Ottawa had a big win at home over the Panthers to kick off the season. I did not see any of the game, but apparently the Senators defended hard as Florida brought the heat in the second and third periods.
Montreal needs to tighten up defensively as five man units. The reality is 'opening night 48 save shutout Montembeault' may only appear two or three times all season. The Habs need to defend hard and smart so wins can be manufactured when it is just 'good Montembeault' in net.
What is the story with Stuble? If he not injured, St. Louis and Robidas need to get him the lineup. There are a number of guys who deserve to come out (Barron, Matheson, Xhekaj). Obviously, Matheson is not getting pulled. And given how Travis Green likes his troops to stir the pot, it would be inadvisable to bench Xhekaj.
Any changes looming up front? I would insert Pezzetta to provide another hitter who makes guys on the other team less comfortable. I know St. Louis feels a certain affinity for Barre-Boulet, but come on how many undersized 27 year olds with only 70 NHL games bring something indispensable to the table?
This first week of the season continues to be a serious challenge with a third division rival. In addition to the dreadful special teams in St. Louis' first two seasons, the record within the division has been the other clear impediment to the Habs reaching a more competitive level (2022-23, 6-19-1; 2023-24, 5-13-8). I know the Atlantic is tough, but any club aspiring to hunt for the playoffs needs at a bare minimum to average a point per game within the division.

The Canes/ Lightning game is featuring a lot of disjointed performances. One has to remind themselves it is October so almost everyone will be out of game shape and not have their timing. Lots of energy in the game, so there’s no lack of effort on either team.

Mailmam pots 2 and assists on 2 in his first game yet....8 preseason games Marty The Blind...err...Marty the Brilliant doesn't see fit to put him to run the power play DESPITE his skating and cannon. Despite 3rd highest scoring defenseman in the AHL last year. Meanwhile Barret-Boulet, the Quebec born, zero point, undersized nowhere man is on our second PP. Why? At some point it's going to look suspicious...or incompetent. theahl.com/stats/player-stats

From what I gather he was suppose to show his safe, defensive game in pre-season. It showed. He curtailed any rushes and generally didn't take chances. Half his game was put on the back burner. Meanwhile Marty the Magnifident didn't put him on the PP where he could shine. So Marty deliberately not using Mailmans offense makes absolutely no sense. When I watched him, he wasn't better OR worse then any other defenseman. What I was hoping to see never materialized even when the opportunity was there for the taking. The only thing that makes sense is the imposed limit of the above. If he keeps this up for 10 games and doesn't get rewarded then it's deliberate. We may even have our own problem child demanding a trade.

Isn't Barron waiver eligible? Because I'm pretty sure Mailloux is not.
That could be the reason why Barron is in the NHL right now.

I still like MSL for a lot of reasons, but I have this theory that he thinks (and can be) the smartest guy in the room. The problem is that 25% of the time, he isn't, but he has a hard time listening to other opinions. There's too much of Bergevin in that attitude (though, he's nowhere near as dumb as Bergevin), but once he gets an idea in his head and a method to implement that idea, he will run it to death before he changes it. Barre-Boulet is an example. BB showed some good effort and smart plays in camp and preseason. As we all know, the game changes throughout the year. It ramps up at the start of the season, and then at a couple of other stages in the regular season and then up to 100% in the playoffs. BB has shown me in the first couple of games that he's too slow to be competitive at this level. The NHL vets have bumped their pace and BB is noticeable less effective. He's also small, which Hughes and Gorton have a low tolerance for. I believe they acquired BB for Laval, but Marty has thrown a spike in the spokes. It will have to change. No one will pick up BB on waivers, especially if it happens early as they're still trying out their own cheap guys.
Mailloux may have processing challenges which he will hopefully overcome with more reps, but not trying him on the PP in the preseason was indeed stupid. He can pass (which Mytheson has trouble with) and he has that blast from the point. If defenders have to respect that shot, it opens up space. Duh. The last shot I saw Mytheson take, it got blocked and the blocker would have liked to attack, but had to chip it in and go for a line change. Mytheson gets a lot of shots blocked. Arber doesn't. Mailloux doesn't. Guhle doesn't. So WTF (W is why) is Mytheson still quarterbacking the PP? Because Marty is stubborn. He's going to prove himself right, even if the PP has to go to 8% efficiency. Our latest oxymoron....8% efficiency. Sigh.

It is true that Matheson led the team in shots taken that were blocked (151). You know who led the league? Quinn Hughes (242). Should he be taken off the PP? Others in the top ten ... Burns, Josi, Dobson, Makar. Matheson's 151 shots that were blocked was 32nd in the league.
Oh, and Caufield had 128 shots blocked.
It's not a real good barometer on who should be on the PP and who shouldn't. Those on the PP will most definitely have more shots blocked.
If we put Hutson on the PP, they are going to need someone who stays back, cause he likes to roam deep.

I wonder how many got through of all those guys mentioned. You can pull out stats but you also need your eye test to balance it out. If Hughes has 242 shots blocked but 900 get through, that's meaningful. If Matheson has 151 shots blocked and 200 get through, that says something else. I see a lot of Hughes and I'd guess that a good majority of his shots get past the first blocker. Something only stands out to me if it seems to happen more often than it should. So, Yeah, I'd yank Matheson off the PP tout de suite because there are better alternatives, when taking several factors into account.

He can pass (which Mytheson has trouble with) and he has that blast from the point. If defenders have to respect that shot, it opens up space. The preseason was an eye opener on brilliant Martys coaching. It changed my opinion from a willing coach trying and adopting to an MThead level stubborness, even when it's failing. The absolute physical domination by the Booins also brought up another failure. Booins are coached into a physical, aggressive style of play. Marty is trying to coach Martiness into this team. Which lands up as disjointed, soft, perimeter play. We are within 3 pounds of matching the Booins physically yet we looked like the old HabsSmurf teams. That is purely and singularly a Marty coaching problem. The honeymoon is dead...

To summarize
Matheson shoots less than Hughes, hits the net more than Hughes, has shots blocked less than Hughes, and misses the net less than Hughes
Am I saying Matheson is better than Hughes? No. But he is way better than a lot are making him out to be. Hughes had 38 PP points. Matheson had 28 PP points
The data suggests that Matheson should be directed to shoot more and not look for Caufield ad nauseum. The current PP does the same thing. Look for Caufield first, think to shoot as a last resort

Diving further into the "slap shot" theory
Montreal scored 232 goals last year (when you subtract the 4 shootout goals). 17 of those goals were scored by a slap shot. That's 7.3% of MTL goals
Only 4 players on the team had more than one goal with a slap shot.
Suzuki had 3 Slafkovsky had 2 Xhekaj had 2 - is this why people want him on the PP? Savard had 2 - so why aren't people clamouring for his clapper?
Matheson had zero goals with a slap shot
The key to a good PP is not getting a slap shot on net, it's getting any shot on net with bodies in front
