some CAP space. While the return on Petry wasn't great (what was top end? a late second rounder with 50% salary retained?), Hughes accomplished all 3 goals. He got rid of the Hoffman contract, he opened up a spot for a winger and he gained about $2MM in CAP space. Yes, he could have played hardball, but as he stated in the presser, he was balancing the benefit to the team, with the benefit to the player. As Carlo Cipolla points out, if a decision helps yourself and helps the other party affected, it's a smart decision. We'll likely never know for sure, but gaining a reputation as a guy who doesn't consistently screw players in the process of benefiting his team may well benefit the Habs in the future. It shouldn't hurt to do the right thing. Any extra return in Petry is not going to make or break the team.

When things go our way in a free agent signing or signing an extension for a tolerable deal, or when a player lifts his NMC for Montreal, we'll need to remember how guys like Toffoli (going to his former coach on a winning team) and Petry (twice) didn't get shipped out just anywhere, and while that might cost a slight difference in assets it can pay off indirectly. Players talk amongst themselves, and they know which management teams to avoid. Those end up overpaying for second tier UFAs...

I hope it makes a difference for attracting players. It might be a factor for FAs when they have two teams making the same offer - a tie breaker. But from what I've seen of players is that if one team is offering $9 million and the other with a nice gm is offering $8, the player is taklng the $9 and using some of the extra cash to get a self help book - "I'm OK. You're OK.". .

To be honest, when was the last great player to hit free agency? Panarin? They usually resign with their team or get traded to that new team in a sign and trade deal like (Dubois) and Tkachuk. Personally as a fan, I would love to see Matthews hit the market. I hope he milks TO for every last penny in a short term deal.

Personally as a fan, I would love to see Matthews hit the market. Might be the best thing for the Leafs. They'll be fine once the Tavares contract is done in 2 years. He will take a massive pay cut to stay with his beloved Leafs. So in reality it is only next year the issue.

I don't buy that Hughes being extra nice will pay dividens.
I had the greatest customer ever. They actually placed a massive order and paid it in full BEFORE i delivered so i can buy a building. That's how much trust and fantastic working relationship we had.
When China Inc hit us, they still left to manufacture there.
Money talks...and drowns out everything else.
See Dubois...

That is the way things are when the bottom line is really important. For some UFA's, they may have already made more than enough $$, and other factors come into play. Dealing with a class organization is further down the line of things players consider, but it does show up at some point. It doesn't hurt to gain some brownie points as long as the cost isn't high. You're not going to move a good, young player for little just to make them happy.

Low taxes lots of bucks beaches and sunshine. He did what he had to do to get there. OMG he manipulates the system. He isn’t worth what he’s paid. He never had a great year considering his talent. Not a hard worker. Better off without his cap hit and attitude.
