They wasted so much time. Can someone test Burrows’ IQ? Pass to Caufield. Scary reminiscent of pass to Weber. Nobody is expecting this 😮

Burrows is so predictable 4 on 3 for 2 minutes and I'm figuring we got this one. and then I saw Burrows pull out the white board

Wow...as many good things to take from that game, it was almost all washed away by the last 30 minutes of real time... just awful on two 6 on 5 periods of time where it looked like they had no idea what to do except collapse around the net follow it up by an atrocious 4 on 3 and then 3 poor shootout attempts all by 3 of the culprits on the 4 on 3... MSL has to pay at least some attention to the game flow. Two of our best players on the night were Slaf and Newhook, they should have at least got a look on the 4 on 3...

I expected Allen & Savard to stink and theh did.
What I didn't expect was the coaches failure to improve. Burrows is awful & as Bob just said it seems like MSL isn't paying attention.
Burrow's ineptitude is costing them games. He really needs to go.
A pair of 2 goal leads blown, a goal in the last minute of the 2nd, a goal in close to the last minute of the 3rd. C'mon.

Opening night. Always an exciting time. Will be interesting to see the lines. Hoping the young D take a step forward and Newhook looks like a good addition. Only 1 game but would be good to rain on the Make-Be-Leafers... Prediction, Allen gives up an early goal, Cole with 1, Toronto somehow has 6+ power plays, good guys get a loser point and lose in OT... On a side note, no season prediction thread/poll this year? well my predictions were close, wish i was wrong about the loser point. won one of the easiest bets of life tonight though... Brendan Gallagher U2.5 shots on goal. It is so sad to see as he was one of my favorite players of the '10s but he has fallen so far. It's painful to try and watch him skate out there. Someone needs to have a chat with him. I know he's too proud but really there must be some "injury" that can place him on LTIR for the next 4 seasons

While I'm ranting about the Habs looking as bad as last year, how about those Leafs. Crap goaltending and a sloppy defense along with a really useless signing who doesnt scare anybody. MTL is not a playoff team and yet they should have won this game.

Well, when you have a 6th dman on any playoff team playing on top pairing and in all key defensive situations you're going to lose. That is no joke, but Savard is.
Could be a long season for Suze. bad in pre-season and bad tonight. There's lots of blame to go around but Allen is bad. I suppose this gives marty full reason to have Monty as #1. Not sure he needed anymore reason.
Good news: Dach is going to be a force. and Xman already is.
Pearsson, Gally and Monahan ain't going to work. Too old and too slow.

Agree 100%. The Leafs are even worse than last year. That D is awful. Reaves is a waste of space. Tonight they won on 2 PP goals plus 2 sort of PP goals 6 on 5 and 1 shootout goal. Marner led all Leafs with 25+ minutes of ice time and you barely heard his name Domi is an awful pickup and I think they see that already as he only played 11 minutes Take away those 2 6 on 5 goals which are so rare and the TO media will have a different tune tomorrow. And how quiet was that arena all night long including the opening ceremonies... Regardless that is a perfect Toronto regular season Wednesday night win and the exact opposite of what it takes in the postseason.

Kirby Dach was our best player. He’s like a Swiss Army knife. Super poised and polished with the puck.
Brendan Gallagher. Ugh. He’s basically unplayable.

I was a huge fan of Gally but at this point, he shouldn't be in our lineup. By far the worse player. Better if we had Pez in the lineup. Dach...played like our real 1C. If he keeps this up Suzuki will be be our 2C Slaf...needs to work on his balance but far better then last year. Heads up pass. Newhook...nothing extra noticeable but now has two goals Allen...lost the game for us. Two AHL goals doesn't cut it anymore Armia...totally invisible X...now officially the heavyweight of the NHL. The extra point flatters us because there were stretches were we were looking for our jockstrap. We're still fielding too many rookie defenseman that can't seem to kill the play. Part of that problem was Allen and freezing the puck. We were so use to seeing Price act like a black hole were pressure went to die. PP...still needs work. We have too many assets now to be bottom dwellers on the PP.

