Frankly, I don't see how hanging onto all those UFAs could be a winning strategy; none of them is improving, at best they maintain current production for the first couple of years, but after that it'll be downhill, and we'd only have improvement from KK and Suzuki and Romanov to try and become a better team... and while I think they will be good, I don't see us having much of a window to anything before Price and Weber are slowing down to such an extent that organic improvement won't keep up. Which is why I'd be happy to move Domi for a Petry-replacement, and move Petry for various futures if we can't get help up front for him, and only keep 2 of the 3 forwards. The flat cap might have some weird effects though, making guys accept shorter-term deals in the hope of cashing in as UFAs in 2-3 years when perhaps more money is available. I'd move Weber before Petry... Petry has shown he can be a #1 when Weber was out, Petry is a better skater. Well, for that Petry would need to re-signed, for starters, and with Weber's contract and the C on his sweater, I just don't see him getting moved. Petry, even more if there's retention on his contract, could fetch us some interesting assets.

Willie, wow, those are some curious trades on that website. Montreal is getting fleeced in the Edmonton deal. That Russian is nothing special and Montreal has a tonne of LHD prospects, so even if Juulsen is the bigger question mark because of health, at worst those two cancel each other out. So essentially the trade is Danault for Puljujarvi. Maybe at the deadline if Bergevin cannot get Danault signed and the Habs fall out of the race, the trade would not be utter madness. But right now, in the off-season, that is crazy. Puljujarvi has 37 points in 139 games and looked lost.
Than, at the other end of the spectrum, this dude absolutely robs Vegas. He gets Krebs and Vegas' first rounder for Petry? Man, that is quite a return.
The San Jose deal made me chuckle. I know he was just trying to come up with something for each Pacific division club, but really why in the world would Montreal want Sorensen. He is not young. He is not good. He is smallish. If Bergevin wants to do something with his 2021 third rounder, he should offer sheet Fogele, Virtanen, or Lemieux. At least those guys are hard and heavy, even if they are not world beaters.

I like to compare how GM's handle their affairs. For example, in a bid to improve his defense, Bergie signed Joel Edmundson to a 4 year, $3.5MM deal. Tonight it was announced that Steve Yzerman's Red wings acquired Marc Staal and a 2nd round pick in 2021 for future considerations. We have to wait to find out what those future considerations are, but it sounds very much like a CAP deal. The Rangers needed room to sign RFA DeAngelo. Staal has 1 year left on a $5.7MM deal, but $1MM of that was already paid out in a signing bonus, so his actual salary is 4.2MM, but the CAP hit is $5.7MM. If Montreal had done something like that (without knowing if anything other than a 5th round pick is going back), they'd have Staal instead of Edmundson, and for 1 year, not 4. In 1 year, you will likely have a much better idea of how Struble, Norlinder, Harris, Fairbrother, Leguerrier, Juulsen, Fleury, etc (did I leave anyone out?) are panning out. I doubt there's much difference in ability between Staal and Edmundson. It's merely a matter of timing and asset management. Yzerman now has a year with a veteran dman, and a 2021 2nd rounder for what is likely a low draft pick. There are a number of defense prospects in Detroit's pipeline and another year is about right for them to know more about those guys.
That's a good way to use your CAP space. A different comparison will be the Allen deal. Bergevin got Allen the same way, and he too has only 1 year left on his contract. Berg paid a 3rd rounder for picking up Allen. Yzerman picked up a veteran defenseman, plus a 2nd round pick to easy the Rangers' CAP pain, though we don't yet know what the RW's cost is. Allen's CAP hit is $1.35MM less than Staal's.

Last night's game, they were saying Jersey offering 18th overall for young player with control. Wonder if Domi is a fit?

It could be. I think New Jersey would have to add a little something to balance the scales. Domi is a productive offensive player in the league and the Devils would not have any impediment to getting him signed.
Again, for all the teams interested in Domi (and I am sure there are quite a few), the central question is whether they see him as a centre or winger or some kind of a polifunctional forward. Clubs that believe in him as a centre and project him as a good 2C are going to be willing to pay more for him than clubs that are not quite sure how he slots in.

What I don't like is that Bergevin doesn't really understand how much he's helping other teams by taking on their CAP issues. Allen certainly fits the bill for the Habs needs. But the big point is that he freed up $4.5MM for Armstrong. That in itself has substantial value. We saw it yesterday with Yzerman taking on one year of Marc Staal and getting a 2nd round pick out of it (caveat: We don't know what the future considerations are, but those usually aren't expensive). I give you some CAP Advil, you give me some assets. When I fix your Allen problem, you should give ME a 3rd round pick, not the other way around. When Carolina gave Dubas some CAP morphine, it cost the Leafs a first rounder. When Caroline propped up a CAP ladder so that Stan Bowman could climb out of his hole, the Canes were able to pay just a 2nd and 3rd round pick for Teuvo Terevainen. But when the Habs use their CAP space, they PAY a 3rd rounder for Allen, they PAY a 2nd rounder for Drouin and they pick up only a 3rd line winger (Armia). Allen's fine, Drouin is ok (don't laugh) and Armia is allright as well, but Berg should have gotten more, a lot more.

On 690 yesterday, Bergevin said he willing to move his first pick and prospects. Kind of opposite what he always says. Sounds like he is gearing up for a run at a Laine type.
His first pick, and prospects? Combined with rumours of Domi, or Danault available, according to who you listen to. Could be big draft trade coming.
Which, giving his prospect depth, debate in draft thread of a Zary. Schneider or Amirov type our likely pick, be a good decision.

If we get Laine type, then Caufield in spring will make interesting top 6. With emerge of Suzuki and Koktaniemi team could be fun again.
Bergs will keep 2 up of present top 6. Domi I think will go in the trade. Gallagher he has shown before partial to character and hard work. Solid chance he will lock him up long term. 5 years I predict.
Drouin is likely unmovable. So, he will stay. Tatar is on bubble. Likely keep him until Caufield is closer to be ready. But Tatar will bring solid return at deadline and his 5 million could be used to cover increases to other 3 free agents.
Danault line will make great 3rd line. Excellent speed and defense and capable scores. At least until trade deadline. For 4th line I would like to get a Lowry or Copp from Winnipeg. They need cap help and we have many mid round picks. One of them would add size and hits and defense. Also maybe 3rd line center in future, if work out well. In case Poehling fails.
Sounds like Edmundson they will try for Chiarot 2.0. Use Weber to cover up his deficiencies and learn from. Making a #6 a #4 d-man. Or a #5 a #3. Romanov likely will make the cut. Hopefully, Juulsen also. But health is major concern with him. Keep Mete and Fleury in case he goes down again. Kulak either traded or in Laval for depth, as chance his 1.8 m will not be claimed in waivers.
Price in net, Allen taking some of pressure off of him.
So, there is my 2021 Montreal Canadiens
