More reaction. Awaiting to see if the second is conditional (2022 if the Oil don’t have to give it to Chicago as part of Keith deal) or 2023.

Barron is a great young RHD. Guhle’s partner in first WJC. A first round pick and a second. Great return. Too good to refuse.

A second rounder is a great return for Kulak. In the various Oilers games that I have watched this season, Lagesson did not look like a NHL d-man.

I am surprised Colorado would give up Barron and a second for Lehkonen. I have not been eager at all to deal Lehkonen (he will be harder to replace than some realize), but this return is too good to say no.

Lagesson has struggled to stick with the Oil on the left side. I guess the Habs can give him more opportunities over the next 20 games and see if they qualify him or else just treat him like a throw in to get the second round pick from Edmonton.

Habs blueline is getting bigger. And more mobile and more puck skill. Horton have mentioned how they want the team to play in the future and they are picking up pieces that fit that design.

Montreal retains 50% of Lehkonen’s salary. Off the books at the end of the year anyway.

Great deal with the Avs... This Makes the Avs much harder for The Oil and Flames to play against.

I am impressed with Hughes and Gorton so far. In the last month and a week they have gotten:
2 first round picks (Florida, Calgary) 3 very good prospects (Barron, Smilanic, Heineman) 2 second round picks (Edmonton, Colorado) 2 4th round picks 1 5th round pick
For Kulak, Lekhonen, Chariot and Toffoli.
All of who I consider replacable on the free agent market or we could always re-sign in July.

Some details about Lagesson. With the Habs playing tonight, he won’t play today. Will they play him in all but one of their 19 remaining games after tonight? He might be very much a throw in if he is going to be a UFA due to not enough games played.

A second rounder is a great return for Kulak. In the various Oilers games that I have watched this season, Lagesson did not look like a NHL d-man. I've only seen him a few times and had the same impression. Hes 26 and only has 57 games at the NHL level. His hockeydb profile indicates that he's bounced around the SEL too.

Was Subbans cap hit so extremely large that no one could fit it in their budget? I know he isn't living up to his contract now but thought maybe someone might bite.

Come on LA, don’t give up on the Habs yet. Make Hughes an offer for Petry lol.

I'll take hope in the Barron acquisition.. take the word of those on the board more knowledgeable then I. I'm pretty disappointed to see Lehks go. We watched this guy develop (at times painfully) and now that he is in his prime as really an elite bottom 6 defensive player who can easily play on the second, we let him go. I hope we don't regret this. He was never the problem and we still have some highly paid deadweight on our wings (Drouin,Armia)

An amazingly big haul for turning the team into a younger, faster, more skilled team over time and also adding nice picks over a few drafts to keep adding to the pipeline to keep it going. Superb work for his first trade deadline.

Yeah, maybe Hughes could care less if Lagesson is a RFA or UFA because even if he is a RFA, qualifying him would put Montreal on the hook for a one-way contract for a guy who is arguably not good enough to play in the NHL.
I have no problem giving him some games now, but unless he looks significantly better than he did with the Oilers then the whole issue of getting him 18 more games to retain his rights is essentially a non-issue.

The happiest guy here is obviously Nick Paul. He gets moved from Ottawa and their cheapskate owner to TB where the goal every year is to do everything you can to win a Cup. In other words, Paul is going to a professionally run team that has the highest ambitions. 20% bump in net pay, too.

I hate letting go of Lehkonen, but Barron, as a RD, has to be seen as a core piece in the short term. Barron is also closer to the age of our "new" core - Suzuki, Caufield, Romanov being the key guys there. I'm hoping Primeau can get there, too, but I'm not as hopeful.

Then again, sometimes players just need some ice time to develop. I've come to think of ice time as an asset. Petry, Kulak, Byron, developed here because they got it (and weren't getting it elsewhere). Dauphin, Clague and Pitlick might fit the same mold. Lagesson as well, ?

I am excited about Barron.
On the NHL Network, Lawton was just saying that he cannot fathom how a team would give up a second rounder for Kulak. Of course, Lawton was mild compared to EJ Hradek's tirade about Ottawa taking Hamonic full freight and actually handing Vancouver a third round pick to bout.
