Nice one about keeping Babs another five years. The defense is bad, and those that thought Barrie could fix that haven't watched him play. Their larger problem defensively is that they don't play in structured 5 man units. Their forwards bail on defensive duties and cherry pick. More than that, they're a one dimensional team. They can't/won't lean on you. If you're fast enough to beat them to pucks, you won't pay for retrieval. Until they fix those two issues, they're not going anywhere. Would it be more about ... dare I say ... attitude ... Cheers. Button calling it a code-red. Dubas has to look behind the bench. "wrong system" etc.

Oilers played run and gun in the season, but by 84 they realized they were going to have to play at both ends to win it all.

"wrong system" etc. I can't be sure of this, but I think Mike Babcock might be using the same system he had in Detroit but he may not have the same buy-in from the Leafs as he did from the Red Wings ... that said, it could very well be as you cited before in that the Leafs aren't playing effectively as a 5-man unit ... Alex Ovechkin mentioned that the Leafs would have to change their way of playing if they wanted a chance at the Cup ... I listened to him again and I got the impression that he was referring to the players and not so much the system ... either way, it doesn't matter ... keep the controversy hanging over the Leafs, keep the team distracted, and keep them playing .500-hockey ... Cheers.

They Leafs need a Brendan Gallagher and a Shea Weber type player at each position. They really screwed the pooch with that Barrie trade. Kadri was there Gallagher. But it all started with the Tavares signing. Kadri was a perfect #2 for them. If they wanted Johnny that bad they should of traded a package around Matthews for OEL from Arizona.

"wrong system" etc. I can't be sure of this, but I think Mike Babcock might be using the same system he had in Detroit but he may not have the same buy-in from the Leafs as he did from the Red Wings ... Cheers. Babcock had Lidstrom and Rafalski in their primes in Detroit, and Datsyuk and Zetterberg in their primes up front. I'm beginning to question just how good a coach Babcock is and how much of his success is tied to going to teams that had sufficient talent to start with. I think he's a fine coach but has some 'old school' tendencies and may not be suited to coaching a youngish team that needs a different hand. It's a matter of getting the kids to believe and he doesn't seem to have done it. Dubas may not have helped (dumping McElhenney last year), acquiring Ceci (OMG) and no doing a great job with contract negotiations, but the Leafs have a decent talent base. They should be much better than they are. PS. As an aside, let's not anoint Berube as the god of coaches yet (like some Leaf pundits appear to be doing). Binnington went on quite a role when Berube took over and, (cough, ahem) those two positions have a very high correlation.

Said that the Blues had a goal tending problem and they fixed that.

Washington players really distinguishing themselves these pat few games. Ovechkin leaves his feet to drill Drouin, Panik slew foots Byron. And yesterday Garner Hathaway was penalized for spitting at a Ducks player. Bette be a suspension coming for that one.

Leipsic boarded someone on the Ducks to ignite that melee. Wilson also blew Deslauriers up and smartly Nico skated back to his bench.
The Capitals are very good and in addition they have a physical, nasty, borderline dirty edge. I would hate to try to beat them four times in the playoffs.

The full clip shows that the Ducks player sucker punched him while he couldn't defend himself - the ref had both his arms wrapped up. Certainly the wrong reaction, but I understand why he was p/o.

Meanwhile, in Leafland the Babcock watch continues. Vegas beats them 4-2 for their 6th loss in a row. Saw some highlights. Fleury with some excellent saves but Toronto isn't going to win many games if Spezza is their best forward.

I am absolutely loving all this panic Babcock talk on all the Toronto based sports networks right now. You build a team with 50% of your payroll on forwards that are relatively soft and don't care to play a team game unless its from the blueline in. Your Norris contending defenseman is being asked to play in situations that he is not good at because you let other guys walk and your Veznia caliber goalie is looking average because of the lack of support in front of him and the talking heads are blaming the coach?
What other coach is going to go in and make a noticeable difference when you have 8-9 really good players and the other 10-12 are fillers. I think you need to look past the bench and up to the pressbox to find the problem.

There are no fewer than six (6) videos on TSN about the Leafs' latest loss.

Mike Commodore is the happiest man alive. It's really too bad ... I think the Leafs will eventually figure this out and play a lot better ... not sure they're contenders, though ... I'm listening to TSN690 (Melnyk) and I hadn't realized that Colorado was hiding Tyson Barrie during last year's playoffs ... he's that bad defensively ... they still have to address their defensive issues, but the Leafs are financially handcuffed ... Cheers.

What about the boy wonder, Dubas?
He started the backup carousel by waiving McElhenny, he caved in to Nylander and he gave up their only forward with an edge - Kadri- for a dud like Barrie. He's got a lot to answer for.

Kadri is a 2 time 30 goal scorer that's signed until 2022 and plays with an edge the Leafs don't have. He moved him for Barrie who's been lousy & is UFA as well. When the season is done Barrie, Ceci & Muzzin could all be gone and the hunt for D will be on again.
