Not speculation. Markstrom traded to NJ for a top 10 protected 2025 first round pick and Kevin Bahl. Also, Calgary retains about a 1/3 of Markstom's salary. Once again I have to wonder about Conroy. The Devils need Markstrom like a thirsty man in the Empty Quarter needs water. And while I like Bahl, that pick is likely to be anywhere from 15 to 24. And then on top of that, he retains salary! I would have asked for more if I had to retain salary (to make the deal work CAP wise for NJ). Get Alexander Holtz thrown in. He's not on Jersey's 'keep at all costs' list.

Calgary wants badly to have a 2025 first round pick, especially since Florida is going to be a lottery team and will retain their 2025 pick, making Calgary's pick, Montreal's. Yum.

That is why Treliving bailed- now it looks like Conroy's fault.

Maybe there are factors of which we are unaware, but at face value, he's not getting what he should for Lindholm, especially Tanev and now Markstrom. I'd sure like to make a deal with him for that #9 pick.

Wow. Kings cutting their losses on PLD without having to go the buyout route. Overall the PLD acquisition was a huge fail. Blake has to be on a short leash after this one.

Good. I don’t like Washington.
I also love that so much action is taking place to spite Bettman. Mind you, with the Oilers on the comeback trail, Bettman may have lost interest himself.

The Kings and the Capitals are both no better than bubble teams in 2024-25. It just seems as though those are two organizations stuck in the middle. In the case of Los Angeles, Blake is trying to save his job and missing the playoffs would guarantee he will be fired; in the case of Washington, Leonsis probably told MacLellan you are not allowed to tear this thing down, you give Ovechkin the best team we can muster.

I'm surprised Blake found someone to take Dubois on without having to retain or give up additional assets,
Kuemper is 34 and has 3 years left on a deal with a 5.2 million cap hit. Maybe Blake is hoping Kuemper supplies stability in goal that they have not had since he ditched Quick.
Dubois is turning 26 next week and will be going to his 4th team. He's got 7 years left on an 8+ million deal. With his track record I don't know why anyone would want him and why Washington could not extract more from LA who were clearly desparate ro get rid of him,

Goalies are hard to figure, so I am not guaranteeing that Kuemper is toast. But this season the guy played more like a league minimum journeyman goalie than a $5.25 million goalie.

Often, both are disappointed. Kuemper is the lessor of two contract weevils. If Blake and the coaching staff figure PLD is problematic in the dressing room, and is a net minus for the team, then it comes down to simple math. 3 x $5.2 vs 7 x $8. In Washington, Ovie can take PLD under his wing and both go careening through the club scene.

You can't blame the teams for wanting to make moves and getting their cap and roster set for next season. There is like 3 days between game 7 and the draft, and then Free agency is 2 days after that. (June 24th game 7, 28th-29th and July 1st). The League is to blame for not putting their foot down and keeping the schedule tight and finishing at a reasonable time.

Maybe I am using the term 'bridge' incorrectly. I basically use it to refer to a one or two year contract for a RFA. Newhook and Dach were not arbitration eligible when Montreal acquired them. Hughes saw fit (smartly I think) to give them solid four year contracts. Perhaps those are technically bridge deals because the guys were RFAs and the contracts they signed leave them short of UFA status. If I had to choose between Lundell and Newhook, I'd pick Newhook. I haven't seen enough offense from Lundell to impress me, while Newhook looked really good after he came back from that last injury, even while playing centre. The speed was there and his ppg were pretty good. And besides, he's from Newfoundland. Lundell 216 GP, 43 goals, 112 points Newhook 214 GP, 42 goals, 110 points Last season, Lundell had 35 points in 75 games, Newhook had 34 points in 55 games But Newhook hasn't shown enough? I'm with you, I choose Newhook. His uptick in production is more recent than Lundell

Dallas has had some great drafts in recent years. But Dellandrea at 13th overall in 2018 was certainly not in that category. I knew he was not producing much of anything on his ELC, yet it still surprises me that his value around the league is a fourth rounder. I guess Jimmy Nill just cleared a roster spot for Bourque or some UFA.
I know Dubois got his money and perhaps he is not an overly self-reflective individual. But man how can it not cross his mind that hey I just got traded for a cap dump. In other words, frickin eh I have negative value at 7 x $8.5

Hronek gets 8 years at $7.25 AAV from Vancouver. He seems like the guy Quinn Hughes wants to play with and he was very good for the majority of the regular season. I would be incredibly worried if this guy was a forward because a contract running through age 34 would likely careen off the cliff, but maybe for d-man and the rising cap this does not seem like a total suicide signing. Elliotte Friedman said a week ago that good Dmen were going to get paid and he was right. This is great for the Habs because if we're talking trade with some team for a top 6 forward, dangling a promising, cheap, cheap, cheap, defenseman is going to have a lot of value. Instead of $7MM, they'd be looking at $2MM for a guy who will likely progress to be as good as Hronek. Value, baby. You make a good point, seventeen. The fact that there are a decent number of quality UFA d-men going to market does not mean that all the clubs needing blue line help will want to dip into that market since the top guys are going to get considerable term and AAV. There are teams, even with the rising cap, who simply do not have much space to fill all the holes on their roster if they blow too much on a single d-man who is likely on the back nine of his career. I believe there are a handful of teams very keen on getting young, NHL tested, cap affordable help on the left side who would not really be able to/want to splash cash in free agency. In particular, Philadelphia, Nashville, Utah, and the Rangers are focused in.

This is offset, of course, by Newhook being bolstered by Anderson. 😇

Not sure about his rookie season, but Lundell played on occasion with Barkov last season and hardly ever this season. Maurice was throwing flowers at Lundell all season for what a strong two-way 3C he has been for them.
I think Lundell would cost a club more in assets to acquire him than what Montreal paid Colorado for Newhook. And the reason is a young strong two-way center is probably harder to find than good young winger who may or may not be suited to play the pivot in the NHL.
I am willing to see what happens with Dach this season. Hopefully he is healthy. Because if he can string together 1, 2, a few healthy seasons then I think the Habs will have a good 2C situation moving forward. And I like Beck (and Kapanen too) to provide homegrown solutions at 3C, so basically I would not be head over heals to acquire Lundell.

I know we are joking about Dubois, but imagine if he hadn't signed that contract with the Kings as a RFA? He wouldn't even get half that (term/length) now on the market. So in retrospect he did what was best for him last year. Give me 8.5 million per and I'll say I'm happy and always dreamed to be: "insert whatever"

Both Beck and Kapanen look very much like high quality 3C’s which is exactly where Lundell is topping out.
