That offside call negating Nashville's goal was absurd. It's one thing if the call was completely blown, but how often do refs really miss an offside?
This was a call that to the naked eye looked onside or at least close enough.... the only question being if the tip of his right skate left the ice. Seriously? This is what we're doing? In real time this was one of those "in the flow" plays at the blueline that happen multiple times a game. It's hockey for Pete's sake.
Replay should be used very narrowly in hockey for plays in tight of the goal, to determine if a player kicked the puck, etc. but to rewind the tape to see if the zone entry was offside, which could have occurred a minute before the goal, and then overturn a goal when it was ever so close and impossible to assess without going frame by frame.... so bad.

How many leagues let their championship be decided by such poor officials, on and off the ice? The "offside" goal, the non call on Crosby's interference. It may take a little courage to call a penalty on Crosby in Pittsburgh but it looks like NHL referees don't have it.

I turned the game off after the first. Sorry NHL, if that is the cream of your officiating crop, you are so far off the mark. The weather is nice outside, I have better things to do.
Still hope the Preds can pull it off.

Are hockey players coached to glide over the blueline? Seriously, I want to know. Because if you are skating full stride, it is impossible to have two skates on the ice coming across the blueline when you receive a pass. I am not so bewildered by the use of video review on off sides calls. We have the refs to thank for that who totally blew the Matt Duchene offsides last year. If this is the way the rule is going to be applied, I am good with it. But what infuriates me with NHL video review is the poor quality of the angles, picture frames, etc. How many times are we watching a review on a 4K telecast in HD, and the review is blurry?? How does that happen? I keep harping back to other sports, specifically tennis. The technology is there to determine if a single millimeter of a curved ball touches a line, but the NHL can not determine if a player's foot is lifted, if a puck crosses a line, etc ... It baffles me. The offside problem is pretty simple to solve. Re-write the definition of offside to be that a part of the player has to be behind the plane of the leading edge of the blueline. The goal issue is easy too. If golf can track a golf ball in flight, and tennis can track a tennis ball travelling at 158km/hr, then hockey can track a galvanized piece of rubber and have sensors in the goal posts (or something) which can tell if the puck in a goalie's glove is behind the line.

But Skilly, that would mean that people like Bettman and Colon Campbell have to actually care. Which means the owners have to care. Good luck with that.

The rule is stupid. I don't know why the the rule is that the skate on the outside of the blue line needs to be touching the ice before the puck crosses the line. Seems a bit of a stretch, like you said Skilly. The player clearly had one skate outside the blueline when the puck crossed, and that should be plenty. By the letter of the rule, you could argue otherwise but even then I didn't think the video was conclusive enough to overturn the call on the ice that the play was onside.

You'd probably get half the people saying it's offside and half saying its onside which is a pretty good definition of inconclusive. I call it a rip-off.

Ron MacLean says Pens got every break in the book in the first period Glad to hear it ... Had to view it after reading your comment ... he also did a montage of PK Subban highlights later that he couldn't provide commentary for ... I don't think he prepared for it and the way it came across was the like damage control ... The NHL standard of one-set-of-rules-for-Sydney and one-set-of-rules-for-everyone-else is nothing new, but it still undermines the integrity of the game ... Cheers.

Still hope the Preds can pull it off. I, too, agree to the notion of getting outside. Much less frustrating. Better for you. Plus outside is where barbecue happens. As for the game itself, I more or less am in agreement with what everyone else here has been saying (aren't I interesting...). That offside call was bogus, and I don't see how Crosby gets away with an elbow like that. Well, I do see why, but that doesn't make it right. NHL officiating continues to be embarrassingly bad.

If tonight's game contains the same nonsense, you can bet Laviolette will incur a fine with his post-game comments...
As far as offside goes...IMO, as long as the player has part of one skate on the ice, or in the air, behind the d-zone edge of the blue line, it should be good.
Very easy to use computer-generated lines a la tennis and football, as Skilly has pointed out.
After all, as long as a player has "control" of the puck, he can have BOTH skates COMPLETELY over the line before the puck crosses.
Yet the league splits hairs on the play in question here...

