Friends just came back from Florida and they said there isn't a lot being said about the virus. I think the delay in the feds acknowledging it will cause a massive spike in their side. My concern is an influx of 'American Covid-19 refugees' showing up at our border. My friends said they weren't even asked about how they felt. I didn't follow the Roxham Road thing, I didn't even know it was a thing until I cam across it a few times. NOTHING on CBC or CTV Obviously that $600,000,000 to the media is paying big dividend for Trudeau. We only need to see what he wants us to see....

I have a bit too much time on my hands so I was reading about what was happening in china and as usual.....first up to post what may look like "chicken little" threads.
The only difference here, even my built-in-to-the-core pessimism and caution is WAY short of the results we are seeing.
Worse, I can't figure out what the future holds. Not even a bit. EVERYTHING is on the table with equal weight. From a "few month hiccup" to multi year recurring battle.
Folks, just remember to give the Chinese government a big thank you for all this....*spit*

I am just hoping it doesn't spread to panademic proportions here in North America. World death rate is 4%. Some countries higher rates than others? Puzzling. Canada is at 1% mortality rate, while Italy is 10%, Spain is 7% and Germany is half of us at .5%
Even at our low death rate by time multiply by high infection rate be many deaths. Canada has 2,800 cases as of midnight, last Wednesday we had 530 cases. So, it is growing fast. If we don't take these measusures seriously we will have over 10,000 infected by next Wednesday. Means 100 human lives. We can make a difference!!

Prior to that, only the confirmed numbers were being published. That's the main reason for the sudden hike. Another contributor is the fact that all the travelers and spring breakers have been returning lately. More testing has boosted the number as well. Yes, the virus is spreading but not as quickly as the numbers suggest at first glance, at least in Quebec. Edit: Source

We know who has died, and if it's likely due to Covid, but we don't really know what the denominator is. How are they tracking who has the disease? Especially if someone is asymptomatic. We keep hearing more than a few cases of people finding out they have the virus, but no symptoms at all. How many are there out there like that who will never know if they caught it or not and thus will never be part of the count? I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness...but I like accurate information.

The NHL has postponed the draft and that's a good call ... I'd be good with them canning the entire season, too, as far as that goes ... if they do return it won't be about the game, the fans, or the Cup, it will be about salvaging as much $ as they can ... I don't like thinking about it but can you imagine the NHL returning and two weeks later 20 new cases emerge .... the only thing they have in common is that went to the game ... fans should understand "voluntary assumption of risk" ... getting hit in the face by the puck is a risk you voluntarily take but this virus wouldn't be worth any risk ...
Cheers.

People need to start getting arrested for stupidity... This virus they say is twice as contagious as flu, 5 times for deadly with 3 times the incubation period. Going to be many deaths if cases mount. Shutting down pro sports was the right call. In 2 weeks it would have shut itself down as players would been infected. Resulting in NHL likely losing a couple of players. I hope we don't see NHL in August though. Just rather write this season off and go to short playoff system that is over in late July.

Cheers. I agree. To resume the season in any form is actually a serious logistical problem. They have to deal with all those different health authorities and the rules that they have imposed locally/regionally/nationally. Lock in the standings (based on win %) for draft purposes. Hold the draft virtually. Do your UFA thing sometime in the summer. Call it a season and plan to start fresh in the fall when there is at least a chance a new season can start again.

For me the NHL is going to follow whatever the NBA does.
NBA cancels, NHL cancels. NBA resumes in June with no fans, NHL does the same. NBA playoffs run into late summer in order to at least salvage TV money, NHL will have the incentive to chart a similar course.

So the Avs have the third official positive test (and unnamed player has recovered well).
So, maybe the league has issued a gag orders on teams naming individuals.
Is Dr. Recchi still their chief medical consultant?

The NBA is allowing teams to open their practice facilities on May 1 in states where the government permits it. This is a pretty significant signal that the league wants to start the process of readying players physically for a summer playoffs.
I am not quite sure how the teams based in states not easing some restrictions next week are going to feel about this.

I have always thought that the NHL is going to follow the cues of its richer cousin, the NBA, in choosing what to do (and what not to do) throughout this crisis. So my hunch is that Bettman will announce on Monday or Tuesday that he sees no harm in allowing practice facilities that are cleared to open to go ahead and open with clubs keeping the groups on the ice limited to 5-7 players at a time and the guys keeping two meters apart on the ice and in the room, etc.

