I'm pretty confident HuGo will do the wright thing... Slaf was the right pick, I'm feeling good about Reinbacher... I see what you did there. 🙂 Darn autocorrect...

Hockey is debatable and the totally unexpected can happen, but for me the issue of the first round pick is not closely related to management's search for a young NHL ready forward who can add goals to the lineup for 2024-25. The reason I say this is because I do not believe Hughes will trade Montreal's first rounder for anyone who is not a sure-fire first line difference-maker.
Whoever is on the radar will be targeted with other assets.

I'm interested to see who Hugo pick in the late 2nd round (around 60th overall) with the pick they got for the Lechy deal which brought us Barron. Right now, it's looking like Hugo got scalped on that deal as Lechy is, as most of knew, a real player. Barron? Not so much. And Avs are only paying him $4.5 million. If only HuGo could have unloaded Gally or Anderson in that deal

The latest rumours are depending where they finish in the lottery that they will either trade this years two first round picks to move up to 2nd or 3rd. Or, they will package this years later first round pick and Montreal's own 2025 first round pick and perhaps a prospect to trade for a top forward.
Also, since we are talking about rumours, there is talk about the Habs wanting Stamkos and he may be willing to sign with the Habs.

Which means HuGo, who are suppose to know all about young prosepcts, got it wrong. As the rebuild continues, we are starting to see the outcome of Hugo's decisions. And this is one in the loss column.

Tampa can't afford him so they are letting him go, unless he signs for 2-3 million which we know wont happen. I'm a pass with him at that price, if he would sign for maybe $5 then I'm good, but I'd rather we sign someone who fits in our age group.

It depends if we snag celebrini or demidov, then Stamkos is a short term filler... on the 2nd line with Dach and Roy... strong 2nd line... newhook dvo bgal on the 3rd line

If we can do a sign and trade for Marner, then that is something to consider. Him and Dach would make a good duo and solidifies the top two lines. The only issue is I don't see him taking less than 10 million. I also know he has had a bad playoff and is not the first playoffs where he has been like that.

Marner is making 10 million now so any deal will have to be north of that & to me that's a non-starter.
The media is souring on him. The Toronto Sun has had him on their cover twice this week with highly critical headlines. Nylander despite his goal slump seems to be getting a pass.

Marner is not taking a pay cut (he is $10.9 now). And I do not believe his next destination will be a market like Montreal.
Stamkos, who knows. He is the captain and a genuine legacy piece in Tampa with two Cups. I think with his family established down there and love for the community, he will probably just sign a Giroux type deal (3 x 6.5 or maybe if BriseBois is willing to go four years then the AAV could be something like $5.75).
Interesting idea about the Habs trading #5 and Winnipeg's pick to jump up to #2-3. I would be willing to do so if Hughes and the scouting department see an elite offensive difference-maker. I have no idea when Demidov will come to North America, but for me he looks like a potential 90-100 point wizard once he settles in.

The only issue is I don't see him taking less than 10 million. I also know he has had a bad playoff and is not the first playoffs where he has been like that. I don't mind adding Marner, depending on the cost. He'll be 27 next week, so he's in his prime rather than entering his prime where I'd rather he was. I don't have the concerns that others do regarding playoffs. He was the basic reason the London Knights won the Mem Cup and he's put up 49 points in 54 playoff games, hardly a disappearance. He kills penalties, blocks shots and I think he's become the scapegoat for the Maple Leaf's management failures. Goalies and defense have been the reason the Leafs fail in the playoffs. The cost will be the issue as well as his contract, so those things discourage me more than his talent and grit. RE Stamkos. Not interested at all unless it's 2 years at $3MM per and he'd never settle for that, or at worst, he'd get that from Tampa. Frankly, I'd like to just keep going as we are. Any UFA we add will have to be a supporting cast, specialist type guy. We have to develop our own elite players and they are coming. HuGo may adapt this with a trade involving Winnipeg's pick and some of the 2025 picks we own. Basu and Godin suggested Anton Lundell of Florida, because the Panthers have some contracts expiring and CAP issues may force them to move someone they'd rather keep. Lundell is very defensively responsible and has some offensive upside. He'll be 23 in October. Kent Johnson was another name. I wondered about JJ Peterka in Buffalo, who need defensemen badly, especially RHD's. Peterka for Mailloux? Mailloux and Harris or Winnipeg's pick? Peterka had 28-22-50 in 82 games this past year. He's 22 and there's no reason for Buffalo to trade him except their dire need for defensemen and the fact they have several young forwards arriving who could replace him. Benson for one, Jiri Kulich, Matt Savoie, Isaak Rosen and Noah Ostlund. So Peterka is a guy they could sacrifice to strengthen a weak area. It would be win, win for both teams. Peterka is a solid top 6 player, with more upside to come.