A winnable game with a decent goaltender ... very happy for Jesse Ylönen and that lower line ... they were noticeable all night ... welcome to Montreal, Alex Newhook ... would have liked to see him in the SO ... not sure why it is but, win or lose, this edition of the Habs always seem to play the Leafs well ...
Cheers.

That was a horrible loss - COLLAPSE. I would have been OK if Leafs came back to beat us 3-2, or even 4-2 on an empty netter. But to twice give up a 2 goal lead, and to give up 2 goals in the last 5 minutes of the game on two separate 6 on 5s. How often does that happen? Then a team has a 4 on 3 for almost two minutes in OT and can't score. How often does that happen? And then your best players go 0 for 3 in the shoot out, with your captian, the silky smooth shoot out guy, doesn't even get a shot away. How often does that happen? OUCH!!! I need some (more) therapy.

I need some (more) therapy. That's the first thing I noticed when I checked the box score this morning. "Suzuki - shot wide" in the shootout. It was a head scratcher, because he almost always dekes. Didn't even get a shot off huh? 🤦♂️ Up 5-3 with 3 mins to go was the other thing I noticed. This may be an unpopular tactic, but with 3 mins left, I'd call a time out and tell someone to take a penalty. Rifle it over the glass, or something. At least then, with 6 on 4 you can ice the puck and not worry about not being able to change if it's icing.

I may not agree with their decision, but I understand it. Politics shouldn't be interfering with sports, you can't please everyone and there is always some sort of issue whether it's military night, pride etc., someone will have a problem with it. So get rid of it all and play the game. We will have to agree to disagree. The players were being forced to wear the jerseys, and felt that they were being singled out for the whole world to know their personal views. Ok, they kinda had a small point here (I didn't agree with what they were claiming), you could argue they should be given the choice. The tape. No one is being forced to use it. Players willing did it. Shouldn't they also have the choice? If not, that's the heights of hypocrisy. If I was a player, I'd be sending a cheque to the NHL head office for $205,000.00 with a note that says "Due to the League's obvious Don't say Gay homophobia policy, I'll be using Pride Tape 82 games instead of ONE" And it's not just pride. The policy also means teams can't bring out kids who are battling cancer onto the ice (so no more Make a Wish puck drops). They can't pay homage to a Black hockey team. And I'll be very interested if they honour any members of the military, because no more military appreciation uniforms, so they shouldn't be allowed to bring out men in uniform at all. I'd also be interested what would happen if a Russian player refused to participate in any military celebrations because he supports Putin ... They are all dumb policies. Let the players choose. It's that simple It's not the players decision, it's the employers. In a world of political correctness all the owners are scared to ruffle feathers and risk upsetting the cancel culture ie, Budweiser. So the simple solution is to get rid of it all, and that's what they did. Pride day is gone, military nights, BLM stuff, all gone. No one to blame but each other.

It’s not entirely the employers decision either as they can’t contravene the CBA nor the Rule Book (without involving the Union) So what’s the repercussion if a player decides to wrap his stick in rainbow colours? A fine? A suspension? What exactly? I can tell you what the Union will say. “No $%ing way you can do anything to him when Rule 10.1 of the NHL Rulebook states a players stick blade can be wrapped in adhesive tape of ANY COLOUR” They want they rule changed? They have to go through the competition committee of which players are apart of through the NHLPA

Scott Laughton with the Flyers is using pride tape, he doesn't care... maybe the league should worry about having better refs...

