Well alittle more complicated... ice Caps sign him to a AHL contract, so Montreal will lose his rights and he is free to sign with another team unless they sign him to a ELC..unlikely Never saw him play so no idea about him.. Scouting reports say he's a defensive defence who plays the body..no offensive game. Ice caps have like 6 RD and 1 LD.... Morgan Ellis did well last season on his off wing...but still disportionate amount of right handed shots

This is an AHL deal with the Ice Caps, so he will technically be an NHL free agent when August 15th rolls around (our deadline to sign him to an NHL deal). This gives the Habs a chance to see him play in the AHL (or ECHL depending on defender depth, and we have a lot of RD's in the AHL right now) without burning one of their 50 NHL contracts. They can always sign him to an NHL deal at any time going forward, as can any other team. The latter is unlikely, so this is not a high risk move. He is a big, defensive first defender. So a good type of defender to see how he adapts at the next level. Didier is not a prospect you hear much about, partly because he was in the NCAA for the last four years and also since as a defensive defender he doesn't put up any big numbers that draw the stats-following crowd to him. OOPS - JJ beat me to it, likely while I was typing lol.

Sorry, thought implied through the article that yes it's an AHL deal. I like it though. Low risk, high reward.

I was thinking that you guys must use the same research bureau.
We sure get into the weeds, hey?

Twitter feed gave me the Didier thing. The draft eligible players of note have come from doing searches for '2015 nhl mock draft' etc.

Try this weed on for size...he only scored four goals in four years of NCAA, three In this past year, and I was watching one of those games on TV when he scored. Both JJ and I did mention something that bears watching. Almost all our D prospects are RD. Bennett is pretty well the only LD. Guys are going to be on their wrong side unless they sign some LDs for the AHL.

I think Berg wants to corner the market on RHD's. Once he has them all he can trade a few and ask a King's ransom.

Thx for the article willie!! I don't expect much improvement this upcoming season. I think they will have to sign 2 or 3 veteran left handed defence on a AHL deal. We don't have a lot of scoring coming from the blueline so one needs to be offensively capable. We are probably going to sign couple of veteran forwards on AHL deals as well to help out with leadership..Not sure if the plan is to play Hudon as the 1 center or not so maybe another scoring center .... Veteran goalie maybe so Fugale can start in the ECHL? Carr - Hudon- Scherbak Bournival - Dumont- Andrighetto XXXX- McCarron- Crisp XXXX -Gregoire- Fournier Sorkin Dietz-XXXX XXXX-Bennett Ellis- Lernout Condon-XXXX ECHL Bramptom Beast........McNally, Bozon, Thrower, Didier, Macmillan, Fucale Lol defence looks real weak..maybe it will be another long season

Scherbak can't play in the AHL yet.

He may be able to. He's a December 30, 1995 birthday, which means that as of Jan 1st 2016, he'd be an overager. If he'd been born 2 days later, he'd have to play another year in the Dub. NWT can probably confirm that, but I think that's correct. It's odd in a way that our first rounders from two separate years, both can join the pro ranks in the same year, but that is the case.
Course, if I'm wrong, I'll eat my licorice hat.

Scherbak can't play in the AHL yet. I wouldnt be so certain.....according to every media report ive read(including the one Willie Dog linked in his post) he will be in the AHL www.thetelegram.com/Sports/IceCaps/2015-06-11/article-4177895/IceCaps%26rsquo%3B-2015-16-lineup-taking-shape/1"Of the 21 players, nine will be professional rookies, including 2014 first-round draft pick Nikita Scherbak, considered by many to be the Habs’ top prospect and a player expected to mount a decent challenge for an NHL berth at training camp. Memorial Cup champion and all-star Michael McCarron, a six-foot-six forward, is another Montreal first-rounder (2013) about to turn pro, while Canadian world junior goaltender Zach Fucale is also ready to make the step up from juniors." www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/canadiens-remain-a-few-pieces-short-of-perennial-contender-status/article24423002/"Perhaps Galchenyuk is an in-house answer, and perhaps 19-year-old Nikita Scherbak, a 2014 first-round pick, will provide a dash of elite offensive skill on the wing when he turns pro this fall." www.thespec.com/opinion-story/5607289-bulldogs-more-than-the-end-of-an-era/"Had they remained, Bulldogs fans would have seen an influx of talent this fall. Zach Fucale, starting goalie on the gold medal Canadian Jr. squad. Two first round picks in Nikita Scherbak and Mike McCarron. Continued maturing of Charles Hudon and Sven Andrighetto. Fans in St. John's will see all that."

Maybe the rules are different for Russians, but for North American skaters (At least) you have to be 20 before can play. Case in point, Fucale. He's been playing a full 'jr career' to this point. He'll be in St. John's next year.

By what date do you have to be 20?
For the draft for example you have to be 18 by Sept 15. For the WJC you have to be 19 before Jan 1.
