Bulldogs show toughness: Julien Oct. 7, 2002. 12:42 AM Garry McKay The Hamilton Spectator If head coach Claude Julien has learned anything in the Hamilton Bulldogs' three preseason games, it's that he probably doesn't have to worry about toughness.
In all three games, including the Dogs' 3-3 overtime tie with the Rochester Americans Saturday night, there were more than enough guys willing to take on that role.
"In my first two years in Hamilton, that has been an issue every year," said Julien.
"Right now, there are a lot of guys that are showing they are willing to do that job and to provide our team with some team-toughness.
"You just have to look at Benjamin Carpentier, Francois Beauchemin, Jay Vancik and Jeff Zehr. There are a lot of guys that realize they can do it and they don't mind doing it."
And that may be important to the Bulldogs because it's looking more and more like Alex Henry will at least start the season with the Oilers.
At least one Edmonton paper is saying Henry has likely edged out Ales Pisa for the seventh defenceman's spot.
The Oilers did give the Bulldogs some help on the weekend, sending down defencemen Alexei Semenov and Bobby Allen, along with left winger Jani Rita and right winger Fernando Pisani.
The moves reduce Edmonton's roster to 28 players.
The news isn't as good on the Montreal front, however. A report out of Utah has the Canadiens possibly pulling Eric Landry out of Hamilton and re-assigning him to the Grizzlies.
Julien would only say that the Canadiens have not made a final decision on that move.
It would be disastrous for the Bulldogs, who at this point appear in need of both scoring and veteran leadership. Those are two qualities Landry can provide.
On Saturday at the Webster Ice Arena in suburban Rochester, the Bulldogs got goals from Beauchemin on a slapshot from the point on a powerplay, Jerome Marois on a breakaway and Tomas Plekanec on low shot from right in front for a 3-3 tie with the Amerks to even their preseason record at 1-1-1.
Rochester got goals from Kevin Colley, Jaroslav Kristek and Milan Bartovic.
He scored with just nine seconds left.
Hamilton outshot Rochester 39-29, including 6-1 in overtime.
Eric Fichaud went the distance in goal for the Bulldogs.
Plekanec and Jozef Balej worked well together on a line with Zehr and Tony Salmelainen had a strong game playing with Mike Bishai and Nate DiCasmirro.
Julien gave the Dogs today and yesterday off. The team has been kicked out of Copps Coliseum for the week because of the preparations for the Queen's visit on Thursday.
The Bulldogs will practice tomorrow through Friday at 10 a.m. at Chedoke and then move to the Barton Doublerinks for practices Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 10:35 a.m.
All practices are open to the public.
The Dogs open the regular season a week from tonight in Rochester and play their home opener on Friday, Oct. 18 against Syracuse.

Nice to see Pleks and Josef together. When Hossa gets sent down, Julien should try those 3 together.

Himelfarb Update from the Sun www.slam.ca/Slam021007/chl3-sun.htmlby Mike Koreen Instead of sulking after a disappointing rookie camp with the Montreal Canadiens this summer, Eric Himelfarb decided to take the high road. The Thornhill native, who was cut before the Canadiens' main training camp, showed yesterday he's determined to make a big impact with his new junior team, the Barrie Colts. Himelfarb, traded to the Colts from the Sarnia Sting in a five-player deal this summer, scored the winner on a breakaway with 2:25 left in the third period to lift Barrie to a 2-1 win over the St. Michael's Majors at St. Mike's Arena. It was the first meeting between the Colts (3-3-0-0) and the Majors (3-1-2-1) since Barrie swept St. Mike's in last year's Ontario Hockey League Eastern Conference final. "I didn't play so well (at rookie camp) and (Canadiens management) told me to go back here and have a great year," the 5-foot-11, 170-pound Himelfarb said. "When you get sent back early, you have something to prove." A sixth-round pick by Montreal last year, Himelfarb, 19, notched 83 points as the captain of the Sting last season. Sarnia executives, though, felt the team needed a shakeup after a first-round playoff exit. When Himelfarb found out the Sting was looking to move him, the centre, who has three goals and four assists in six games this season, waived his no-trade clause. "I was thrilled to come to Barrie," said Himelfarb, who has recorded a point in each game this season. "I struggled last year and it's better for both sides to get a fresh start." With the teams locked in a 1-1 snoozer, the fleet-footed Himelfarb split Majors defencemen Kevin Klein and Nathan McIver and then barrelled in on goaltender Andy Chiodo, putting the puck into the net while sliding on the ice. Himelfarb then blocked a shot with the Majors on the power-play in the final minute to help the Colts preserve the win.

I saw the highlights from the Colts-Majors game Himelfarb scored the winner on a breakaway. Very ugly goal but they all count.

how do you score an ugly breakaway ? did he shoot it, save by the goalie and the puck bounces in off his head a la Stu Grimson?

He skated in, ran over the goalie, the goalie droped the puck and it went in. He just ran him over it looked lie the net came off before the puck crossed.

Thanks Garbo.
God, the Bulldogs will be stacked. Rita and Stoll have been sent down by the Oil. They have Hossa-Pleks-Balej to work with. Komi and Semenov on defence...
They better win with so many great kids...

