I concur with Skilly. I interpret the very 'dense' language involved in this trade is that for Montreal to luck into getting a top ten pick from Calgary in 2025, this would require Florida to be terrible and thereby culminate in the protection of the Panther's 2025 first rounder (i.e. they get to keep it and would instead send their 2026 first rounder to Calgary).
I do not think there is more than a tiny sliver of a chance of Florida being bottom third of the league type of bad in 2024-25. Thus I do not think Craig Conroy is overly worried about the ramifications of tanking next season, provided he has the permission of his club's ownership to do so. This is why my favored scenario is for Calgary to be bad (far from playoffs) but not really bad.

The key is that Florida has to miss the playoffs. If they do, their pick falls into the lottery and they keep it rather than handing it to Calgary, which then weakens our pick. Florida gives their 2026 pick to Calgary but we don’t care.
We would then have Calgary’s 2025 pick with one exception. If Calgary nails the lottery and gets the 1OA PICK, we’ll be given their 2026 pick.
So, let’s assume our prayers are answered and Florida misses the playoffs. Where do you think Calgary finishes? Is Markstrom going elsewhere? I’m guessing they’ll be a lottery team again, but not sure where. Probably bottom 10.
My management advice is to not trade that pick this summer unless it’s a real sweetheart of a deal. We can trade it anytime during the next year. But if we see Florida get off to a slow start, maybe get a few injuries or two, that pick gets more valuable. Florida has to replace 10 UFA’s next year. That’s like a whole new team. They aren’t going to be able to replace the quality because guys like Tarasenko wIll have their whole CAP apply, not 25%. Even if they re-sign guys, (Reinhart) they’ll cost more. That team isn’t going to be nearly as good. There isn’t much in the pipeline either.
I’m thinking there’s a 20% probability of the Panthers having a lottery pick. What if Montreal, Buffalo, Detroit and NJ all make a push for a playoff spot? It has to happen sometime. That too would put pressure on the Panthers. In other words that Calgary pick could be the Golden Goose. Don’t give it away.

If we are talking dream scenarios
There is a chance, albeit very small, that MTL could get the #1 overall pick in 2026 if the cards all fall into place. But it means CGY has to get the #1 overall in 2025

But it means CGY has to get the #1 overall in 2025 I thought of that as a silver lining to us ending up with Calgary's 2026 pick, but I'd already stretched the fantasy probability limits, so thought I wouldn't go down that road. You realize who looks to be the #1 pick in 2026, right? Gavin McKenna, the 16 year old kid who dominated the U18's for Canada. If all that came to fruition, I'd put up a statue of Hughes in my own yard.

Cryogenics apart, McKenna is in that class of guys who starts the very next season as the #1 or #2 centre. We'd have a really good centre or two who would have to move to the wing, or be traded.

So looking at the results of the Combine I can't help but feel they're a waste of time and a lot of hype. Very few of the top prospects finished in the top 10 of any of the drills. Obviously, it doesn't tell you anything about talent, and it's really about fitness which most kids can work at if a draft selection is at stake. I sure hope HuGo ain't drafting on fitness. And then there's the interview, which can be done at any time during the year and probably has with the scouts. Sure the Habs question as to "If you were an animal, which one?" is fun but at this point every prospect knows it's coming and has probably spoken to friends and AI to consider their response. FWIW, of the top prospects, Iginla was the best as he finished in top 10 in a number of the drills. Now if only i knew what animal he thinks he would be

Perhaps another team is now asking the question: probably the Leafs, as they're always on the forefront of assessing talent.

I’d still reply ‘man’ because we are the apex predator.

What kind of animal?
It's so obvious what they want to hear as an answer, you got to turn the table on them.
"I like to be a bat"...figure that one out. After you string it out, well, it's obvious, I rather be the bat then the ball.

It was asked this year Seattle was asking players what their Uber rating is

Fearless prediction: Habs move the Avs 2nd and a lesser pick to trade up into the middle of the 2nd round. Possibly for Aatos Koivu.