I am not quite sure how the teams based in states not easing some restrictions next week are going to feel about this. Talk about creating an uneven playing field. A clear advantage to certain teams over others. And what about foreign players that have gone home and cannot return via non-existing international flights into the US? Interesting to see how this plays out and how (or if) the NHL responds. With tighter restrictions in Canada and with 7 teams in Canada including those provinces with the highest active cases, the NHL story is quite different. And the NHL has a lot of Europeans who have gone home, but that will also vary across teams too.

Jeje, John Scott said NHL mini-training camps will open June 1. That is insane. We're just barely unconfining people, I'm still not allowed to see another human being in person, other than at the grocery store or other essential service, I might well not be allowed to see my immediate family or close friends by summertime, high schools are definitely closed until September, I can't see how anyone could justify a professional sport training camp when such restrictions are still in place. Even if the league and PA just want to take any possible risk to make money, this would be a bad risk to take since it implicitly kills off the normal start to next season, and if anything untoward happens (like that outbreak of unvaccinated Penguin players) next season is a write-off until 2021.

Nope. NHL season is toast. They won't officially write it off for a while, but once we reach Italy-level fatalities in multiple NHL cities (in 2 to 4 weeks, I'd guess), even talk about sporting events will fade away. TBD TBD Check, confirmed for Quebec. Though I don't know why I wrote High Schoolers, I guess my subconscious knew that grade school is part kindergarten anyways, so I thought it might be required. (optional kindergarten is opening in a couple of weeks) Check. I'm 2 out of 4 at this point, with 4 out of 4 still possible. We'll know later if I should have done either of these things....

I can definitely understand them starting to at least plan it. My wife is a paramedic here in Toronto and I have been deemed essential (construction industry-water/wastewater) as well so we have both been working throughout. Obviously she is way more "front line" then anything I deal with but just as an example, I travel 2-3 times a week across Toronto and there are still thousands of vehicles on the road and week by week, day by day, I notice more and more cars. Yesterday I experienced my first traffic jam in 6 weeks. Anyway, on one of my sites, we have between 40-50 people that have been working full time, even Saturdays, this entire time. Sure, everyone is practicing social distancing and there are new protocols in place but regardless, all these people are living their own lives, getting groceries, gas, etc, etc and while crews have been separated to try and keep a potential infection from spreading among everyone, you still have people within close contact. It's inevitable and we have had no cases. I say this as you could consider this the same size of a hockey team. Further, I work for a large Engineering firm with over 2000 people plus my clients are the municipalities (Toronto, Halton, Peel, York, etc). All my contacts, no cases. Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying it isn't dangerous, again, my wife is seeing the affects on the front line, but based on real hard evidence, it doesn't appear to be as contagious as they feared. I'm not saying full stadiums but with the money involved, I can see ways that they can confirm players, staff, all required personal are clean and kept isolated as a team and play games. I would suggest they set up four sites based on divisions, play a mini round robin, determine a champion, then take the four division champs and determine a finals location. Not perfect but it can be done. And considering it's with no fans, it opens up the entire map for locations. Lots of secluded places have had no cases. I know TV staffing/production will also come in to play but if they ever figure it out and happen to be the first or only game in town, could you imagine the opportunity to spread the game all over the World?

(optional kindergarten is opening in a couple of weeks) a cynic might say that high school students can look after themselves while elementary students need a baby sitter of some sort . . . school is free daycare, so the parents can go back to work.

I don't know what to think... sending grade school kids back, on a voluntary basis, seems like a compromise to help get parents back in the workforce, while minimizing exposure...
The problem is that Covid isn't the only enemy, and I think Quebec has a lot of resources to help out kids which are set up through schools, so closing schools blocks access to a lot of other resources. There are a lot of sh!tty parents out there, and for those kids, school is a lifeline.
I'm more annoyed at home travel between regions is still blocked, as well as all socialization. I was hoping for .... something. I got nuthin.
I'm also a Quebec government employee, and as I've already said, we're horribly behind technologically and in terms of work organization, so teleworking isn't working out very well for me.

When I first heard that elementary kids only were going back my thought was that they may be more compliant & less apt to rebel against safety measures taken.
I did see a Quebec government official on CBC. He said they aren't married to this decision & will back away from it if necessary.
