Why does it feel like every season we open on the road against Toronto? And I am guessing our last weekend finishes against them too. (haven't looked).

Ok. Looked it up (meant 1st game of the season regardless of location). Glad to see I am not loosing it. Since 2003:
1st Game of the season: 13 times 2nd game of the season: 4 times 3rd game of the season: 1 time Outlier - 9th game: 1 time in 2016 Lockout - 1 time
As for finishes, I didn't check them all but I would say about 50% of the time we played them on the last weekend.
No wonder why I get less an less interested each season. Tired of being force-fed Leaf garbage each year.

It is standard scheduling that the last part of the season you play many games in your division to intensify the playoff race. And usually they want to pump up the rivalries. FWIW. last time we play Leafs this season will be our 7th to last game. So we won't be able to play spoiler

Sounds like a good time to put a hundred on the Leafs scoring on their first shot on net.

Sounds like a good time to put a hundred on the Leafs scoring on their first shot on net. Only $100. C'mon it's a sure thing

Thanks Dis, magistral!
For sure, it seems every season starts on the road in Toronto. The oddity this season, perhaps the first time ever in a full season, is that Montreal and Toronto only play three times. I know the regular season is painfully long but if Bettman will not budge on the issue of every NHL city getting to see each team at least once in their barn each season, then I would advocate for adding two more games so at least the number of divisional games would be balanced.
I have no problem with Anderson revving it up with Suzuki and Caufield out of the gate. He had a very good camp and we all knew that Slafkovsky was not going to draw the plum assignment before proving that he can produce in a middle six role. A week ago, I would have predicted Monahan as LW on the top line but apparently St. Louis must see him motoring around well enough to play him down the middle. But man, if Monahan is stuck with Pearson and Gallagher, that could be an issue.
I like it if Dach is indeed getting a couple young bucks like Slafkovsky and Newhook. That is a nice package of speed and skill. I do not like the idea of not having Pezzetta in the lineup in a divisional game. If Reaves wants trouble then Xhekaj may have to deal with him. And then if Domi in his first game in front of the home fans who adore his dad wants to be a hero and starts getting chippy and yapping it up, for me it would be preferable to dress Pezzetta and sit one of the other guys (Pearson, Harvey-Pinard, or Ylonen).

Unfortunately (sort of), he's one of our core guys, but I get the feeling Dach could handle himself, especially against a guy with short arms like Domi.

I certainly see Domi being a factor in this game. But with Domi it can go either way. I suspect he'll be out of the gate in a positive way tomoorrow but start to flatten out by Xmas.

Not expecting a win tonight but hoping to avoi a blow-out. I suspect the win % for home team season openers is pretty high. 67% last night with the Pens losing to the Hawks. How anyone sees Pens making the playoffs is beyond me. They didn't make it last year which caused us a high draft pick with Fla advancing. Pens are older and slower - not a hope for playoffs this year.

I don't get the Domi hype in Toronto. He's only 28 but now on his seventh team and his best season was in Montreal in 2018/19.
He's only on a 1 year deal so could see him on his way to another team next year.

I'm excited for this season. I don't expect playoffs but I do expect significant improvement and consistency from our key offensive players: Suzuki, Caufield, Dach.
That said, it's hard to see how those guys can level up without a PP that is at least hitting at league average which was around 21.5% last year. We were 4th from the bottom at 16%. That just has to be better and I put most of that on Marty. There's enough creators and shooters on the team. The PP thing is getting old. Figure it out!!

Due to the recent NHL mandate around Pride Tape, I won’t be watching many games (if any at all). I certainly won’t be going on any trips to see games until the policy is reversed.
So my hockey expert will likely be limited to this site
6-2 Toronto

If Reimer or the Staal brothers dont want to participate, who cares.

I'm curious to see how Josh Anderson does this year. There's been lots written about his work with MSL to evolve his game to more than just a North/South power-forward, and it appeared to be paying off last season. When he was injured he'd been playing some of his best hockey as a Hab with 13 points in 20 games in Feb/March. I could see this being a career year for him.
Also, I agree with folatre about the need for more toughness in this game. There's also Bertuzzi to contend with. The new Leafs will be fired up to leave their mark on the team early and we're outmatched in the physical department without Pezzetta.
Skilly I hear you about the pride tape policy. Pretty puzzling from a league that had a program "hockey is for everyone". Incidentally I just Googled "hockey is for everyone" and the NHL.com search result fittingly reads "no information is available for this page". What would the NHL do if Crosby or McDavid ignored the policy and came out with pride tape one day?

Well leafs are prohibitive favourites against Habs and the media can't wait to get the leafs cup winning season underway I would love to go back over the years to look at articles published at the beginning of each year, about how this is leafs year. I remember last year the Sens writers were so jacked - how did that turn out? I guess they gotta feed their base but some professinalism would help. Or at least, they should be held to account for their poor assessment when the year is done and they were dead wrong, again.

If we get a good goaltending performance tonight, I'll say we win. I also think that in 3-4 years time, we'll look back on this team and say, "That was a hell of a good line-up". It might not be at this stage of development but I always find it fun to look back on some teams to revisit my feelings about them. The 1986 team is an example, where the kids developed into such good players. Richer, Chelios, Skrudlund, Svoboda, Roy, Lemieux, Ludwig. All were at a stage where we find Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Guhle, Harris, Slaf, etc.
Good times ahead, fellas. Geeze that feels so different than the Berg years.

Politics shouldn't be interfering with sports, you can't please everyone and there is always some sort of issue whether it's military night, pride etc., someone will have a problem with it. So get rid of it all and play the game.

Politics aside, I would think the rainbow tape would be distracting for players handling the puck. I was very particular about hockey tape when I played - always white, never black. Rainbow tape on my stick would freak me out.
Now rainbow skate blade holders would be way cool!

So get rid of it all and play the game. We will have to agree to disagree. The players were being forced to wear the jerseys, and felt that they were being singled out for the whole world to know their personal views. Ok, they kinda had a small point here (I didn't agree with what they were claiming), you could argue they should be given the choice. The tape. No one is being forced to use it. Players willing did it. Shouldn't they also have the choice? If not, that's the heights of hypocrisy. If I was a player, I'd be sending a cheque to the NHL head office for $205,000.00 with a note that says "Due to the League's obvious Don't say Gay homophobia policy, I'll be using Pride Tape 82 games instead of ONE" And it's not just pride. The policy also means teams can't bring out kids who are battling cancer onto the ice (so no more Make a Wish puck drops). They can't pay homage to a Black hockey team. And I'll be very interested if they honour any members of the military, because no more military appreciation uniforms, so they shouldn't be allowed to bring out men in uniform at all. I'd also be interested what would happen if a Russian player refused to participate in any military celebrations because he supports Putin ... They are all dumb policies. Let the players choose. It's that simple

Opening night. Always an exciting time. Will be interesting to see the lines. Hoping the young D take a step forward and Newhook looks like a good addition. Only 1 game but would be good to rain on the Make-Be-Leafers...
Prediction, Allen gives up an early goal, Cole with 1, Toronto somehow has 6+ power plays, good guys get a loser point and lose in OT...
On a side note, no season prediction thread/poll this year?

Yeah, I see deficiencies on special teams being a big issue on the road. Allen had better be dialed in from puck drop. I imagine something like Leafs 5-3.
