Jack Johnson official to Pens. 5 years and about $16 million total. Perfect. Another great move by Jim Rutherford.

Kind of agree with Brian Burke. Because of McDonagh's style of play this will be a good deal for about 4 of those years. I'm thinking 3 of those years. Yzerman is really playing the 'all in' card now. I'd be picking up the phone and asking about Ryan Callahan and Libor Hajek or Brett Howden or Alexander Volkov or a combination of those guys. Yep.

Gallant will love this kid. Any odds on him scoring 20 next season?

Pateryn 3 years and $6.75 million total with Wild. Sounds like the cost for a solid #5 who can occasionally cover for a #4.

Definitely something of a shift today. Tavares was the only UFA to get max term. JVR got 5 years. Lots of guys getting 3, maybe 4. In previous years teams are backing up the truck and throwing max term at JVR. I think Vancouver will regret giving 4 years to each of Beagle and Roussel. Beagle is 34! They've got cap money to burn, but $3 million a piece on top of that is large money for 4th liners.

He didn't care for the 4th year, but understood that prices on July 1 for UFA's are like flowers on Valentines day. You're going to overpay.

I did not think Schenn was playing that poorly last season in Arizona. It surprises me that he is basically playing for the league minimum. He was probably never as good as people thought when he was drafted, but still he feels like a textbook example of how a club (Toronto) really mishandled his development badly. Speaking of Anaheim, before this minor transaction, it had struck me that they have been very quiet. I know they are top heavy up against the cap and maybe the plan is to promote some kids this fall rather than chasing free agents or wheeling and dealing via trades. But still, the Kings are better than before; Vegas looks primed to be good again; San Jose is solid; Edmonton should improve if the blue line stays healthy and Talbot is not below average. Is Anaheim planning to add goals to keep up with their lodge brothers in 2018-19 or quietly emphasize youth with the recognition that their vet core is not good enough to carry them beyond the first round of playoffs anyway? If it is the latter plan, then I guess Murray will not be circling back around for Pacioretty.

Anaheim's a puzzle. Their ouster in the playoffs highlighted that some of their core pieces are aging quickly. Kesler, Perry and Getzlaf are all from the 2003 draft. The league has sped up and Kesler is the only one of the 3 with natural speed. They've all played a lot of hockey and the bodies may be wearing out. I wouldn't bet often against Bob Murray, though.

Calgary snags James Neal. 5 years, $5.75 aav. Probably too many years, but the dollar figure isn't terrible. He'll likely earn the value for 3 years.

DeHaan goes to the Canes. 4 years at $4.55M. Less money than Alzner.

Less term too.
Were no contenders willing to pay this kind of money for DeHaan? I thought after many seasons with the Islanders that he may have been trying figure out how to taste some post-season action.

Bergevin said term was an issue with signing DeHaan. Doesn’t compute. A five year contract for a mobile, better than average d-man at 27 years of age should be ok. He probably nets more in Carolina, so dollars might have to be higher but the term shouldn’t be an issue.
(why I have trouble believing Berg’s excuses. They rarely make sense).

It's certainly a contradiction, but perhaps he's been told no more than 3 years on ufas this summer.

It's certainly a contradiction, but perhaps he's been told no more than 3 years on ufas this summer. maybe he and the other GMs are starting to think CBA negotiations and don't want to be on the hook for salary during a lock-out. I know we don't want to over pay for free agents, but other teams are doing it....maybe it's time for our "Management team" to look at the current economics in the NHL and try to adjust their thinking. Alzner. we do overpay.

A buyout of Alzner, something I've been on board for since January, would be refreshing. That would be Bergevin admitting a mistaking and doing the right thing by fixing it. What's the point? We have 18 million of cap space and we are not going to use it this summer so why waste the cap hit? Might as well suck it up. I agree. I don't want Alzner's cap hit hurting us when we're a good team. That won't be soon, so might as well live with his contract as it is. In 4 years it's over. If we had bought him out, he's be hurting us until Kotkaniemi is 27... heck, his cap hit might force us to give him a bridge deal instead of a long-term deal.

The road to Jack Hughes is paved by Alzner, Benn, Schlemko and the like. I would give each of them 20+ minutes per game plus some power play duty. If we buy out Alzner, I hope it's in 2020 or so. We won't be contending before then by the looks of it.
