Watching Canes / Bolts while I still have Centre Ice.
Impressive 2nd period by Carolina. They've scored to draw within one and out shot TB 17-0. I know it's early but I couldn't imagine the Bolts of last season going without shot for an entire period.

Carolina is tough to play against. And I anticipate that they will need this territorial dominance and intensity of effort all season because the Achilles heel of this team is likely Mrazek.

Wings beat Stars 4-3. Mantha with all 4 goals for Detroit. I thought I was watching a broadcast from the sixties. Red Wing announcers referred to him several times as " the big Frenchman".

Kenny Holland had a terrible time negotiating with Mantha two years ago. His contract is up after this season. I am not sure Yzerman will have an easy time this go around.

The broadcast guys love him & are expecting big things this year. But I was just surprised at the use of that term.

Leafs lose, which is always nice. I missed the first period. I got a couple of texts raving about how Toronto just dominated early. The portion of the game that I watched was a pretty strong dose of hard, heavy, smart St. Louis hockey. Andersen was not very good.
I flipped over a few times to the Buffalo-Columbus game and frankly the Sabres were a total no-show and yet walked out of the building with a point. Buffalo's power play continues to be otherworldly hot. I hope the boys cut it with the crap and stay out of the box on Wednesday.

Carolina is steamrolling Florida in the first period, 4-0. Luckily for Panthers there are vast swathes of empty seats incapable of booing them.
Man, I hate those Islanders uniforms tonight.

After scoring only 7 all of last season, James Neal now has 6 goals in 3 games, including 4 tonight.

How is Florida viable as a franchise? Is this just Bettman being stubborn? It's clear that the the fans don't care.

Yes, I think that Bettman is stubborn. Arizona has been a fiasco for most of the 21st century and the league at the his behest has loaned (not talking about the revenue sharing mechanism that has lent a hand to quite a few American franchises, but rather outright emergency loans) tens of millions to Arizona that have yet to be paid back.
As for the market in south Florida, it is pretty evident that their big off-season of spending on UFAs did not move the needle in terms of season ticket sales. They may see an uptick in walk up sales during the season if they start putting together a bunch of wins, but that is a tough way for a franchise to be successful and sustainable (heck, even ask Ottawa what it is like to have a smallish season ticket base). In reality, the Panthers ownership has a sweetheart deal with the municipality/county whereby they collect a healthy percentage of the cut from concerts and other events in that arena. Therefore, the Panthers always lose money while the owner manages to avoid absorbing a true loss.

The steamrollers gave up 50 SOG. Reimer won the game for them tonight. And goal was supposed to be their weak spot. Bob sucked for the Panthers.

Some people are predicting Carolina as top seed in the Metro. At first I was a little sceptical but Pittsburgh is on the downside so if Washington falters, it might actually come to fruition.

The storm clouds seem to be rolling in on the Penguins' season. Rutherford may not be able to do much besides waiting. They do not have enough prospects or good enough kids to find any outside help. And the bad contracts on roster are his own fault and no one around the league is lining up to help him out.
Washington and Carolina look very good. I have not watched any Rangers or Flyers' games thus far so I cannot comment much on them. The Islanders look like they will be fortunate if they can hang out around the playoff bubble. Columbus and New Jersey do not seem to have NHL goalies. I hope that the Devils, the Jackets, and the Penguins are not too disastrously bad because that could put some crucial points in the pockets of clubs like the Rangers, Flyers, and Islanders.

The Rutherford touch is finally showing results in Pittsburgh. I'll take that along with the 2 Cups in the trophy case. I'm sure most here would accept that as well. With the exception of Phil Kessell, the man most responsible for the 2 cups is Ray Shero. Rutherford has lucked into 3 cups. He has amazing luck with other teams suffering significant injuries before his team plays them, in 2006 and 2016. Rutherford's deal for Kessell was a key one and I'll grant him that. Since then, instead of the window being open for a few more years, he's run the team into the ground. Don Waddell has walked into the same thing. Ron Francis did the majority of the grunt work in Carolina. The core players in Raleigh were all acquired by Francis.

Ouch, that is harsh. But, then again, Ottawa is putting a really awful product on the ice.
I have to figure that Dorion knows that the Sens are going to be absolutely brutal this season.
I wonder who will be the first coach fired this season? If I had to bet, I would say Hynes with an outside chance it could be Montgomery.

I find this a bit surprising, given the hype machine. I bet that their offense "exploded" in each and every one of those 24 games.

I bet most Leaf fans actually know they've been playing at a sub .500 level. It's the media that's deflecting the deserved criticism. Babcock isn't looking like an all-star anything. We know he can coach great talent to victory, because he's shown that (course, so could a dozen other coaches), but how does he handle a less than all-star squad?