Saw Thomas Linhart play on Sunday in an overall lacklustre preformance by the Mississauga slush puppies. I was curious to see how well he could play, but he showed very little as did the team.He is big and seems to skate well but like I said he was a non factor. When I can stomach another game I'll give you guys an update. The Dogs are supposed to be much improved, but they still have a ways to go as far as what I have seen so far. HFTO

Canadiens make a faux pas Oct. 9, 2002. 12:49 AM Move of Eric Landry not best marketing Garry Mckay The Hamilton Spectator Hamilton Spectator File Photo Eric Landry, a key acquisition for the Hamilton Bulldogs this winter, has been reassigned by the Montreal Canadiens to their Eric Landry The first puck hasn't even been dropped yet on the Montreal Canadiens era in Hamilton and already the Habs have dropped the ball.
The Canadiens, in one of their first significant moves since bringing their American Hockey League farm team to Hamilton, have given the Hamilton Bulldogs the shaft.
The Canadiens are assigning Eric Landry, their best minor league player, to their other AHL farm team, the Utah Grizzlies. It's a move that will no doubt anger Bulldogs fans since Landry was a fan favourite when he played here in 1996-97 and was a big part of their run to the Calder Cup finals.
He's also one of the top players in the AHL. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound centre led the Quebec Citadelles in scoring last year with 32 goals, and 43 assists for 75 points in just 63 games. That was good enough for seventh place in league scoring.
Bulldogs coach Claude Julien is being stoic about the Habs' decision.
"It's a situation where Montreal had to make some decisions and those decisions are tougher when you share a joint affiliation with another team," said Julien.
"There's no doubt Landry would be here if this was just Montreal's organization. They have some young guys they want to bring in here and there are some guys like Benoit Gratton and Jason Ward that they rank as call ups.
"I understand where Montreal is coming from. Their reasons were thought out and made sense. We'd all love to have Eric Landry here and I'm sure Montreal would too if they had the whole team."
Sorry Claude, Montreal's decision makes no sense whatsoever. Not from a hockey point of view and not from a marketing point of view.
The Canadiens want their young players in Hamilton to learn and develop. Young players learn and develop when there are veteran players around to provide leadership. And they learn and develop quicker in a winning environment.
Landry would have helped provide both. His scoring, especially will be sorely missed on a team that looks as though it has a fair number of good, young, set up men but not a lot of snipers.
In the new era of the Hamilton Bulldogs Landry would also have given the club a player, a star player in the AHL, that they could market.
Instead, the Canadiens, for some reason think it's more important that he do that in Salt Lake City.
Martin Madden, the Canadiens assistant general manager didn't return a call from The Spec yesterday.
And what does Eric Landry think about the move?
Landry, whose wife is expecting, left Hamilton late yesterday after receiving the news, without talking to reporters, to head home to Montreal.
After the team's practice Landry made it clear to Bulldogs' play-by-play man Derek Wills where he wanted to play.
"This is close to home for me and I had such great fun when I played here before, for sure, I would rather be here," said Landry. "I know Claude, he's a great coach and that would make it easier for me."
And Landry agrees with Matthieu Descoteaux, who was also assigned to Utah by Montreal, that they might find themselves out-of-sight-out-of-mind as far as the Canadiens are concerned.
"The further away you are the easier it is to get forgotten," says Landry. "That's definitely in the back of my mind.
"I know it's a great city there but I'm not sure Montreal will be there for many games to see me play."
In addition to Landry and Descoteaux the Canadiens have also assigned Eric Chouinard and Marc-Andre Thinel to Utah.
The Bulldogs also made some moves yesterday, reassigning forwards J.J. Hunter, Sean McAslan, Christian Larivee, Jeff Zehr and Bart Rushmer to the Columbus Cottonmouths of the East Coast Hockey League.
That brings them down to 15 forwards, eight defencemen and two goaltenders.
The Bulldogs are on the ice today, tomorrow and Friday at 10 a.m. at the Chedoke Twin-Pad Arena. They open the AHL regular season Monday at 5 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial.
Their home opener isn't until Friday, Oct. 18 when they entertain Syracuse.

From sebi over at fanhome:
6'0 190lbs Habs 2001 first-rounder (25th overall) Alexander Perezhogin has gone from 4th line duty to 2nd line responsibility on 4th-place Avangard Omsk's roster in the top league in Russia, the 'Superleague'. So far this year, he has scored 4 goals and assisted on 3 others, good for 7 points in 10 games. Perezhogin turned 19 on August 10th...
He was selected to play for the senior national team in a tournament in the Czech Republic in early September, and he fared well scoring a few goals from the fourth line and generally gathering praise for his speed, work ethic and finishing ability. Perezhogin was drafted after a quite successful (2000-01) season in the russian 'Upper League', where he scored 47 goals and 71 points in 41 games. He had a somewhat difficult season in 2001-02 as he battled a knee injury, posting a more modest 14 goals and 24 points in 19 games in the 'Upper League'.
For comparison purposes, Ilya Kovalchuk scored 25 goals and 56 points in 39 games in his draft year (2000-01) in this same Upper League.

<<Do you live in Russia? >> Yes. Moscow, Russia. October, 10. No points for future Habs "Soviet Wings"-"SeverStal" 2:1 Korneev in top pair of Wing's defenders. And, IMHO, one of the best def in team. I hope, he dressed Hab's uniform at next , or after next season. Strong def with good attacking and protective skills. "Dynamo"-"Red Army" (both Moscow) 4:0 "Neftehimik"-"Avangard" 4:2 It's really wondering ! But Alex looks good. But at october, 13 be a match "Korneev vs Perezhogin" "Soviet Wings" make visit to Omsk. 05.10.2002 In interview for a local newspaper Alex says what not planning to go to Montreal at near future. I hope, he change his point of view after this season. what your think about Hossa-Ribeiro-Perezhogin ?