Stopped watching after the 1st again. Preds dominating possession, but they lack scoring punch. Sure enough, 3rd period rolls around and Rinne just isn't doing the job. Laviolette pulls him for Saros. I'm really curious who he starts in the next game. I'd start Saros because Rinne has gotten worse with each series and I think the team is losing confidence in him. If Saros gets hot for 4 games, that's all they need.

Dunno about you guys, but besides the fact that the Habs aren't in it anymore, I just don't have a lot of interest in the games. I don't find a lot of excitement or beauty in the game in general any more. When the Stanley Cup trail turns into a game of attrition, what does it really mean? The team with the best trainers and pain drugs wins? Watching classic games from the 70's and 80's, despite the fact the players are faster etc. now, are much more entertaining. There's more skill exhibited and much more style. What has happened to the game that's taken all that away, (besides Bettman)?

Too much renovation involved...lost prime seating revenue. 2. Should happen--Ensure the game is called properly...at all times. Use video review/coach's challenge for missed blatant penalties. Keep tabs on refs who miss obvious calls...and fine the "repeat official offenders"--heavily. Funny how a lot of intentional infractions are ignored as the playoffs unfold....but an unintentional puck-over-the-glass is automatic....even in Game 7 OT, Stanley Cup Finals. Something wrong with that situation, IMO.

Rinne reverting back to his regular season form.
So far in the series, scoring chances are 44-20 in favor of the Preds. Murray has been solid, Rinne has been bad. That's pretty much the story.
Oh, and Subban continues to be a stud. Winning defensive puck battles, and dominating possession (62% Corsi) while matching up against the Pens top forwards.

The stats put a lie to the narrative that Subban is a selfish risk taker that is going to cost his team.

That game-tying goal that Rinne let in reminded me of Price against the Rangers in Game 6. I think this is the case of Rinne being overworked and a fresher Matt Murray is coming into form.

I think Laviolette has to put in Saros for the Preds to have a chance. A team with confidence in their goalie can achieve much. Still....no Johansen. That's a crippling injury.

With about 3:00 left in a 5-1 game, Cullen with a deliberate gloved punch to a Preds' player's face.
Will "message sending" be enforced? Ha!
Laviolette showing faith in Rinne, and it paid off tonight!
Subban leading all skaters with 25:53 of ice.

Subban guaranteed a win tonight, and they went out and took it. 40k people in the streets for Alan Jackson, and a loud rink for the game. Two habs fans in the historic whites in the stands.

I agree with Simpson on this one. Penguins with cheap hits, and late hits. Predators are upset because, well, they already lost Johansen to that kind of play.

Laviolette played Subban the most tonight 25+ minutes. Josi was at 23, Ellis and Ekholm with 22 each. Lavey seems to have changed PK's game quite a bit. He rarely rushes anymore and doesn't often dipsy doodle in the offensive end either. Or Subban has adjusted his game to suit Laviolette's wishes. It's amazing what a good boss can accomplish. It helps to not be at loggerheads with your best skater.

MT (you know my strong feelings about his lack of coaching ability) wanted PK not to rush as much or dipsy doodle, wanted him to adjust his game, and many people thought PK was being stifled. now PK is playing more the way the Habs wanted him to play and he has a great coach or PK is wonderful because he was willing to adjust? I admit the loggerheads thing (not that MT was a loggerhead . . . OK, he was) . . . getting along with the coach makes a big difference for sure. PK has matured and is doing what the coach wants . . . good on him . . . too bad he couldn't/wouldn't when he was here.

I think PK was rushing a little more in earlier series. He's moving the puck with passes, while still demonstrating his mobility within his own end.
The loss of Johansen presents a big challenge for the Preds to overcome. Their top four are making a concerted effort to cover the middle of the ice imo. Their gap control is pretty amazing. Pittsburgh had a PP at one point last night, and couldn't even get the puck in the Preds zone.

Good I hope PK keeps going after Crysbaby and Malkin.. the crap the pens are getting away with is a disgrace. The NHL should be ashamed but like the commissioner and the board of govenors... there is none.