Sorry, but Marner ain't anywhre near my radar screen, nor HuGo's, for many reasons:
1) we don't need another smallish forward on our top 6; 2) the guy has limited determination, and seems like a bit of a baby, if not a cancer in the lockeroom; 3) I have no doubt that by mutual agreement Marner doesn't want to come to Mtl and Hugo don't want him; 4) if he came to Mtl he would want more than Suze and that would be heresy. When Hugo do get around to paying a player more than Suze, that player will be an elite stud; 5) Hugo have work hard to build a culture and Marner is the antipathy of that culture. 6) he seems to have a hard time dealing with the media in TO, and he won't do any better in Mtl.
He would probably demand to wear the Pocket Rocket's number. NOT HAPPENING!!!

Yea, I "pass" on Marner. Obviously, for the right price he's a talent that you can't walk away from, but at his current price tag he's just too expensive given the attitude deficiencies that he brings. Maybe if the locker room culture is strong enough, you can bring him on but it's a risk. I just don't see us ever winning a cup with him as the addition.
Stamkos I would bring on board for sure. He'll have tons to teach the youngsters and is still producing at a ppg rate. All of our youngsters will become better pros and winners if you bring on a guy like him. I would be willing to overpay on a SHORT Stamkos contract. Monahan was overpaid in 2022-23, yet still a great piece to have. I see Stamkos as being an even better addition than Monahan was, as long as it's something like 3 years.

We have 4 mill coming off the books with Pearson and White, we have to decide what to do with X and Ylo... both are RFAs but Ylo has the hammer. I say offer Arber an 8 year deal at around 3 million (the kid is looking for stability, he wants to retire his parents) and Jesse does not seem like he is a fav of the coaching staff so he should be moved, my concern is he turns into a Lehky elsewhere.

I hope, wherever we end up picking, that the pick is selected with consideration towards making a future trade.
That's not exactly BPA as most want, but I'd prefer we pick the BPA based on need. Ie - the best forward available vs the best defenseman available
Montreal is very very very close to a cross-roads with their defensive corps. By that, I mean, there is not enough development time and space to utilize ALL the defensemen internally, so they are going to have to start moving some, and getting assets back. So if they plan on drafting a defenseman, they better trade some defense prospects asap to get young offensive talent.
Montreal has to be the only organization in the NHL, with 13 NHL ready defensemen. With Trudeau being on the outside looking in as a possible 14th. Personally, I think it's time to turn our collective efforts towards building the offense.
************************
Purely as a thought experiment, which team defense below would you prefer. You can't mix and match, you have to choose one or the other
TEAM A Matheson- Mailloux Guhle - Harris Struble - Engstrom Savard Trudeau
TEAM B Hutson - Reinbacher Xhekaj - Barron Konyushkov-Kovacevic Norlinder

Blake has made some poor decisions (dumping Quick, trading Faber)and signing Dubois is probably the worst. He's now on his way to playing his way off his 3rd team. And I thought the Kings were the team he dreamed of playing for. This guy just wants a paycheck without accountability. I'd be surprised if anyone on this board would be willing to give him a look.