My thoughts when considering the obvious flaws we show on our team are that there is one reason why all these things are allowed to continue.
Poor PP because Burrows is not that bright. (part of the reason is cost. I bet end of this season, Burrows is not renewed) No improvement in goal No discipline in our zone
It's a stealth tank. Management rightly believes that we are still lacking an elite forward. The D is coming along handsomely. When Reinbacher, Hutson, Mailloux and Engstrom join the team, within 2 years we'll have the best defence in the league. Our 3rd pair will be 2nd pair guys on most teams. Goal is unknown because it's such a weird development position. One of the kids we've drafted could at least be an average NHL goalie. Up front, we like Caufield, Suzuki, Dach, Newhook, Slafkovsky. They'll be joined by Beck, Roy and then there will be depth like Ylonen, Davidson, Kidney etc. But one more high end talent (dare I use the names Celebrini, Eiserman and Demidov?) would be huge. We're too good to finish behind (ahead?) of Anaheim, San Jose and Philly, so we'd need some lottery luck, but it's a better plan than doing better than expected this year and just missing the playoffs.
The other option is turning some of our defense capital into forward capital and that's a possibility given the number of potential solid NHL dmen we have in the pipeline. But for now, the plan is to very quietly not do so well this year.

I also think Fowler is our stud goalie of the future... his cockiness reminds me of St. Patrick

You just need to be better than Samsonov, and Allen was not. And that's not good! I have Ilya Samsonov in my pool, and I thought he was better than what we saw last night ... there were times in the game where the Leafs couldn't deal with the Habs' speed, but despite the score, it came down to simply being better than the other guy, and we weren't ... hey, it's only one game and the guys played very well ... the Habs had a good 1st period, gave up the 2nd, but went back to playing on their toes for most of the remainder of the game ... that was a winnable game and the organization gets that ... they drafted three goaltenders, and they're on it ... Cheers.

BTW...anybody notice that after X tuned up Reaves, he toned down his hitting?
That's true heavyweight deterence.
If Little X can be a 30 point heavyweight up front, we got ourselves two usefull heavyweights for the next 15 years.
And of course, I'm hoping Mailioux also adds to the Pain Givers.

For sure, Cranky, if Little X can tune up his first step and skate at NHL speed, the Habs could have another heavyweight in the lineup come 2025-26. And Mailloux could definitely be a big man who dish out pain, though if his skill makes him a 22-23 minute a night stalwart then he will have to pick his spots chucking knuckles.
Allen made some incredible saves while dealing with a high volume of dangerous chances against, but he also let in a couple that looked softish. Playing in front of young d-corps and too many forwards without lock down qualities, Montreal will need better play in net this season to even sniff 80 points. For me I care relatively little about the point total because this is a transition season.
If management and St. Louis think Monahan is an ace up the sleeve that other teams are underestimating then they need to get him away from wingers like Gallagher and Pearson. Carrying one of those guys would be enough of a chore for Monahan who cannot really find a higher gear, but burdening him with both of them is malpractice. Just like last season where Pezzetta got scratched for the first 9-10 games out of deference for the Dadonovs, Drouins, Hoffmans, and Armias taking up space on the team, I predict Pezzetta will become a regular again sooner rather than later. Management does not owe Pearson anything. And even though I love Gallagher for everything he gave the Canadien over the years, Bergevin unwisely gifted him the golden parachute retirement contract and frankly St. Louis and the current management should relegate him to a 4RW assignment (or press box) if that is the level of play he can bring to the table.
I loved the Dach line last night. They were dynamite. And Evans line bit the Leafs in the backside twice. Burrows is useless. The special teams, unfortunately, look like a continuation of the disaster they have been since he arrived. Essentially last night the Habs gave up four short-handed goals, which is just not acceptable in any league.

Reaves became a church mouse the rest of the game

All the Leafs outlets are going on about how Reaves did his job to enrgize the team that led to the comeback. And Trevling must be happy with his off-season pick-up. I guess perspective is everything, and wanting to believe leafs will win cup trumps all. For the record, when X manhandled Reaves the score was 1-0 habs. If not for Cole's disallowed goal it would have been 3-0 Habs before the comeback. So 2 unanswered goals by Habs after Reaves embarassed himself. And Reaves was a -1, and his TOI for the game was 8:03, lowest of any leaf. I guess that's a good outing for a player getting $1.3 million eaxch of the next 3 years
