Safe to say that pending UFAs Drouin, dadonov, and possibly Byron will be dealt by the deadline which clears up roster space. The caveat is that Habs will have to retain salary, AND all three will need to demonstrate to that could be helpful to a playoff hopeful. They’ll need to stay healthy and get meaningful ice time to do so.
The question is which players need to clear waivers, that we’d rather not lose?

Pezzetta will need to clear waivers and annoying energy guys who do not hurt their team while on the ice are usually in demand when they are making the league min. Poehling will have to clear waivers as well and it would seem like a shame to lose him now since he finally looked like a NHL regular most night last season.
Among the problems with carrying Drouin, Dadanov, and Byron for most of the season is when combined with the other 'priority' guys (Caufield, Slafkovsky, Anderson, Hoffman, Gallagher, and Armia) is that Montreal will have a butter soft fourth line.

I'm not all that concerned. This year will be a write-off and HuGo accepts that.
Even if Price is able to play, which is doubtful and certainly not at a high level, this team's roster is not ready to compete. The defence is weaker than last year and the youngins will get TOI, but still need a few seasons to develop. The forwards are still a pretty weak group. No team can compete with Drouin, Hoffman, and Dvo. The 3 make up $15 million of cap space and provide little in return.
The good news is this is Drouin's last year, and I couldn't care less if we get nothing for him - he is not an asset and just soaks up cap and TOI, undeservedly.
Hopefully Hoff can score over 20 goals by the trade deadline so we can dump him and his salary, or most of it. Dvo might turn it around but management is all in on Dach now, so Dvo is very expendable given his salary. Hopefully he can prove to be a solid 3C that a cup contender wants for their run next season and we get a decent return for the first round draft pick MB gave up in desperation to save face for being played on the KK fiasco.
The good news is that we will struggle again this year and will have another top draft pick. HuGo's plan is continuing to take hold and we should be competing in 2-3 years. But this year may be even worse than last year.

I'd try and keep Dauphin in the organization. His offensive upside is limited, but he's a hard worker. He's perfect as a role model for more talented kids until those kids develop a bit more.
I'm thinking that we'll get a better idea of what Hughes' vision is once Drouin, Byron and Dadonov are gone. I wish we had that cap room now though, since guys like Pitlick might be let go out of lack of roster spots and cap room, or Puljujarvi traded for at a reasonable price.

Don't want Slafs or any of the youngins learning those attributes.

I'm not ready to write off Drouin yet. He didn't have much time under MSL last year, if any. If he is controlling the issues that controlled him in the past, he may still be a very useful player. There's no denying the skill and we have gone from negative support from the previous administration to tons of support from the new one. Drouin may surprise us.

He is what he is, and it ain't very good.

The Habs provide qualifying offers to Dach, Primeau, Montembeault, Schnarr and Teasdale.
That means Rem Pitlick, Brook, and Clague all become UFAs on Wednesday unless the Habs sign them to deals beforehand. The only one I can imagine is Pitlick as he seemed to fit in well.

No Dauphin ? I'm going to assume AHL veteran limits were an issue, otherwise he's a perfect guy for AHL depth that can step in at the NHL level on occasion, and won't look foolish when in the NHL.

He is a pending UFA. I expect they sign him before Wednesday. He will come cheap so won’t be a cap issue, just a roster spot. He did enough for an extension.

The Pitlick issue in a nutshell. Losing Pitlick equates to an additional cost of the Weber trade, as bringing in Dadonov really puts us up against the wall in terms of cap and roster management for the upcoming season. I wonder what the plan is to alleviate. Regardless, it's hard to imagine where Pitlick fits in, as our center depth is solidified with Suzuki, Dach, Dvorak, Evans/Poehling.

Pitlick is a victim of Bergevin overpaying too many forwards that now the current management group literally cannot give away without retaining serious money.
I thought it would be hard to mastermind a worse summer than Bergevin had in 2017, but to be honest his handiwork in the summer of 2021 probably tops it.

Pitlick is a loss, but he's not a 3 million player.
The arbitration award is useless if the Habs don't accept so why not try the process and see if he gets a more realistic 2 million?
Unless there is a hidden reason or guaranteed award, I would of let him file for arbitration. Chances are he may have come to his senses and settle before reaching it.

Not too concerned about Pitlick. He's an OK player for a bad team. I'll be surprised if he gets anywhere close to $2 million from anyone. We don't need him taking up TOI and cap space.
But the best news of the day is no more Clague. Man he was difficult to watch.

You’d have to think that if anything can help Drouin reach his potential, it’s playing in the HuGoMart atmosphere.
Wishing him success.

Just a bit on the new arbitration rules. For player initiated, the results are binding. A team has a walk away right if the award is $4.53 million (rounded for ease) or greater, but has limited times it can do that. A team and a player that files can agree to a deal before the hearing, but once that hearing happens, the above kicks in. The rules are different for team initiated arbitration.
It is the worst case scenario that has scared Hughes and other GMs away from guys. A lot of these players will be well below the walk away threshold so the results would be binding.
Lots of extra bodies available for UFA now. Teams will have to fill out their rosters, so we will see if they actually save money via the UFA route in the end.
When it comes to Hughes rounding out his roster just prior to the season, I wonder if he will leave a spot open and see if he can scoop up a good waiver pickup that teams all try to sneak through to get their roster down to 23. The Habs get the first crack at players, so it might be a bit of a way to play, albeit not without a bit of risk.

Wishing we offered Brook a QO. I think there is still more in there. Serious injuries, lost key development time, and lack of noticeable progression when he did play likely are the big reasons. He came back this past season from the knee and only lasted a few games until he had some complications and sat out a bit more. He did finish out the season on a “conditioning stint” in 3R and was not called up for the Laval playoffs as a Black Ace. The writing was on the wall. He definitely had promise before the injuries and the depth chart on RHD sucks (and still does despite just having 11 recent draft picks, where they definitely went BPA rather than need by using a few picks on RHD).

I really don't think HuGo are that concerned with who they sign to round out the roster. They are not looking to do anything this year - in fact they'd love to have a great draft pick next year. If one needs any indication of this it will be in the FA market - I'd be stunned if HuGo signs anyone of substance. Their focus is on a few years from now. It might be different if they knew Carey was good to go as an elite tender but they would be foolish to make any moves that they think might help them make the playoffs this year given the uncertainty in net.

Glad they are gone Brook's issues, like Juulsen's were injuries. Sometimes we just can't catch a break. Additionally, that 2017 draft was actually pretty good, up until pick #50 and then it sort of fell off a cliff. Drake Batherson was picked at 121 and that's pretty well it until you hit Cayden Primeau at #199 and he has yet to prove himself. That is VERY slim pickings for late round success stories.
